How many times will the kids ask "are we there yet" on a 1 hour flight compared with a 5 hour train ride with a window seat?

Our Mombasa family holiday packages run 5 days and 4 nights from Nairobi, all inclusive. A family of four (two adults and two children aged 3 to 11) pays from KES 239,000 in total with SGR economy at Bamburi Beach Hotel. Voyager Beach Resort costs from KES 275,000. Children pay about half.

Mombasa family holiday packages work best when nobody has to think about food, money or the next taxi. So every option on this page is all inclusive. The kids can grab a juice at the pool bar without you opening your wallet every hour.

We price adults and children separately, then show the total for a family of four. That is the number most parents actually need. The plan has one easy outing per day and lots of pool time, because children decide how a beach holiday goes.

You can travel by SGR, which most children love, or fly if you are short on days. We handle the tickets, the hotel, the driver and Haller Park entry.

Highlights

  • Children aged 3 to 11 pay about half the adult price
  • All inclusive hotels with kids clubs and shallow pools
  • Half price SGR tickets for children aged 3 to 11
  • Haller Park giraffe and hippo feeding included
  • One private car for the whole family at every transfer
  • Pay in instalments over the school term

Day by day plan

  1. Day 1

    Train day to the coast

Board the 08:00 Madaraka Express at Nairobi Terminus. Children under 3 who sit on a lap travel free. The train arrives in Mombasa around 14:00, so pack snacks, a colouring book and a charged tablet. Our driver meets you at Mombasa Terminus with a car that fits your bags. You check in by 15:30, then the kids hit the pool. Dinner is buffet style, which helps fussy eaters.

  2. Day 2

    Pool morning and Haller Park

Keep the morning easy at the hotel. After lunch the driver takes you to Haller Park in Bamburi, a nature park built on an old limestone quarry. Giraffe feeding runs around 15:00 and hippo feeding around 16:00. Children can see tortoises, crocodiles and monkeys up close. The visit takes two to three hours. You are back at the hotel in time for a shower and dinner.

  3. Day 3

Glass bottom boat or kids club day

Families with older children often take a glass bottom boat into Mombasa Marine Park. Kids see starfish, sea urchins and fish without getting wet. Snorkelling is possible for confident swimmers. Families with toddlers usually stay at the hotel and use the kids club for a few hours. Both are fine. Tell us the evening before and we book it.

  4. Day 4

Fort Jesus or a lazy day

Fort Jesus is a 1590s Portuguese fort and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Children enjoy the cannons, the walls and the stories of sieges. A guided visit takes about two hours. Pair it with ice cream in Old Town. If the children are tired, skip it and spend the day in the water. The last night dinner is a good time for family photos.

  5. Day 5

    Back to Nairobi

Have breakfast and one last swim. Check out is usually at 10:00, but most hotels keep your bags and let you use the pool until you leave. The driver collects you for the 15:00 express train, which reaches Nairobi at about 20:18. Flight families leave for Moi International Airport about two hours before departure.

How much are Mombasa family holiday packages for a family of 4?

Mombasa family holiday packages for two adults and two children aged 3 to 11 cost from KES 239,000 in total for 4 nights. That is all inclusive at Bamburi Beach Hotel with SGR economy and Haller Park. Voyager Beach Resort costs from KES 275,000 by train or KES 339,000 by flight.

Children cost less because hotels and the SGR both discount them. Children aged 3 to 11 pay half fare on the Madaraka Express. Bamburi Beach Hotel charges children aged 2 to 12 sharing with parents 50 percent of the adult rate. Voyager uses a similar 50 percent rule for children aged 2 to 11.

Which hotels are best for Mombasa family holiday packages?

We like two family resorts on the North Coast for most budgets.

  • Bamburi Beach Hotel: all inclusive for residents, a children's club and a calm beach. Good value for families.
  • Voyager Beach Resort, Nyali: ship themed and built for families, with a children's safari club and beach games. Busier and livelier.
  • PrideInn convention and spa resort, Shanzu: big pools and family rooms on half board. Children aged 4 to 11 sharing pay 75 percent of the adult share.
  • Serena Beach Resort, Shanzu: quieter and greener. Its resident offer includes family rooms that need two adults and one child.

Train or flight with kids: which is easier?

The SGR is cheaper and children usually enjoy it. You can walk the aisle, there are toilets and the views of Tsavo pass by the window. The 08:00 train arrives around 14:00, which is just in time for an afternoon swim.

Flying takes about 1 hour 15 minutes. It suits families with babies or with only a long weekend. Children over 2 need their own seat, so four tickets add up fast. Our SGR guide covers luggage, security and booking tips. Flight families can use our Mombasa airport transfers.

Guest on a Kenya beach

What can kids do in Mombasa apart from the pool?

Plenty. Most of it is close to the North Coast hotels. Here are the outings families book most, with 2026 entry fees for Kenyans where we found them.

  • Haller Park: giraffe, hippo and tortoises. About KES 500 to 800 per adult and KES 200 to 400 per child, confirmed on the day
  • Mombasa Marine Park by glass bottom boat: KWS fee KES 500 per citizen adult and KES 250 per child
  • Fort Jesus: KES 550 per adult and KES 300 per child for Kenyan and East African visitors
  • Wild Waters water park in Nyali: about KES 1,700 for resident sliders
  • Mamba Village: a crocodile farm in Nyali, about KES 350 per Kenyan adult

When should we book Mombasa family holiday packages?

Book school holiday trips two to three months ahead. April, August and December fill first. Family rooms go before standard rooms. Half term breaks are cheaper and quieter.

Prices are lowest from May to June. Bamburi Beach Hotel's 2026 resident rate fell to KES 29,000 a night for a double room in that window. See family holiday packages in Kenya for other options during the same breaks.

Is Mombasa safe for a family holiday?

Yes, the main beach resorts on the North Coast are well run and used to families. Hotels have lifeguards at the pool, but not always on the beach, so watch children in the sea. Swim only where the hotel says it is safe and check the tide times at reception.

Use the hotel safe for passports and cash. Avoid buying tours from beach boys. Book through us or the hotel instead. Pack sunscreen, mosquito repellent and a basic medicine kit for children.

Can we pay for the family holiday in instalments?

Yes. Many parents start paying at the beginning of the school term. A deposit holds the rooms and train seats. The rest can come in weekly or monthly amounts by Mpesa or bank.

Read how it works on our lipa mdogo mdogo page. If you travel with grandparents or cousins, our family reunion trips cover bigger groups.

Should we add a safari to our Mombasa family holiday?

It is easy and children love it. Tsavo East is about two hours from the coast by road. A one night stop lets them see elephants, lions and buffalo before the beach.

Citizen park fees in Tsavo East are KES 1,000 per adult and KES 500 per child. Look at our Tsavo day trip from Mombasa if one night away feels like too much.

Add a round of golf to this trip

You are already at the coast. Vipingo Ridge and Nyali sit on the north coast, so a round slots into any free morning.

How to book Mombasa Family Holiday Packages

  1. Send your dates. Message us on WhatsApp with your dates, how many people are coming and the ages of any children. Tell us your budget. We plan with it, not around it.
  2. Get a written quote. We reply with a clear price per person, what it includes and what it does not. If a cheaper hotel or a shorter route makes more sense, we say so.
  3. Tweak it until it fits. Change a hotel, add a night or swap an activity. Changes cost nothing until you confirm.
  4. Confirm with a deposit. A deposit holds your rooms, seats and transport. You get a written confirmation with every detail and the date the balance is due.
  5. Travel day. Your driver meets you with a name board. You have their number and ours for the whole trip.

Pay by Mpesa, bank transfer or card on our secure checkout at book and pay. Prefer to plan face to face? Our office is at Pili Trade Centre on Mombasa Road, opposite Hilton Garden Inn and next to Argyle Grand Hotel.

Questions people ask

How much is a Mombasa holiday for a family of 4?

A 4 night all inclusive holiday for two adults and two children aged 3 to 11 costs from KES 239,000 in total. That includes SGR economy, private transfers, Bamburi Beach Hotel and Haller Park. A busier resort like Voyager starts at KES 275,000. School holidays cost more.

Do children pay full fare on the SGR?

No. Children aged 3 to 11 pay half the adult fare, so economy is KES 750 one way. Children under 3 travel free if they sit on a parent's lap. Children aged 12 and over pay the full adult fare. You may be asked for a birth certificate.

Which Mombasa hotel has the best kids club?

Voyager Beach Resort in Nyali is the best known for families, with a children's safari club, beach games and themed activities. Bamburi Beach Hotel also runs a children's club and is calmer. Ask us which suits your children's ages.

Do babies pay at Mombasa hotels?

Most beach hotels let babies under 2 stay free in a cot in your room. Voyager lists children up to 1.99 years as free. The PrideInn resort on Shanzu Beach provides free cots for babies up to 3. Tell us the ages when you book so we request a cot.

What age is a child at Mombasa beach hotels?

Usually 2 to 11 or 2 to 12 years, depending on the hotel. Teenagers 12 and over often pay 70 to 75 percent of the adult rate or a full adult share. We check each hotel's child policy and show the exact figure in your quote.

Is Mombasa better than Diani for families?

Mombasa North Coast is closer to the SGR and airport and has more child outings like Haller Park and Wild Waters. Diani has a wider, calmer beach and suits families who mostly want sand and pool time. Both work well for children.

Sources we checked: Madaraka Express fares and child policy (paybillke, Sep 2026); Bamburi Beach Hotel 2026 rates and child policy; Voyager Beach Resort 2026 rates and child policy; PrideInn Paradise 2026 rates and child policy; Fort Jesus fees from May 2026 (Khusoko); KWS conservation fees from October 2025. Rules and fees change, so we confirm them again when you book.
