A Mombasa to Lamu trip takes you from a busy port city to Kenya's oldest living Swahili town. Lamu Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has narrow lanes, carved wooden doors and almost no cars. People move by foot, donkey and boat.

The hard part is getting there. Lamu sits about 320 km north of Mombasa and the last stretch is by water. This page shows both ways in, by air and by road, with honest times and costs. Then it gives you a 4 day plan you can book with one WhatsApp message.

We have kept the plan slow on purpose. Lamu rewards people who walk, sit and watch. If you only have a weekend, a beach stay closer to Mombasa makes more sense. See our Lamu holiday packages for longer stays and luxury options.

Highlights

  • Two ways in: a short flight to Manda or the road via Mokowe jetty
  • Guided walk through Lamu Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Lamu Museum, Lamu Fort and the Swahili House on one combined ticket
  • Sunset dhow sail between Lamu and Manda islands
  • Takwa Ruins and the long empty beach at Shela
  • Choose a simple Shela guesthouse or a top hotel like Peponi

Day by day plan

  1. Day 1

    Mombasa to Lamu

By air, you take a morning flight from Moi International Airport in Mombasa to Manda airport. A short boat ride takes you across the channel to Lamu town or Shela. By road, you leave Mombasa early on a coach through Malindi and Garsen to Mokowe jetty, then cross by boat. Either way, we meet you at the jetty and walk you to your guesthouse. Spend the evening on the sea front, watching dhows come in and trying fresh juice and samosas.

  2. Day 2

    Lamu Old Town on foot

After breakfast a local guide takes you through the old town. You see carved Swahili doors, mosques, the market and the main square in front of Lamu Fort. Your combined ticket covers Lamu Museum, Lamu Fort, the Swahili House and the German Post Office. Lunch is Swahili food in town. In the afternoon walk or take a boat to Shela and swim. Rest before dinner.

  3. Day 3

Dhow sail, Takwa Ruins and Shela

Today is about the water. A dhow takes you across to Manda Island to see Takwa Ruins, a Swahili town abandoned centuries ago. You stop for a swim on a sandbank if the tide allows. Back in Shela, climb the sand dunes behind the village for the view. Your sunset dhow sail goes past mangroves and fishing boats as the call to prayer starts across the water.

  4. Day 4

    Lamu back to Mombasa

Have a slow breakfast and one last walk along the harbour. Then take the boat to Manda airport for your flight to Mombasa, or to Mokowe for the coach south. We time your return so you can connect to the SGR or a flight home to Nairobi the same evening if you need to. If you have time, add a night in Malindi on the way back.

How do you get from Mombasa to Lamu?

You either fly or go by road. Flying takes about an hour in the air to Manda airport, then 10 to 15 minutes by boat to Lamu. Road travel takes 6 to 9 hours by coach to Mokowe jetty, then about 15 to 20 minutes by boat.

Both are fine. The flight saves a full day of your holiday. The road saves money and shows you the north coast. If you start in Nairobi, take the SGR to Mombasa the day before or fly straight to Lamu from Nairobi.

Is a Mombasa to Lamu trip by road safe?

Coaches run the route daily and many locals use it. Buses are escorted by police from the Gamba checkpoint north of Garsen. A bus that misses the escort may have to wait, so coaches leave Mombasa early.

We check the latest security advice before every road booking. If anything changes, we move you to a flight. For a calm first visit, most of our clients choose to fly at least one way.

How much does a Mombasa to Lamu trip cost?

Our 4 day packages start at KES 52,000 per person sharing by road. Flying in and staying in a simple guesthouse costs about KES 75,000. A stay at Peponi Hotel in Shela costs about KES 156,500 per person sharing.

Flights from Mombasa to Lamu start at about USD 72 one way on booking sites but often cost more near the date. Coach seats cost about USD 18 one way. Lamu guesthouses in Shela start at about USD 80 to 90 per person per night.

  • Coach Mombasa to Mokowe: about USD 18 one way, confirmed when you book
  • Flight Mombasa to Manda: from about USD 72 one way, often KES 10,000 to 20,000
  • Lamu combined heritage ticket: KES 750 citizen, USD 24 resident, USD 40 non resident
  • Takwa Ruins: KES 200 citizen, USD 6 resident, USD 8 non resident
Guest on a Kenya beach

Where should you stay: Lamu town, Shela or Manda?

Stay in Lamu town if you want culture, food and the harbour at your door. Lamu House is a good pick on the waterfront. Stay in Shela if you want the beach. It is quieter and has Peponi Hotel, The Fort and many guesthouses like Banana House and Forodhani House.

Stay on Manda Island for privacy and luxury. The Majlis Resort sits there, facing Shela across the channel. Prices there start much higher, at about USD 450 per person per night.

What can you do on a 4 day Mombasa to Lamu trip?

Walk, eat and sail. Lamu is not about ticking boxes. Spend one day in the old town, one day on the water and one slow day in Shela.

Popular extras include deep sea fishing, a visit to Pate Island and its Siyu Fort. A Swahili cooking lesson is another favourite. Our dhow sailing in Lamu page has longer sailing trips.

  • Lamu Old Town walk with a local guide
  • Lamu Museum, Lamu Fort and the Swahili House
  • Sunset dhow sail
  • Takwa Ruins on Manda Island
  • Shela beach and sand dunes
  • Fresh seafood on the harbour

When is the best time to visit Lamu?

The best months are December to March and July to October. The weather is mostly dry and the sea is good for sailing. April to June brings the long rains and some guesthouses close.

Lamu also has festivals. The Lamu Cultural Festival fills the town with dhow races and donkey races. Book flights and rooms early for those dates.

What should you wear in Lamu?

Lamu is a conservative Muslim town. Cover shoulders and knees when you walk in Lamu town and Shela village. Swimwear is fine on the beach and on boats.

Wear flat sandals. Lanes are narrow and you share them with donkeys. Carry cash as well as Mpesa, because small shops and boat captains often prefer cash.

Can you combine a Mombasa to Lamu trip with Malindi or Watamu?

Yes. It also makes the road option much easier. Break the drive with one or two nights in Watamu or Malindi. You then reach Lamu fresh instead of tired.

A good 7 day plan is two nights in Watamu, three in Lamu and two in Diani or Nyali. Our Kenya coast island hopping trip follows a similar route.

How do you book and pay?

Send us your dates, number of people and preferred option on WhatsApp. We confirm flights and rooms and send you a written quote.

Pay a deposit by Mpesa, bank transfer or card to hold the booking. You can clear the rest in instalments before you travel. Our lipa mdogo mdogo plans explain how.

Optional add on

Add a round of golf to this trip

You are already at the coast. Vipingo Ridge and Nyali sit on the north coast, so a round slots into any free morning.

Questions people ask

How long is the flight from Mombasa to Lamu?

The flight to Manda airport, which serves Lamu, takes about an hour in the air, though some routings connect via another airport. After landing you take a boat across the channel, which takes 10 to 15 minutes to Lamu town and a little longer to Shela.

How long does it take to drive from Mombasa to Lamu?

Allow 6 to 9 hours by coach from Mombasa to Mokowe jetty, depending on the road and the police escort timing at Gamba. Then a boat takes about 15 to 20 minutes to Lamu town. Coaches leave early in the morning to make the escort.

Is Lamu safe for tourists?

Lamu Island, Shela and Manda receive local and foreign visitors all year. Most visitors fly in. On the road, buses travel with a police escort from Gamba. We check current advice before every booking and switch you to a flight if needed.

Are there cars in Lamu?

Lamu Old Town has almost no cars. The lanes are too narrow. People walk, ride donkeys or take boats. Your luggage is carried from the jetty to your hotel by hand or by donkey cart, so pack a soft bag rather than a large hard suitcase.

How many days do you need in Lamu?

Three nights is the sweet spot. It gives you a day in the old town, a day on the water and a slow beach day in Shela. Two nights feels rushed once you add travel time. Five nights or more suits people who want to read, sail and really switch off.

What is the Lamu Museum entry fee?

From 7 May 2026, each Lamu heritage site costs KES 200 for citizen adults. A combined ticket for Lamu Museum, Lamu Fort, the Swahili House and the German Post Office costs KES 750 for citizens, USD 24 for residents and USD 40 for non residents.
