A Mombasa to Malindi day trip is the easiest way to see the north coast without moving hotels. You leave early, swim in Watamu Marine Park while the tide is right, walk the old stone town of Gede and finish with ice cream on the Malindi sea front. We drive you back the same evening.

Most people think Malindi is too far for one day. It is not, if you start early and keep the day simple. The road from Mombasa runs through Mtwapa, Kilifi and Watamu. Traffic at Mtwapa is the only real slow point. Our drivers know when to leave so you beat it.

This page shows the real plan, the real fees and what we charge. Prices come from the current Kenya Wildlife Service and National Museums of Kenya fee lists. If you would rather sleep over, look at our Watamu packages for residents instead.

Highlights

  • Glass bottom boat and snorkelling in Watamu Marine National Park
  • Guided walk through Gede Ruins, a Swahili town abandoned centuries ago

  • Optional sunset at Marafa Hell's Kitchen for small groups
  • Private van with pop up roof and an English and Swahili speaking driver
  • Pay a deposit by Mpesa and clear the rest before the day

How long is a Mombasa to Malindi day trip?

Plan for 12 hours door to door. Malindi is about 117 km north of Mombasa by road. Watamu is about 20 km before Malindi. The drive takes 2 to 3 hours each way, depending on traffic at Mtwapa and on the Kilifi bridge.

That leaves about 6 hours on the ground. It is enough for the marine park, Gede and a slow lunch. It is not enough to add a long boat trip to Mida Creek as well. Pick what matters most and enjoy it.

  • 6:30am pick up in Mombasa, Nyali, Bamburi or Shanzu
  • 9:00am Watamu Marine Park boat and snorkel
  • 11:30am Gede Ruins guided walk
  • 1:00pm lunch in Watamu or Malindi
  • 2:30pm Malindi sea front and the Vasco da Gama Pillar
  • 3:30pm start the drive back
  • 6:30pm drop off at your hotel

What does the Mombasa to Malindi day trip cost in 2026?

It costs from KES 10,500 per person for four Kenyan citizens. Two citizens pay about KES 15,000 each because the van cost is split between fewer people. Non residents pay more because park fees are set in US dollars.

We build the price from four things. The van and fuel for the day. The official park and museum fees. The boat in Watamu. Lunch. We then add our margin for planning, the driver and backup if anything goes wrong on the road.

How much are the Watamu Marine Park and Gede Ruins fees?

Watamu Marine National Park is run by the Kenya Wildlife Service. Under the 2025 KWS fee list, East African citizens pay KES 500 per adult and KES 250 per child. Kenya residents pay KES 675 per adult. Non residents pay USD 25 per adult.

Gede Ruins is run by the National Museums of Kenya. From 7 May 2026, citizens pay KES 200 per adult and KES 100 per child. Residents and visitors from the rest of Africa pay USD 6. Visitors from outside Africa pay USD 8. The Malindi Museum uses the same rates.

  • Watamu Marine Park: KES 500 citizen, KES 675 resident, USD 25 non resident
  • Gede Ruins: KES 200 citizen, USD 6 resident, USD 8 non resident
  • Children pay about half at both sites
Snorkelling in clear Indian Ocean water

What will you see in Watamu Marine Park?

You will see coral gardens, reef fish and, on a good day, green turtles. The glass bottom boat lets children and non swimmers see the reef without getting wet. Strong swimmers can snorkel off the boat with a mask and fins.

Timing matters here. The best snorkelling is near low tide, when the water over the coral is calm and clear. We check the tide table before your date and may swap the order of the day so you hit the reef at the right time.

Why is Gede Ruins worth the stop?

Gede is the ruin of a Swahili stone town hidden in coastal forest near Watamu. People lived here from about the 12th century and left it around the 17th century. You walk past a great mosque, a palace, houses and old wells.

A site guide tells the story as you walk. Look up as well. Sykes monkeys move through the trees and kids love spotting them. The Kipepeo Butterfly Project at the entrance is a short extra stop if you have time.

What can you do in Malindi in a few hours?

Malindi is a relaxed old town with a long sea front. In a short visit you can stand at the Vasco da Gama Pillar, which dates from 1498, walk the old town lanes and have Italian ice cream. Malindi has many Italian run cafes and pizza places.

If you love the ocean more than history, swap Gede for Malindi Marine Park. It has the same KWS fee as Watamu. Read more on our Malindi guide before you choose.

Can you add Marafa Hell's Kitchen on a Mombasa to Malindi day trip?

Yes, but only for small groups who accept a very long day. Marafa sits about 1 to 1.5 hours inland from Malindi. Its red and orange sandstone canyon glows at sunset. That means you reach Mombasa again near 10pm.

Our honest advice is to see Marafa on an overnight trip. Sleep in Watamu or Malindi and do it fresh. Our Malindi beach holiday package includes time for it. If you still want it in one day, add KES 2,500 per person for the extra fuel, driver hours and the local guide.

Which is better: this trip or a night in Watamu?

Choose the day trip if you are already staying in Mombasa and have one free day. Choose a night in Watamu if you want Mida Creek, a dhow sunset or Marafa without rushing.

Many of our clients do both. They stay three nights in Nyali or Bamburi and give one day to the north coast. See our full list of day trips from Mombasa if you want to compare.

What should you carry?

Pack light but smart. The sun on the boat is strong and Gede has shade but no beach.

Bring your ID or passport. KWS and the museums ask for it to charge citizen or resident rates.

  • Swimsuit and a towel
  • Reef safe sunscreen and a hat
  • Comfortable shoes for Gede
  • ID card or passport
  • Cash or Mpesa for snacks and tips
  • A dry bag for your phone on the boat

When is the best time for a Mombasa to Malindi day trip?

The best months are December to March and September to November. The sea is usually calmer and clearer then. April and May bring the long rains, which can make the boat trip choppy and the reef cloudy.

Weekdays are quieter than weekends at Gede and on the Watamu boats. During school holidays we book the boat a few days ahead. You can also join this trip as one day of a longer Mombasa package.

Optional add on

Add a round of golf to this trip

You are already at the coast. Vipingo Ridge and Nyali sit on the north coast, so a round slots into any free morning.

Where would you like to stay?

FromKES 41,100per person, two golfers sharing
  • Green fee and caddie
  • Clubhouse lunch
  • Private car and driver
  • Tee time booked for you

Guide price for a weekday round. Weekend rounds, buggies, club hire and more golfers are all in the planner. We confirm every line in writing before you pay.

Questions people ask

How far is Malindi from Mombasa?

Malindi is about 117 km north of Mombasa by road. The drive takes 2 to 3 hours depending on traffic at Mtwapa and Kilifi. Watamu is about 20 km before Malindi, so most day trips stop there first for the marine park and Gede Ruins.

Is a day trip from Mombasa to Malindi worth it?

Yes, if you start early and keep the plan simple. You get the best of the north coast in one day: reef, ruins and the Malindi sea front. If you want Marafa or Mida Creek too, we suggest one night in Watamu or Malindi so the day does not feel rushed.

What is the Gede Ruins entry fee?

From 7 May 2026 the National Museums of Kenya charge Kenyan and East African citizens KES 200 per adult and KES 100 per child. Residents and visitors from the rest of Africa pay USD 6 per adult. Visitors from outside Africa pay USD 8 per adult and USD 4 per child.

What is the Watamu Marine Park entry fee?

Under the 2025 Kenya Wildlife Service fee list, citizens pay KES 500 per adult and KES 250 per child. Kenya residents pay KES 675 per adult. Non residents pay USD 25 per adult and USD 15 per child. The boat trip is a separate cost, which is included in our package.

Can we do this trip by public transport?

You can take a matatu or bus from Mombasa to Malindi, then hire a tuk tuk for Gede and a boat in Watamu. It is cheaper but slow. You also bargain for every leg. A private van saves about two hours and gives you a safe place to leave your bags.

Can children join the Malindi day trip?

Yes. Children love the glass bottom boat and the monkeys at Gede. Children aged 3 to 11 pay about half the park fees and get a lower package price. We carry child seats on request. For babies the 12 hour day can be long, so we may suggest a shorter Watamu only version.

Sources we checked: Kenya Wildlife Service conservation fees 2025; National Museums of Kenya revised admission fees 2026; The Star: new museum entry fees take effect, May 2026; Mombasa to Malindi road distance; Gede, Kenya history; Watamu Marine National Park visitor info. Rules and fees change, so we confirm them again when you book.

Ready when you are. Send your dates and group size. We reply with a clear price and a plan you can change.
