Cheap Mombasa holiday packages are possible without a bad hotel or a dangerous bus at night. The trick is simple. Use the SGR, stay on bed and breakfast at a clean beach hotel and travel as a group. You keep the beach and drop the extras you do not need.

Day by day plan
- Day 1
Train day to Bamburi
Take the 08:00 Madaraka Express from Nairobi Terminus in economy. Bring water and snacks to avoid buying on board. You arrive at Mombasa Terminus around 14:00. Our driver takes you to Kahama Hotel on Bamburi Beach. Check in, change and go straight to the sand. For dinner, eat at a local Swahili cafe nearby rather than the hotel to keep costs low.

Free beach day
Breakfast is included. Spend the morning on Bamburi Beach. Swimming, walking and sunsets are free. In the afternoon, take a matatu or tuk tuk into town for the Old Town walk and Fort Jesus, which costs KES 550 per Kenyan adult. Walk along Mama Ngina Drive in the evening and try the street food by the ocean.

Last swim and home
Have breakfast and a last swim. Check out at 10:00 and leave your bags at reception. Our driver collects you at about 13:00 for the 15:00 express train. It reaches Nairobi around 20:18. Total spend for most people is the package price plus KES 3,000 to 6,000 for food and one outing.

How much do cheap Mombasa holiday packages cost?
Prices start at about KES 15,000 per person for 2 nights when four friends travel together. Two people sharing pay from KES 17,000 each. Both include return SGR economy, private transfers and bed and breakfast at Kahama Hotel on Bamburi Beach.
Below that, you start cutting things that matter, like a safe transfer or a room on the beach. We do not sell trips that rely on night buses or rooms far from the sea.
What makes these cheap Mombasa holiday packages cheap?
Four choices keep the price down without spoiling the trip.

What will I spend on top of the package?
Plan for food, local transport and one outing. These are the figures we found for 2026.
- Fort Jesus: KES 550 per Kenyan or East African adult, KES 300 per child
- Mombasa Marine Park entry: KES 500 per citizen adult, boat extra
- Haller Park: about KES 500 to 800 per adult, confirmed on the day
- Lunch and dinner at local Swahili cafes: much cheaper than hotel restaurants
- Tuk tuk or matatu into town: agree the fare before you board
When are cheap Mombasa holiday packages cheapest?
May and June are the cheapest months. Hotels cut prices after Easter during the long rains. Bamburi Beach Hotel's resident all inclusive rate falls to KES 29,000 a night per double room in that window, from KES 34,000 in July and August.
September to November is the next best. Avoid Easter, the August school holidays and 20 December to 3 January if price matters most. Mid month trips are also easier to book than end month trips, when salaries land.
Can the night train save me a hotel night?
In theory, yes. The 22:00 train from Nairobi reaches Mombasa around 03:35. The 22:00 train back arrives in Nairobi at about the same time. In practice it rarely saves money.
Hotels do not let you into a room at 04:00 without charging for the night before or a large early check in fee. You also lose half a day to tiredness. We suggest the 08:00 train down and the 15:00 express back. It is the cheapest plan that still feels like a holiday.
The one case where the night train helps is the return trip on a Sunday. Spend the whole day on the beach, take a late dinner and sleep on the train. Just plan how you will get home from Nairobi Terminus before dawn.
Can we pay in instalments?
Yes. Pay a deposit to lock in the train and hotel, then send the rest in small amounts by Mpesa or bank. It works well for a trip planned two or three months ahead.

Are cheap trips good for chamas and groups of friends?
Very. Groups save on transfers and get more attention from hotels. A chama of 10 or more can sometimes get a small group rate on rooms, which we pass on.

What free or nearly free things can I do in Mombasa?
A lot of Mombasa costs nothing. Walk Bamburi or Nyali beach at sunrise. Walk the narrow streets of Old Town and look at the carved Swahili doors. Watch ships enter the harbour from Mama Ngina Drive.

Is a cheap Mombasa trip safe?
Yes, if you use the SGR, a known hotel and planned transfers. That is what we book. Avoid buying tours or rides from beach boys. Keep your phone and cash in the hotel safe when you swim.

How to book Cheap Mombasa Holiday Packages Under KES 20,000
- Send your dates. Message us on WhatsApp with your dates, how many people are coming and the ages of any children. Tell us your budget. We plan with it, not around it.
- Get a written quote. We reply with a clear price per person, what it includes and what it does not. If a cheaper hotel or a shorter route makes more sense, we say so.
- Tweak it until it fits. Change a hotel, add a night or swap an activity. Changes cost nothing until you confirm.
- Confirm with a deposit. A deposit holds your rooms, seats and transport. You get a written confirmation with every detail and the date the balance is due.
- Travel day. Your driver meets you with a name board. You have their number and ours for the whole trip.

What is the cheapest way to go to Mombasa from Nairobi?
The SGR in economy at KES 1,500 each way is the cheapest safe option. Children aged 3 to 11 pay half. Buses can cost less, but they take longer and many run at night. Book SGR tickets early because cheap seats sell out on weekends.
Can I get a Mombasa package under KES 20,000?

Can students get cheaper Mombasa trips?
