You travel from Nairobi in a private pop up roof 4×4 with a driver guide, spend two nights in or beside the park and enjoy a full day on the plains. Amboseli is flat, open and easy to read, so sightings come quickly.

Below you find the day by day plan, price tiers, park fees, the best months for clear mountain views and the choices that make a 3 day Amboseli safari work well.

Highlights

  • Elephant herds up close, some with large tusks
  • Kilimanjaro views at sunrise and sunset on clear days
  • A full day of game drives across swamps and open plains
  • A 4 to 5 hour drive from Nairobi on mostly good roads
  • Budget camp, mid range lodge or luxury lodge
  • Private 4×4 with a pop up roof for photographs

Day by day plan

  1. Day 1

    Nairobi to Amboseli

You leave Nairobi at about 7 am and drive 4 to 5 hours to Amboseli, with a stop at Namanga or Emali for coffee. You reach camp for lunch and settle in. At about 4 pm you head out on a game drive. Elephants walk to the swamps in late light and the mountain often appears at sunset. Dinner is at camp and your guide briefs you on the plan for the next morning.

  2. Day 2

    Full day in Amboseli

You rise before dawn and drive out for the clearest views of Kilimanjaro. The morning covers the swamps, where elephants, buffalo, hippo and flamingos feed. After lunch, you visit Observation Hill for a view across the park. A late drive takes you through the plains for zebra, wildebeest, giraffe and possibly cheetah or lion. You return to camp at dusk for dinner and a chance to compare photographs.

  3. Day 3

    Amboseli to Nairobi

A last game drive at dawn gives you one more look at the elephants and a final mountain photograph. After breakfast you check out and drive back to Nairobi, about 4 to 5 hours. You arrive in the early afternoon, in time for an evening flight or an easy dinner in the city. We drop you at your hotel or the airport. If you want to extend, ask us about adding a night in Nairobi or a stop at the Maasai market on the way back.

What a 3 Day Amboseli Safari Offers

Amboseli is small, about 392 square kilometres and that is its strength. You can cover most of the park in a day, so you spend your time watching animals instead of driving to them.

The park is known for its elephants, studied by researchers for decades. Big herds move between the swamps and the dry plains every day. For a broader view, compare our 2 day Amboseli safari with this plan.

Most first time visitors are surprised by how close the elephants come. Vehicles often stop while a herd crosses the track and your guide switches off the engine so you can hear the rumbles and the crunch of grass.

How Much Does a 3 Day Amboseli Safari Cost?

Prices start at USD 850 per person for six people sharing a budget camp in low season. Two people in mid range pay about USD 1,350 each and two people in luxury pay about USD 1,620.

The price includes your vehicle, guide, two nights on full board and the park fees. For more detail on each part of the budget, read our safari cost and prices page.

Budget camps use a shared vehicle cost across six people, so each person pays less. Two travellers pay more because the vehicle, fuel and driver guide are split two ways. Travelling with friends or family is the simplest way to bring the price down on a 3 day Amboseli safari.

Park Fees and What Is Included

Amboseli is run by KWS and the conservation fee for non resident adults is about USD 90 per day from Oct 2025. Children 9 to 17 pay about half and under 9s are free. Fees are charged per 24 hour period.

All fees are already in our price. See the Kenya national park entry fees guide for the full list of parks and the rules for residents and citizens.

Camps often charge a separate community or conservancy fee when they sit outside the park. We list it in your quote so you never meet a surprise at check in.

3 day Amboseli safari: what you will see

Seeing Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro stands just across the Tanzanian border and Amboseli has the best view from Kenya. The mountain is clear most mornings from Jun to Oct and Jan to Mar. It often hides behind cloud by mid morning.

For the best photographs, go out at sunrise and again at sunset. If cloud covers the peak, your guide keeps you on the move for elephant scenes instead. Over two nights you almost always get at least one good view.

Kilimanjaro is 5,895 metres high, the tallest free standing mountain in the world. It looks much taller from Amboseli than it does in photographs, because the plains below are so flat. A 3 day Amboseli safari is the easiest way to see it without climbing it. If you want to climb, see our Kilimanjaro climbing cost page.

Best Time for a 3 Day Amboseli Safari

Jun to Oct is dry, with dusty roads and animals clustered at the swamps. Jan to Mar is dry and hot with excellent light. Nov and Dec bring short rains and green plains.

Apr and May are wet and quiet, with the lowest rates but cloudier skies. Read our Kenya safari month by month guide for temperatures and rainfall.

Dry months show the animals more clearly, because they cluster near water. Wet months turn the park green, with fewer vehicles and calves everywhere. Tell us what matters to you and we suggest the month that suits a 3 day Amboseli safari best.

Wildlife You Can Expect on a 3 Day Amboseli Safari

Elephants lead the list, with herds of 20 to 60 common. Big tuskers also walk here and you may see old bulls with tusks that nearly touch the ground. Buffalo, hippo and wildebeest gather at the swamps. Giraffe, zebra and gazelles graze the plains.

Birdlife is rich, with pelicans, crowned cranes, African fish eagles and many raptors. Lions appear now and then and cheetahs hunt on open ground, especially in the dry months. Our Kenya safari animals guide lists what lives where.

Where You Stay

Budget tiers use simple tented camps with shared or private bathrooms and hot meals. Mid range lodges have a pool, a bar and large rooms. Luxury lodges sit beside the swamps with private decks and Kilimanjaro views.

Camps inside the park save you the gate queue. Camps outside the gate, near Kimana or Namanga road, cost less but add 20 to 40 minutes each way. We tell you which gate each camp uses.

Meals are usually a hot breakfast, a packed or hot lunch and a three course dinner. Tell us about vegetarian, halal or allergy needs when you book and we pass them to the camp.

Road or Flight and Extending Your Trip

The drive from Nairobi takes 4 to 5 hours. The route via Emali and Loitokitok has improved a lot and the Namanga road is also an option. Most travellers choose the road, since it is cheap and scenic.

If you are short of time, you can fly from Wilson Airport to Amboseli in about 45 minutes. See our Kenya fly in safaris for rates. For day travellers, read the Amboseli day trip page.

If three days feels short, add Tsavo West on the way to or from the coast. Our 4 day Amboseli and Tsavo West safari is a popular upgrade.

You can also pair Amboseli with the Mara. See the 5 day Maasai Mara and Amboseli safari for the combined plan. Our standard Amboseli National Park safari itinerary follows the same route as this page.

Amboseli is dusty and warm during the day and cool at dawn. Bring layers, a buff or scarf for dust, a hat and sunglasses.

  • A zoom lens or binoculars for elephants
  • Sunscreen and lip balm, since the sun is strong
  • A camera cover for dust, plus lens wipes
  • Closed shoes and a light rain jacket for Nov to May

Photography and Culture

The light in Amboseli is soft at dawn and dusk and the flat plains give clear lines of sight. A pop up roof lets you shoot from a stable position. Bring a long lens, a spare battery and a bean bag.

Many camps sit near Maasai land and a village visit is an easy add on. Expect to pay about USD 20 to 30 per person. See our Maasai village day tour for how we run visits respectfully.

Book Your 3 Day Amboseli Safari

Send your dates, group size and tier on WhatsApp at +254 720 731957. We reply with a written quote and camp shortlist, usually within a few hours.

Peak season camps fill early, so book Jul to Oct trips three to four months ahead. Low season trips often work with two weeks of notice.

Tell us if you travel with children, if you use a wheelchair or if you need a late checkout. We shape a 3 day Amboseli safari around the people on it, not the other way round.

How to book your 3 day Amboseli safari

Booking your 3 day Amboseli safari with us takes about five minutes of your time. The rest is our job. Here is exactly what happens, step by step, so there are no surprises along the way.

  1. Send your dates. Message us on WhatsApp with your travel dates, how many people are coming and the ages of any children. Tell us if you have a budget in mind. We plan with it, not around it.
  2. Get a written quote. We reply with a clear price per person, what it includes and what it does not. No hidden park fees and no vague extras. If a cheaper camp or a shorter route makes more sense, we say so.
  3. Tweak it until it fits. Change a camp, add a night or swap a park. Ask as many questions as you like. Changes cost nothing until you confirm.
  4. Confirm with a deposit. A deposit holds your vehicle, guide and rooms. You get a written confirmation with every detail and the date the balance is due.
  5. Travel day. Your driver guide meets you at your hotel or the airport with a name board. You have their number and ours for the whole trip.

What every trip with us includes

Every 3 day Amboseli safari plan we put together comes with the basics done properly. You ride in a safari vehicle with a pop up roof, with a professional driver guide who knows the parks. Water is in the cooler box and park fees are sorted in advance so you do not stand in a queue at the gate.

We also stay reachable. If something changes on the road, a flat tyre, a closed route or a sudden storm, we sort it and keep you posted on WhatsApp.

Paying safely

We share payment details in writing only and every payment gets a receipt. The payment options and the balance date sit on your written quote, so nothing is left to memory or a phone call.

Why book with a Nairobi team

We live here. We drive these roads all year, we know which camps are honest about their photos and we know when a park is too busy to enjoy. That local knowledge is what turns a good 3 day Amboseli safari into a great one. Our Google rating sits at 5.0 from 46 reviews and we plan to keep it that way.

Ready when you are. Send us a message and we will put a plan together for you shortly.

Questions people ask

How much is a 3 day Amboseli safari?

Our guide prices start at USD 850 per person for six people in a budget camp in low season. Mid range runs about USD 1,080 to 1,350 and luxury about USD 1,300 to 1,620. Park fees are included.

Can I see Kilimanjaro on a 3 day Amboseli safari?

Often, yes. Clear mornings are common from Jun to Oct and Jan to Mar and early starts give you the best chance. Cloud can hide the peak, so two nights improves your odds.

How long is the drive to Amboseli on a 3 day Amboseli safari?

The road trip takes 4 to 5 hours each way from Nairobi, with a stop for coffee. A flight from Wilson Airport takes about 45 minutes if you want to save time.

Is a 3 day Amboseli safari good for children?

Yes. The drive is shorter than to the Mara and elephants are easy to see from the vehicle. Park fees for ages 9 to 17 are about half price and children under 9 are free.

What animals will I see on a 3 day Amboseli safari?

Elephants are the stars, with buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, hippo and many birds. Lion and cheetah appear often and leopard and rhino are rare. Amboseli does not have Big Five odds like the Mara.

Is it better to visit Amboseli for 2 or 3 days?

Three days gives you a full day and two game drives on each side. A 2 day trip works, but a 3 day Amboseli safari gives better light, more time at the swamps and a calmer pace.
