Diani or Zanzibar
Diani is easier and cheaper to reach from Nairobi. Flights are under an hour, there is no visa, and the reef is close in. Wasini and Kisite Marine Park give you dolphins and some of the best snorkelling on the Kenyan coast.
Zanzibar costs more and gives you Stone Town, the spice farms and a different culture entirely. It pairs best with a northern circuit safari in Tanzania rather than a Kenyan one.
If you have four days, choose Diani. If you have a week and you are already in Tanzania, choose Zanzibar.
When to go
The coast is good most of the year. Avoid the long rains in April and May when many beach hotels close. December and January are hot, busy and expensive. June to October is dry, breezy and our pick.
