The team behind your trip

A 2 day Masai Mara safari is the quickest way to trade your desk for the plains. You leave Nairobi after breakfast, reach the reserve by lunchtime and you are watching lions before the sun goes down. It is built for people with one weekend and a long list of animals to see.

  • StartsNairobi
  • Best forWeekend breaks, first timers, short leave

Rated 5.0 on Google from 46 reviews. Price confirmed in writing before you pay.

This 2 day Masai Mara safari runs most days of the year in a private pop up roof Land Cruiser with your own driver guide, or as a shared seat on a group joining van if you want to keep costs down. Either way you get two proper game drives, not one rushed loop.

Below you will find the real drive time from Nairobi, a full price table by group size and season, what the park fee actually buys you and honest advice on whether two days is enough or whether you should stretch to a 3 day Masai Mara group joining safari.

Highlights

  • Two full game drives inside the Masai Mara, morning and afternoon
  • 5 to 6 hour drive from Nairobi through the Great Rift Valley
  • One night at a camp or lodge on full board, dinner included
  • Private 4×4 with a pop up roof, or a shared group joining seat
  • Park fees for the reserve included and itemised in your quote
  • Good odds on lion, elephant, buffalo, giraffe and often leopard

Day by day plan

  1. Day 1

    Nairobi to the Masai Mara

Your driver guide picks you up from your Nairobi hotel or JKIA at about 6.30 am. You head west through Narok town, watching the land drop into the Great Rift Valley along the way. The tarmac gives way to a graded road for the last stretch and you reach the reserve gate by late morning. After a quick lunch at camp you head straight into an afternoon game drive, chasing the last good light for lions, elephants and, if you are lucky, a cheetah on a termite mound. Dinner and the night are at your chosen camp, inside or just outside the reserve boundary.

  2. Day 2

Full Morning Game Drive and Return to Nairobi

You wake early for a full morning game drive, when predators are most active and the light is best for photos. Breakfast is back at camp around 9 am, followed by checkout. Depending on your pickup time, your guide may run one more short game drive on the way out of the reserve before the road trip back to Nairobi. You arrive home by early evening, tired, a little dusty and usually already planning your next trip.

Is a 2 Day Masai Mara Safari Enough?

Two days is enough to see the Masai Mara properly, just not all of it. You get two full game drives, which is usually enough time to find lion, elephant, buffalo and giraffe and a fair shot at leopard or cheetah if your guide reads the radio chatter well.

What you miss is depth. A 2 day Masai Mara safari does not leave room for a slow afternoon watching one pride, a sunrise game drive followed by a bush breakfast, or a second habitat such as the Mara Triangle. If your budget and leave days allow it, see our 4 day Masai Mara safari instead.

How Much Does a 2 Day Masai Mara Safari Cost in 2026?

A 2 day Masai Mara safari starts from about USD 445 per person on a shared group joining van in low season and from USD 610 per person for a private vehicle for two people in a budget camp.

The price moves with three things: your group size, your camp tier and the season. Larger groups split the vehicle and guide cost further, so 6 people pay noticeably less per head than 2 people. See our full safari cost and prices guide for how these tiers compare across every trip we run and treat every figure here as a guide price per person sharing, confirmed in writing on WhatsApp before you pay anything.

The Drive from Nairobi to the Masai Mara

The road distance from Nairobi to the Masai Mara is about 270 kilometres and the drive takes 5 to 6 hours including a stop at the Rift Valley viewpoint and a toilet and coffee break in Narok town.

The route is tarmac to Narok, then a graded murram road for the final 90 minutes into the reserve. It is bumpy in places but well used by safari vehicles every day and your driver guide will know which stretches to slow down for. Read our full Nairobi to Masai Mara by road vs flight guide if you are weighing up the two options.

2 day Masai Mara safari: what you will see

What a 2 Day Masai Mara Safari Includes

Every quote from us spells out exactly what is covered, so there are no surprises at the gate. The core inclusions are your vehicle, guide, park fee and one night of full board accommodation, listed in full above. Not sure which vehicle suits you? Our Land Cruiser vs safari van comparison breaks down the difference.

  • A driver guide who knows the reserve tracks and radios other guides for sightings
  • A 4×4 with a pop up roof so everyone gets a clear view and photos
  • Full board meals at camp, from dinner on arrival to breakfast on day two
  • Bottled water in the vehicle for both game drives

Park Fees and the 12 Hour Ticket Rule

The Masai Mara charges a 12 hour ticket, valid from 6 am to 6 pm or 6 pm to 6 am. On a 2 day Masai Mara safari you normally need one ticket for day one and, if you stay past 6 am on day two, a second ticket for the morning drive.

Current non resident rates are about USD 100 per person per ticket from Jan to Jun, rising to about USD 200 Jul to Dec, with a lower child rate for ages 9 to 17. See our Masai Mara entry fees guide and the wider Kenya park entry fees guide for every other park. Always confirm current fees at booking, since county rates are reviewed from time to time.

Private Vehicle or Group Joining Van?

A private 4×4 means your own vehicle, your own pace and a driver guide focused only on your group. It costs more per person but you choose your wake up time and how long to linger at a sighting.

A group joining van pools you with other travelers on a fixed departure, which brings the price of a 2 day Masai Mara safari down to its lowest point. See our Kenya group joining safaris page for other fixed departures, or our Kenya private safaris page if you would rather keep the vehicle to yourselves.

Best Time for a Short Masai Mara Trip

The Masai Mara delivers good game viewing all year, since resident lion, elephant and buffalo populations do not migrate. Jan to Jun is quieter and cheaper, with lower park fees and fewer vehicles at sightings.

Jul to Oct is when the wildebeest migration crosses the Mara River, which is spectacular but also the busiest and most expensive time to book a 2 day Masai Mara safari. Check our great migration calendar and best time to visit the Masai Mara guide before you pick your dates. If you want the migration on a short trip, book your camp early.

What to Pack for a Short Masai Mara Weekend

You only need one change of clothes plus what you travel in, so pack light. Neutral colours work best for photos and for staying comfortable in the vehicle. Our full what to pack for a Kenya safari checklist covers longer trips too.

  • A warm layer for early morning game drives, mornings get cold
  • Sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses for the open roof
  • A basic pair of binoculars if you own them
  • Cash in small notes for tips, plus your ID or passport

Who a 2 Day Masai Mara Safari Suits

A 2 day Masai Mara safari suits anyone working with a short weekend, a first time visitor who wants to test safari life before committing to a longer trip and Nairobi based expats topping up their annual leave.

It is also a sensible add on if you are already flying through Nairobi on a longer Africa trip and want two solid days of game viewing without reworking your whole schedule. Families with young children may prefer our Kenya family safaris page instead, since two days means more driving per day of wildlife.

Booking Your 2 Day Masai Mara Safari

Send us your travel dates and group size on WhatsApp and we will reply with a private quote and a shared seat option where one is running. Every price is confirmed in writing before you pay a deposit and we itemise the park fee separately so you know exactly what you are covering.

Camps fill up fast in peak season, so a 2 day Masai Mara safari booked 2 to 4 weeks ahead usually has more camp choices than a last minute one. We can also help with hotel booking in Kenya before or after your trip. Low season trips can often be arranged within a few days.

How to book your 2 day Masai Mara safari

Booking your 2 day Masai Mara safari with us takes about five minutes of your time. The rest is our job. Here is exactly what happens, step by step, so there are no surprises along the way.

  1. Send your dates. Message us on WhatsApp with your travel dates, how many people are coming and the ages of any children. Tell us if you have a budget in mind. We plan with it, not around it.
  2. Get a written quote. We reply with a clear price per person, what it includes and what it does not. No hidden park fees and no vague extras. If a cheaper camp or a shorter route makes more sense, we say so.
  3. Tweak it until it fits. Change a camp, add a night or swap a park. Ask as many questions as you like. Changes cost nothing until you confirm.
  4. Confirm with a deposit. A deposit holds your vehicle, guide and rooms. You get a written confirmation with every detail and the date the balance is due.
  5. Travel day. Your driver guide meets you at your hotel or the airport with a name board. You have their number and ours for the whole trip.

What every trip with us includes

Every 2 day Masai Mara safari plan we put together comes with the basics done properly. You ride in a safari vehicle with a pop up roof, with a professional driver guide who knows the parks. Water is in the cooler box and park fees are sorted in advance so you do not stand in a queue at the gate.

We also stay reachable. If something changes on the road, a flat tyre, a closed route or a sudden storm, we sort it and keep you posted on WhatsApp.

Paying safely

We share payment details in writing only and every payment gets a receipt. The payment options and the balance date sit on your written quote, so nothing is left to memory or a phone call.

Why book with a Nairobi team

We live here. We drive these roads all year, we know which camps are honest about their photos and we know when a park is too busy to enjoy. That local knowledge is what turns a good 2 day Masai Mara safari into a great one. Our Google rating sits at 5.0 from 46 reviews and we plan to keep it that way.

Ready when you are. Send us a message and we will put a plan together for you shortly.

Questions people ask

Is 2 days enough for a Masai Mara safari?

Yes, a 2 day Masai Mara safari gives you two full game drives, which is usually enough for lion, elephant, buffalo and giraffe, plus a good chance at leopard or cheetah. It will feel rushed if you also want a bush breakfast or a second habitat, so treat 2 days as the minimum, not the ideal.

How much does a 2 day Masai Mara safari cost in 2026?

Prices start from about USD 445 per person on a shared group joining van in low season and from USD 610 per person for a private vehicle for two people in a budget camp. Mid range and luxury camps run higher. See the price table above for the full breakdown by group size.

How long is the drive from Nairobi to the Masai Mara?

The drive covers about 270 kilometres and takes 5 to 6 hours by road, including a short stop at the Rift Valley viewpoint and a break in Narok town. Flying instead takes about 45 minutes but costs more, which is why most 2 day trips go by road.

How many Mara park tickets do I need on a 2 day trip, the 12 hour rule?

The reserve sells 12 hour tickets, so a 2 day Masai Mara safari usually needs one ticket for the first afternoon and a second if you drive again after 6 am on day two. Your quote itemises exactly how many tickets you are paying for.

Can I do a 2 day Masai Mara safari in a shared group van?

Yes. A shared group joining van is the cheapest way to do a 2 day Masai Mara safari, since the vehicle, guide and fuel cost split across more travelers. It runs on fixed departure dates and suits solo travelers and couples on a budget.

What animals will I see on a 2 day Masai Mara safari?

The Masai Mara holds resident lion, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and hippo all year, so a 2 day Masai Mara safari gives good odds on most of the Big Five. Leopard and cheetah are possible but never guaranteed, since they depend on that week’s sightings.

Should I book 2 days or 3 days in the Masai Mara?

Book 2 days if your leave or budget is tight and you mainly want a taste of the reserve. Book 3 days if you want a slower pace, a second habitat like the Mara Triangle, or better odds on leopard. Both options are private or group joining.
