Mombasa school trip packages have to pass two tests. Parents want a safe trip at a fair price. The school wants real learning that links to the curriculum. We built this plan around both.

The biggest change is the timetable. Government rules say school buses must not travel between 6pm and 6am. A road trip from Nairobi to Mombasa is long. The evening SGR reaches Nairobi after dark. So our plan uses the 08:00 train both ways. Learners arrive in Mombasa at about 14:00 and back in Nairobi at about 14:10, with time to reach school or home before dark.

Every price is per learner and includes the train, rooms, meals, local coach, a guide and the entry fees for the main sites.

Highlights

  • All travel in daylight on the 08:00 SGR both ways
  • Fort Jesus and Old Town for history and heritage
  • Haller Park for ecology and land restoration
  • Glass bottom boat in Mombasa Marine Park for marine science
  • Half price SGR fares for pupils aged 3 to 11
  • Per learner pricing with teacher places shown separately

Day by day plan

  1. Day 1

    Nairobi to Mombasa by SGR

Learners report to Nairobi Terminus by 06:45 for security checks. The 08:00 Madaraka Express stops at stations along the way, which makes a good geography lesson on land use and climate. The train reaches Mombasa Terminus around 14:00. Our coach takes the group to the hotel on the North Coast. After check in and supper, teachers hold a briefing and roll call. Lights out early.

  2. Day 2

Fort Jesus, Old Town and Haller Park

After breakfast the coach takes the group to Fort Jesus, built by the Portuguese in the 1590s and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A guide explains the fort, the museum and the struggle for control of the coast. Learners then walk through Old Town to see Swahili architecture and carved doors. After a packed lunch, the group visits Haller Park for giraffe feeding around 15:00 and hippo feeding around 16:00.

  3. Day 3

    Marine park and coastal culture

Start early to catch the right tide. Learners board glass bottom boats into Mombasa Marine Park to see coral, sea grass, starfish and fish. Teachers can link this to ecosystems and conservation. After lunch, visit Bombolulu Cultural Centre to learn about coastal communities and crafts, or hold a beach clean up and a short reflection session. Supper and a quiz night end the day.

  4. Day 4

    Mombasa to Nairobi by SGR

Breakfast is at 06:00. The coach leaves for Mombasa Terminus by 06:30 for the 08:00 train. Learners can complete worksheets on the journey. The train reaches Nairobi around 14:10. School buses have time to drop everyone before 18:00. Parents get a WhatsApp update from the lead teacher as the train arrives.

How much do Mombasa school trip packages cost per student?

Mombasa school trip packages cost from KES 26,500 per primary pupil and KES 29,000 per secondary student for 4 days and 3 nights. Teachers cost from KES 37,000 in twin rooms. Prices are for groups of 40 or more and include SGR, rooms, all meals, a coach, a guide and the main entry fees.

Primary pupils cost less because the SGR charges half fare for children aged 3 to 11. Several sites also charge lower child rates. Secondary students aged 12 and over pay the adult SGR fare.

Why do our Mombasa school trip packages use the SGR?

Because it is the safest way to keep all travel in daylight. The Ministry of Education and the Interior Ministry have repeatedly told schools that school buses must not travel between 6pm and 6am. A road trip to Mombasa is long. Many buses arrive or return at night.

The 08:00 train arrives in Mombasa at about 14:00 and the 08:00 return reaches Nairobi at about 14:10. That leaves time for school buses to reach the school or drop points before dark. Read our SGR guide for luggage and security rules.

What do learners study on the trip?

Each stop links to classroom topics, so the trip is not just a holiday.

  • Fort Jesus and Old Town: coastal history, the Portuguese and Omani periods, trade and Swahili culture
  • Haller Park: how a cement quarry was turned into a forest and wildlife park
  • Mombasa Marine Park: coral reefs, marine life and conservation
  • The SGR journey: geography, land use and transport engineering
  • Bombolulu or a beach clean up: communities, crafts and caring for the environment
Guest on a Kenya beach

What are the 2026 entry fees for school groups?

These are the published rates for Kenyan and East African learners. We include them in the package price.

  • Fort Jesus: KES 550 per adult and KES 300 per child from 7 May 2026
  • Mombasa Marine Park (KWS): KES 500 per citizen adult and KES 250 per child or student
  • Haller Park: about KES 500 to 800 per adult and KES 200 to 400 per child, confirmed on the day
  • SGR economy: KES 1,500 per adult or student aged 12 and over, KES 750 for children aged 3 to 11

How do we keep learners safe in Mombasa?

We plan safety into every step. The group travels together on one train and one coach. Rooms are grouped by gender and floor, with teachers nearby. Our coordinator stays with the group during all visits.

Swimming happens only in the hotel pool under teacher supervision, never in the open sea. We share a full daily programme, emergency contacts and hospital details with the school before departure. We also recommend group travel insurance. See our travel insurance page.

When should we book Mombasa school trip packages?

Book at least two to three months ahead. That gives time for parent consent forms, fee collection and school approvals. It also lets us book SGR seats as a block and hold enough rooms.

Mid term dates outside public school holidays are cheapest and quietest. Avoid the August and December holidays, when the train and hotels are full of families.

How do schools and parents pay?

We send the school a formal quote with a per learner price and a list of what is included. Parents can then pay the school, or pay us directly in instalments by Mpesa with each learner's name as the reference.

A deposit confirms the train seats and rooms. The balance is due before we issue the tickets. Our lipa mdogo mdogo page explains instalments.

Can we add a safari to the school trip?

Yes. Tsavo East is the closest national park to Mombasa. A day visit fits between the coast and the return train, but it needs an extra night to keep travel in daylight. Citizen park fees are KES 1,000 per adult and KES 500 per child.

See our Kenya school trip safari and educational safari plans for longer tours. Universities and colleges can look at our student safari tours.

Add a round of golf to this trip

How to book Mombasa School Trip Packages

  1. Send your dates. Message us on WhatsApp with your dates, how many people are coming and the ages of any children. Tell us your budget. We plan with it, not around it.
  2. Get a written quote. We reply with a clear price per person, what it includes and what it does not. If a cheaper hotel or a shorter route makes more sense, we say so.
  3. Tweak it until it fits. Change a hotel, add a night or swap an activity. Changes cost nothing until you confirm.
  4. Confirm with a deposit. A deposit holds your rooms, seats and transport. You get a written confirmation with every detail and the date the balance is due.
  5. Travel day. Your driver meets you with a name board. You have their number and ours for the whole trip.

Pay by Mpesa, bank transfer or card on our secure checkout at book and pay. Prefer to plan face to face? Our office is at Pili Trade Centre on Mombasa Road, opposite Hilton Garden Inn and next to Argyle Grand Hotel.

Questions people ask

How much is a school trip to Mombasa per student?

Our 4 day trip costs from KES 26,500 per primary pupil and KES 29,000 per secondary student for groups of 40 or more. It includes SGR both ways, three nights with meals, a coach, a guide and entry to Fort Jesus, Haller Park and Mombasa Marine Park.

Can school buses travel to Mombasa at night?

No. Government guidelines bar school buses from travelling between 6pm and 6am. Officials have ordered crackdowns on schools that break the rule. That is why our plan uses the 08:00 SGR both ways, so all travel happens in daylight.

Do students pay half fare on the SGR?

Children aged 3 to 11 pay half the adult fare, which is KES 750 in economy. Students aged 12 and over pay the full KES 1,500 each way. Learners should carry a birth certificate copy or school ID, as staff may ask for proof of age.

How many teachers should go on a Mombasa school trip?

Follow your school and Ministry of Education guidance. Many schools send at least one teacher for every 10 to 15 learners, plus both male and female staff for mixed groups. We price teacher places separately so the school can plan.

What should students pack for a Mombasa trip?

Light school uniform or tracksuit, a hat, sunscreen, a water bottle, sandals, a swimsuit for the pool, a notebook and any medicine with a note. Avoid valuables. Pack everything in one soft bag that is easy to carry through SGR security.

Can a school go to Mombasa for one day?

Not from Nairobi. The train takes about six hours each way, so a day trip would mean travelling at night. Schools at the coast can do day visits to Fort Jesus, Haller Park and the marine park. Ask us for a day programme if your school is in Mombasa, Kilifi or Kwale.

Sources we checked: No school travel after 6pm (Capital FM); Education PS orders crackdown on 6am to 6pm rule (Kenyans.co.ke); Madaraka Express fares and child fares (paybillke); Madaraka Express timetable (Seat61); National Museums of Kenya fees from May 2026 (Khusoko); KWS conservation fees from October 2025. Rules and fees change, so we confirm them again when you book.

Ready when you are. Send your dates and group size. We reply with a clear price and a plan you can change.
