When is the best time to visit Mombasa for beach weather?
January to March is the best time for classic beach weather. Days reach about 32 C with 9 hours of sunshine. February is the driest month, with only about 17 mm of rain on 3 days.
The catch is humidity. It feels sticky, especially in the afternoon. Plan the beach for the morning and the pool or a nap for the hottest hours. December is also sunny, but it has more short showers and the festive crowds.
What is Mombasa like month by month?
Here is the short version for each month. Use it with the weather table above to pick your dates.
- January: hot, sunny and dry. Busy in the first week after New Year.
- February: the driest month. Great for beach days and boat trips.
- March: still hot and mostly dry. Rain starts building late in the month.
- April: wet and humid with Easter crowds. Prices dip after Easter.
- May: the wettest month and the cheapest. Some small hotels close.
- June: rain eases, air cools down. Good value for couples.
- July: cool and breezy with some showers. Busier with overseas visitors.
- August: school holidays. Cooler, drier and lively.
- September: one of the best all round months. Sunny and calmer.
- October: warm with light short rains starting. Fair prices.
- November: warmer with short showers. Quiet before the festive rush.
- December: hot and sunny, then very busy and expensive from about 20 December.
When is the rainy season in Mombasa?
Mombasa has two rainy seasons. The long rains run from about April to June and peak in May, which gets about 275 mm of rain on 19 days. The short rains come from about October to December and are much lighter.
Coast rain often falls as heavy showers, then the sun comes out. Many people still enjoy beach holidays in the rains. Pack a light rain jacket and plan indoor options like Fort Jesus for wet afternoons.
If you travel in the rains, choose a hotel with a good pool, a spa and covered dining. That way a wet afternoon still feels like a holiday.

When is Mombasa cheapest?
For most big resorts, April to June is the cheapest time. Voyager Beach Resort in Nyali charges about USD 230 per night for two in a garden room from 7 April to 30 June 2026. The same room is about USD 320 from July to October and about USD 530 over Christmas and New Year.
Some resident rates follow a different pattern. PrideInn's 2026 resident half board rate was lowest from January to March, at about KES 27,000 per double. It was about KES 32,000 from May to July and September to November. Always compare a few hotels for your dates.
Mid week nights also help. Many hotels charge less from Sunday to Thursday than on Friday and Saturday. If you can take two days off work, a Sunday to Wednesday trip by SGR is often the cheapest way to enjoy the coast.
- Cheapest: after Easter to end of June
- Good value: September to November
- Higher: July to August and school holidays
- Most expensive: about 20 December to 2 January
What is the best time to visit Mombasa with kids?
Most families travel in the school holidays in April, August and December. August is a great choice. It is cooler, less humid and drier than April, so children cope better with the heat.
Book early for any school holiday. SGR seats and family rooms sell out weeks ahead. If your children are not yet in school, travel in September, October or late January for calmer beaches and lower prices.
When is the sea best for swimming and snorkelling?
The sea is warm all year, from about 25 C in August and September to 29 C in April. It is usually calmest and clearest from about October to March. That makes it the best time for glass bottom boats and snorkelling in the marine park.
From June to September the south east winds can make the sea choppier and the water a little cloudier. Kite surfers love these months. Snorkellers should go out near low tide and early in the day.
When is the best time to visit Mombasa for walking and sightseeing?
June to September is the most comfortable time for walking. Highs are about 28 C and the air is less humid. It is the best season for long Old Town walks, Fort Jesus and day trips.
If you visit in the hot months, start early. Fort Jesus and the Old Town are much nicer at 8am than at 1pm. Our things to do in Mombasa guide lists ideas for every kind of day.
Which dates should you book early?
Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks of the year on the coast. Rates roughly double at many hotels from about 20 December. Book by September for the best choice. See our Mombasa Christmas and New Year packages for ready made plans.
Easter, the August school holiday and long weekends also fill up fast. Check our Kenya public holidays list to spot long weekends before everyone else does.
Does Ramadan affect a Mombasa trip?
A little, mostly in a good way. In the Old Town, some cafes close during the day and the streets are quieter. After sunset the town comes alive with food stalls and families out walking.
Beach hotels run as normal. Dress modestly in the Old Town and avoid eating in the street during fasting hours. Ramadan dates move each year and depend on the moon, so we check them for your trip.
Can you combine Mombasa with a safari?
Yes. Tsavo East and Tsavo West are a few hours from Mombasa. The dry months of June to October and January to February are best for game viewing, because animals gather near water.
That fits nicely with the cooler months on the coast. Our Kenya safari and beach holiday combines both in one trip.
So what is our honest answer?
For sun lovers, go in January or February. For comfort and value, go in September or October. For the lowest prices, go in late April to June and accept some rain.
Avoid the festive season if you hate crowds or high prices. If you must travel then, book early and pay in instalments. Our cheap Mombasa holiday packages are built for budget dates.
