A Kenya safari for seniors should feel like a holiday, not an endurance test. Many safaris drive from Nairobi to the Masai Mara on a long road with rough final stretches. That is fine at 30. At 70 it can spoil the first two days. So we fly you there instead.
This trip is built around short game drives, long lunches and early nights. We pick rooms close to the restaurant, with level entry where the lodge has them. Your guide drives at your pace and stops whenever you ask. You still see the big animals. You just see them rested.
We plan for travellers in their 60s, 70s and 80s, with or without walking aids. Tell us what is hard for you and we shape the trip around it. For more general advice see our safari tips for seniors.

Day by day plan
- Day 1
Arrive in Nairobi
We meet you at the airport arrivals hall and help with bags. A short drive takes you to a quiet hotel in Nairobi. We ask for a ground floor or lift access room, with a walk in shower where the hotel has one. The rest of the day is yours. Nairobi sits at about 1,700 metres, so drink water and take it easy on the first evening. Night in Nairobi.
- Day 2
Giraffe Centre and flight to the Masai Mara
A slow breakfast, then a visit to the Giraffe Centre in Langata. You feed tall Rothschild giraffes from a raised platform, face to face. Drive to Wilson Airport for a light aircraft flight of about 45 minutes. Your Mara guide meets you at the airstrip. Lunch at the lodge and a rest. In the late afternoon, a short game drive of about 2 hours. Night in the Masai Mara.
- Day 3
Morning game drive and a quiet afternoon
Wildlife is most active early. You leave after a hot drink and come back for a late breakfast. Lions, elephants, buffalo and giraffes are common in the Maasai Mara. The afternoon is free for a nap on your veranda. If you feel strong, take a second short drive before sunset. If not, the lodge waterhole often brings the animals to you. Night in the Masai Mara.
- Day 4
Your choice of day in the Mara
Choose a full day out with a picnic lunch, or two short drives with lunch back at the lodge. Many guests pick the short option. From July to October the great migration is usually in the reserve. Your guide may take you towards the Mara River. A visit to a Maasai village is possible if the walking is easy for you. Night in the Masai Mara.
- Day 5
Fly back and drive to Lake Naivasha
A gentle morning, then fly back to Nairobi. Your driver meets you at Wilson and drives about 2 hours to Lake Naivasha, with a comfort stop on the way. Check in to a lakeside lodge with ground floor rooms. Sit on the lawn and watch for waterbuck and birds. An early dinner and a good sleep. Night at Lake Naivasha.
- Day 6
Boat ride and departure
After breakfast, take a one hour boat ride on Lake Naivasha. Staff help you on and off the boat. You will see hippos, fish eagles and pelicans close up. Then drive back to Nairobi, about 2.5 hours, for lunch and your evening flight. We can book a day room near the airport if your flight is late.

What makes a Kenya safari for seniors different?
Pace, comfort and fewer surprises. A standard safari packs early starts, long drives and a new lodge every night. Ours keeps you in one Mara lodge for three nights. Game drives last 2 to 3 hours. Every afternoon has time to rest.
We also look at small things. Which room is closest to the dining area. Whether the bathroom has a step. Whether the vehicle has a front seat that is easy to reach. We ask these questions before we book, so you do not discover them on arrival.
Why fly to the Masai Mara instead of driving?
The flight takes about 45 minutes from Wilson Airport. The road takes 5 to 6 hours. Some stretches near the reserve are rough. For many older travellers that drive is the hardest part of the trip.
Small planes have a weight limit of about 15 kg per person in a soft bag. We store extra luggage in Nairobi for free. Steps up to the aircraft are short. Ground staff help you on board. If you prefer not to fly, we offer a road version with extra rest stops and the shortest route. See our road versus fly in comparison.
Which lodges have few steps or accessible rooms?
Lodges change rooms over time, so we always confirm before booking. A wheelchair traveller who toured Kenya reported these useful options. Sarova Mara Game Camp, near the reserve entrance, has two accessible tents with level entry and grab bars. Ashnil Mara Camp has an accessible tent with a roll in shower.
At Lake Naivasha, Lake Naivasha Sopa Resort has two ground floor accessible rooms. Great Rift Valley Lodge above the lake has a cabin with a roll in shower and fold down seat. In Nairobi, Southern Sun Mayfair has an accessible room near the lobby.
- Ask for a room near the main building
- Ask for a walk in shower and grab bars
- Check if paths are paved or gravel
- Bring your own shower stool if you rely on one

How much does a Kenya safari for seniors cost?
Our fly in trip costs from KES 349,500 (about USD 2,710) per person sharing, January to June. From July to September it is about KES 454,500 (USD 3,520), because lodge rates and park fees double. The road version starts from KES 267,000 (USD 2,070).
The Masai Mara fee is the biggest moving part. Non resident adults pay USD 100 per day from January to June and USD 200 from July to December. You can see every park fee in our Kenya park entry fees guide.
Is a Kenya safari for seniors safe for people with health conditions?
Many travellers with heart conditions, diabetes or replaced joints enjoy safaris. The key is planning. See your doctor 6 weeks before you travel. Ask about yellow fever and malaria tablets. Carry your medicines in your hand luggage with a printed list.
Buy travel insurance that covers medical evacuation. In Kenya, AMREF Flying Doctors offer short term evacuation cover that many visitors add. The Mara has clinics and airstrips. Nairobi has good private hospitals. Read our vaccinations and malaria guide before you book flights.
How do you make game drives comfortable?
You get a private vehicle, so the group is just you and your travel partner. We carry a portable step for climbing in. The front seat is yours if it is easier. Your guide drives slowly on bumpy tracks and stops for a stretch every hour.
We pack cushions, warm blankets for cool mornings and plenty of water. A toilet stop at a lodge or ranger post is never far. If you get tired, say so. We head back. The animals will still be there tomorrow.
When is the best time to travel?
June to October is dry and cool, with the great migration from about July. It is also the busiest and most expensive time. January and February are warm and dry with lower prices. Avoid April and May, the long rains, when tracks get muddy.
Mornings and evenings in the Mara can drop to about 10 to 12 degrees. Pack a fleece and a light rain jacket. Our best time to visit the Masai Mara guide has a month by month view.
How do you book?
Send us a WhatsApp message with your dates, ages and anything that is hard for you, such as stairs or long walks. We reply with a written plan and price. A deposit by bank transfer or card holds your rooms and flights. The balance is due before you travel.

Questions people ask
Am I too old for a Kenya safari?
Very few people are too old. We plan safaris for travellers in their 70s and 80s. What matters is how you handle sitting in a vehicle for 2 to 3 hours and climbing a step. If walking is hard, we choose rooms with level entry and plan shorter drives. Talk to your doctor before you book.
What is the easiest safari in Kenya for older travellers?
A fly in trip to the Masai Mara is the easiest full safari. The flight takes about 45 minutes, so you skip a 5 to 6 hour road. For a shorter taste, Nairobi National Park sits just outside the city and needs no long drive. Lake Naivasha adds a gentle boat ride.
Are there wheelchair accessible safari lodges in Kenya?
Some lodges have adapted rooms. Sarova Mara Game Camp and Ashnil Mara Camp in the Masai Mara have accessible tents. Lake Naivasha Sopa Resort has ground floor accessible rooms. Features differ, so we confirm grab bars, shower type and path surfaces with each lodge before we book for you.
How long is the flight from Nairobi to the Masai Mara?
About 45 minutes from Wilson Airport, depending on which airstrip your lodge uses. Some flights stop at more than one strip. Planes are small, with a luggage limit of about 15 kg in a soft bag. We keep any extra bags safe in Nairobi until you return.
Do I need travel insurance for a safari?
Yes. Choose a policy that covers medical treatment and evacuation from remote areas. Declare any existing conditions. Many visitors also add AMREF Flying Doctors evacuation cover for their days in Kenya. Carry a copy of your policy and your medicine list in your hand luggage.
