Day by day plan
- Day 1
Hell's Gate climbing day
Pickup in Nairobi at about 6:30 am. Drive about 2 hours to Hell's Gate National Park near Naivasha. Your instructor runs a safety briefing at Fischer's Tower and fits your harness and helmet. You climb on top rope, so the rope always holds you from above. Beginners start on easier lines. Lunch in the shade, then more climbing or a ride through the park on hired bikes. Zebras and giraffes graze close by. Drive to your lodge or camp near the lake. Dinner and a campfire.
- Day 2
Gorge walk or Longonot hike, then Nairobi
Choose your second day. Walk the Ol Njorowa gorge in Hell's Gate with a ranger guide, past hot springs and steep red walls. Or climb Mount Longonot, a 3 to 4 hour hike around a crater rim with views over the Rift Valley. Both start early to beat the heat. Lunch near Naivasha, then drive back to Nairobi. You arrive in the early evening, tired and happy.

Where can you go rock climbing in Kenya?
Lukenya is the main crag. It sits off the Mombasa highway about 45 minutes from Nairobi. Climbing guides list around 250 routes on its cliffs plus more than 400 boulder problems. Most visitors climb mid grades, with harder lines for experts.
Hell's Gate National Park near Naivasha is the second big area. Fischer's Tower is a 25 metre volcanic plug that suits beginners. The cliffs along the valley hold longer trad routes for experienced climbers. Other crags around Nairobi include Ndeiya, Kiserian Gorge and Nzaui, which are quieter and best done with someone who knows the access.
What is rock climbing in Kenya like for beginners?
It is safe and fun when you climb with a qualified instructor. We use top rope climbing. The rope runs from your harness up to a fixed anchor at the top and back down to your instructor. If you slip, you hang on the rope. You do not fall.
Your first climb may feel hard on the arms. The trick is to push with your legs. Most first timers reach the top of at least one route by lunch. Wear sports clothes that let you stretch and bring a light jacket.
- Children are welcome with a parent, so tell us their ages
- No experience needed
- Tell us about any injuries or fear of heights
- Remove rings and long earrings before you climb
How much does rock climbing in Kenya cost?
A guided Lukenya day costs from KES 10,500 per person in a group of four. A Hell's Gate day costs from KES 14,000 for Kenyan citizens. Prices include transport, instructor, gear, fees and lunch.
Fees are part of the difference. Lukenya is owned by the Mountain Club of Kenya, which charges non members a daily fee of KES 400 for Kenyan citizens and KES 800 for others. Hell's Gate entry is KES 500 for East African citizens, KES 675 for residents and USD 50 for non residents under the KWS fees from October 2025. Climbing at Fischer's Tower is paid separately from the park fee.

Why climb with a planned day instead of going alone?
You can climb independently if you have your own gear and skills. Many people do not. Renting gear, finding a trusted instructor, arranging transport and paying fees takes time. We handle it all in one booking.
There is also access. The Mountain Club of Kenya asks commercial groups to agree visits with them first at Lukenya. We take care of that, so your group arrives with permission and a plan.
Can you climb Mount Kenya's rock peaks?
Yes, but it is a serious technical climb. Batian and Nelion, the two highest summits, need rope work at altitude above 5,000 metres. Climbers practise at Lukenya and Hell's Gate first.
Point Lenana, the third summit, is a trek with no rope climbing. See our Batian and Nelion technical climb or the trekking options in Mount Kenya climbing packages.
Where can you practise indoors?
Nairobi has an indoor climbing wall at Diamond Plaza in Parklands. A session costs about KES 1,700, or KES 13,000 for a group of 10, based on published rates. It is a good way to build grip strength before your first outdoor day.
In Nanyuki, the Mount Kenya Climbing Gym offers top rope climbing and bouldering, with a cafe on site. It suits climbers on their way to Mount Kenya or a Laikipia safari.
When is the best season to climb near Nairobi?
The dry months are best: January to March and June to October. Rock stays dry and grip is good. Avoid heavy rain in April, May and November. Wet rock is slippery and the Hell's Gate gorge can flood fast after storms.
Start early. Hell's Gate gets hot by midday and there is little shade on the walls. Bring sunscreen, a hat and at least 2 litres of water.
Can companies book rock climbing for team building?
Yes. Climbing works well for teams because people must trust the person holding the rope. We run climbing days for groups of 10 to 40, with stations for climbing, belay practice and simple ground games while people wait.
Pair it with lunch at a lakeside venue for a full day. See our team building activities in Nairobi or our team building venues in Naivasha.
How do you book?
Send us a WhatsApp message with your date, group size and experience level. We confirm the crag, instructor and price in writing. A deposit by Mpesa, bank or card holds the date. The balance is due a few days before the climb.
Authentic Adventures has organised trips from Nairobi since 2015. Our office is at Pili Trade Centre on Mombasa Road. Pair your climb with one of our hiking trips from Nairobi for a full weekend outdoors.

Questions people ask
Where is the best rock climbing near Nairobi?
Lukenya is the best known crag near Nairobi. It is about 45 minutes away on the Mombasa highway, with hundreds of routes and a large bouldering area. Fischer's Tower in Hell's Gate National Park, about 2 hours away, is the favourite for beginners because of its short, friendly routes.
Do I need experience to climb on your guided days?
No. On our guided days a certified instructor sets up top ropes and teaches you the basics before you climb. The rope holds you if you slip. Most beginners reach the top of at least one route on their first day. Experienced climbers can ask for harder routes or lead climbing.
How tall is Fischer's Tower?
Fischer's Tower is about 25 metres high. It is an old volcanic plug standing alone on the floor of Hell's Gate National Park. Guides based at the tower provide ropes and helmets. The climbing fee is paid separately from the park entry fee, which is KES 500 for East African citizens.
How much is the Lukenya climbing fee?
The Mountain Club of Kenya owns most of Lukenya. Members climb free. Non members pay a daily fee of KES 400 for Kenyan citizens and KES 800 for others, paid by Mpesa. Commercial groups must agree visits with the club in advance, which we arrange for you.
What should I wear for rock climbing?
Wear stretchy sports trousers or shorts and a fitted T shirt. Bring closed shoes for the walk in, a light jacket, a hat and sunscreen. Tie back long hair. We provide harness and helmet. Climbing shoes in your size are on request, or climb in flat soled trainers.
Is outdoor climbing in Kenya safe?
It is safe when you climb with trained instructors and good gear. We use top ropes, helmets and checked harnesses for every climber. Accidents usually happen when people climb alone, skip helmets or climb on wet rock. We cancel or move dates when heavy rain makes the rock slippery.
