When to go
July to October is the wildebeest migration and the river crossings. It is the most dramatic time and the most expensive. Camps fill up by March, so book early.
January to March is dry, the grass is short and game viewing is excellent without the crowds. This is the quiet value season and our favourite for photography.
April, May and November are the rains. Some camps close. The Mara is green and almost empty, and prices drop hard. If you do not mind a wet afternoon this is the best value in the year.
What a Mara safari really costs
Park entry alone is USD 100 per adult per day at the time of writing, set by the Narok County Government. Anyone quoting you a three day Mara safari for USD 300 has either cut the park days or is putting you in a camp outside the reserve. Ask which.
A budget safari puts you in a tented camp outside the gate. A mid range safari puts you inside or on the edge of the reserve. A luxury safari puts you in a conservancy where vehicle numbers are limited and you can go off road. The animals are the same. The experience is not.
How many days
Three days gives you one full day of game drives. It works if the Mara is all you want. Five days gives you two full days plus the migration window, which is what most people actually come for. Eight days lets you add Nakuru, Amboseli and Tsavo so you see flamingos, elephants against Kilimanjaro and red elephants in one trip.
Common questions
Is the Maasai Mara safe? Yes. You are with a driver guide at all times and the camps are secure. The usual rule applies, stay in the vehicle on game drives.
Can you tailor the trip? Yes. Tell us your dates, your budget and how many people and we will build it around that. Most of our bookings are tailored rather than off the shelf.
How do I pay? Talk to us first. We confirm availability, then send an invoice with a deposit and a balance date.
