Cheap beach hotels in Mombasa do exist. You just have to know where to look and when to go. Most good value rooms sit in Bamburi and further north towards Mtwapa and Kikambala. Nyali is pricier because it is closest to town.

Where are the cheap beach hotels in Mombasa?
Most are in Bamburi and north towards Shanzu, Mtwapa and Kikambala. These areas have many mid size hotels, guesthouses and holiday apartments close to the sand.
Nyali has the most famous resorts but fewer budget rooms. The South Coast at Diani also has budget options, such as Diani Reef at about KES 10,700 per person with breakfast. Diani is a longer drive from the SGR though. Our Bamburi Beach guide explains the area.
Shanzu sits between the two. It has a few large resorts that drop their prices sharply in the low season, plus small guesthouses on the side roads. Mtwapa is known for nightlife, so expect music late on weekends if you stay near the main road.
Which cheap beach hotels in Mombasa offer the best value?
For a simple, clean room near the beach, Kahama Hotel in Bamburi is good value at about KES 8,000 per double room with breakfast. Three friends can share a triple for about KES 11,000.
For the lowest rate, Boko Boko Porini in Kikambala starts at about KES 3,250 per person with breakfast for residents. It has a nature setting rather than a big resort feel, so check beach access when you book. For groups of five or six, a holiday villa in Bamburi can work out cheaper per head than hotel rooms.
Is budget all inclusive possible?
Yes, if you choose carefully. Neptune Beach Resort in Bamburi was about USD 206 per room per night for two on Travelocity in November 2026. That is about KES 13,300 per person with all meals and local drinks.

Can you stay in town and still enjoy the beach?
Yes. It is the cheapest way to do Mombasa. Town hotels around Tudor and Tangana list rooms from about USD 18 to 50 a night on Expedia. That is about KES 2,300 to 6,500.
From town, a Bolt ride to Jomo Kenyatta Public Beach in Bamburi takes about 30 to 40 minutes, traffic depending. The public beach is free. You lose the hotel pool and sun beds, but you save a lot.
If you go this route, stay near the Old Town. You can walk to Fort Jesus, eat cheap street food in the evening and take a tuk tuk to the ferry or the beach in the morning. Just keep valuables in the room and use a ride app after dark.
When are cheap beach hotels in Mombasa cheapest?
April to June is the cheapest season on the coast. Big hotels cut rates after Easter. For example, Voyager's garden room drops to about USD 230 for two from April to June, against about USD 320 from July to October.

How do you get there cheaply from Nairobi?
Take the SGR in economy. It costs KES 1,500 one way and about 5 to 6 hours. Children aged 3 to 11 pay half. Book early, because cheap seats sell out on Fridays and in holidays.

Small choices add up fast on a beach trip. These are the tips we share most with budget travellers.
- Travel Sunday to Thursday
- Go between April and June
- Choose bed and breakfast and eat Swahili food outside the hotel
- Share triple rooms or a villa with friends
- Use SGR economy and Bolt instead of private transfers
- Do free things: the public beach, Old Town walks and the Nyali sunset
- Pay in instalments early so you lock in the current rate
What does a budget beach weekend cost for two?
Here is a real example for two people from Nairobi, staying 2 nights at Kahama Hotel in Bamburi with breakfast. It uses 2026 prices and shows where the money goes.
The total comes to about KES 32,000 to 36,000 for two, or KES 16,000 to 18,000 each. You can cut it further by travelling mid week and eating at local Swahili spots instead of hotel restaurants. You can raise it by adding a dhow cruise or a snorkelling trip.

Check the true distance to the beach. Some hotels say beach but sit across the main road. Ask whether the room has air conditioning or only a fan, because the coast is hot and humid most of the year.

Finally, ask about the cancellation policy. Cheap rates are often non refundable. If your dates might change, a slightly higher flexible rate can save you money in the end.
