Kilimanjaro Climbing Cost and Routes

Kilimanjaro is not a technical climb. It is a long walk at altitude, and altitude is what turns people back. Here is our price and an honest view of what decides success.

Kilimanjaro climbing cost

TripDaysFrom
Mount Kilimanjaro Trek and Wildlife Safari7USD 2,390

The price includes park and rescue fees, camping or hut accommodation, all meals on the mountain, a licensed guide, porters and transfers. Park fees alone run to several hundred dollars per climber, which is why a very cheap Kilimanjaro quote almost always means underpaid porters.

Days decide whether you summit

Success rates rise sharply with each extra day, because each extra day is another night to acclimatise. Five day climbs have poor summit rates. Seven days and above are where the numbers get good.

Anyone selling you a short cheap climb is selling you a lower chance of standing on the top. That is the whole trade.

Altitude, plainly

Uhuru Peak is 5,895 metres. Headache, breathlessness and poor sleep are normal above 4,000 metres. Confusion, a bad cough or loss of balance are not, and they mean going down immediately. Our guides carry a pulse oximeter and check every climber daily.

Walk slowly. Pole pole is not a slogan, it is the technique. Drink three to four litres a day even when you do not want to.

When to climb

January to mid March is warmer and quieter.

June to October is the driest and the busiest.

April, May and November are wet. The mountain is quiet and the trails are hard going.

Common questions

Do I need climbing experience? No. You need to be able to walk five to seven hours a day for several days.

What about porters? We pay the KPAP recommended rates and we weigh loads. Ask any operator this question, the answer tells you a lot about them.

Can I add a safari? Yes, and most people do. Coming down and going straight to the Serengeti is the right order.
