A Tanzania safari for East Africans costs a fraction of the visitor price, because park fees for East African citizens are set far below the USD rates foreigners pay. That one fact changes the whole budget.

Most of our Kenyan guests assume Tanzania is out of reach. It is not. With citizen park fees, a shared Land Cruiser and a Nairobi to Arusha shuttle, a short Tanzania trip can cost about the same as a Maasai Mara weekend.
This guide explains how a Tanzania safari for East Africans works, who qualifies for the lower fees and what each trip costs in KES. It also covers the border, the documents and the best months to go.
Highlights
- EAC citizen park fees of about TSh 10,000 a day at many parks
- Resident rates for foreigners living in East Africa, confirmed at booking
- Arusha pickups, with Nairobi shuttle options both ways
- Tarangire, Manyara, Ngorongoro and Serengeti plans from 3 to 5 days
- Shared 4×4 Land Cruisers with pop up roofs and driver guides
- Written KES quotes with every fee listed before you pay
Day by day plan
- Day 1
Nairobi to Arusha
Take the morning shuttle from Nairobi to Arusha, about 6 hours with the Namanga border stop. Complete exit and entry forms at the border. Our driver meets you in Arusha and takes you to your hotel. Use the evening to rest, repack and meet your guide for a short briefing about the plan.
- Day 2
Tarangire National Park
Drive about 2 hours to Tarangire for a full day of game viewing. The park is known for large elephant herds, baobab trees and many birds. Picnic lunch is served on the plains. In the evening you drive to your lodge near Lake Manyara or return to Arusha.
- Day 3
Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro rim
Spend the morning in Lake Manyara National Park, famous for its groundwater forest and tree climbing lions in some seasons. After lunch drive up to the Ngorongoro Highlands for the night. The rim air is cool and the views are huge.
- Day 4
Ngorongoro Crater and back
Descend into the crater at dawn for rhino, lion, hippo and flamingos on the soda lake. Picnic lunch on the crater floor. Climb out in the afternoon and drive back to Arusha for the night. Next morning you take the shuttle to Nairobi.

Tanzania safari for East Africans: the fee advantage
Foreign visitors pay about USD 59 to 83 a day at the main northern parks, plus a high crater fee. East African citizens pay a small amount in Tanzanian shillings, about TSh 10,000 for an adult at many parks, which is roughly KES 500.
A Tanzania safari for East Africans therefore costs far less than the standard brochure price. The savings go on lodges, the vehicle and a longer trip. Please note that fees are set by TANAPA and NCAA and may change, so we confirm them at booking.
Who counts as an East African citizen or resident
East African citizens hold a passport or national document from an EAC partner state, such as Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan or Tanzania. They qualify for the lowest rate.
Foreigners who live and work in the region may qualify for a resident rate, which sits between the citizen and visitor tiers. Bring a valid work permit or residence pass. A Tanzania safari for East Africans needs the original document at the gate, not a scan.
How much does a Tanzania safari for East Africans cost
Our guide prices start at KES 36,000 per person for 3 days from Arusha, with 4 travellers sharing. A 4 day Ngorongoro circuit is about KES 58,000 and a 5 day Serengeti trip is about KES 92,000.
The Nairobi shuttle adds about KES 9,700 return. Compare that with our Tanzania safari packages visitor prices, which start much higher. The gap is the park fee difference and it is real.

Getting from Nairobi to Arusha
The shuttle is the cheapest direct way, at about KES 4,855 each way and takes roughly 6 hours with the Namanga border. A private car takes about 4.5 hours and costs more. Flights cost about KES 38,000 to 40,000.
Our Tanzania safaris from Nairobi page covers each option. Many guests take the shuttle out and fly back after a long trip, which spreads the cost and saves time on the return.
Crossing at Namanga with the right documents
Carry your passport, because it is the safest document for the border. Check the validity of the passport, which should have at least 6 months left. EAC citizens do not need a visa for Tanzania.
Tanzania may ask for a yellow fever certificate from travellers who come from Kenya. Read our Kenya vaccinations and malaria guide and bring the yellow card. Foreign residents should also carry their work permit, in case the officer asks.
Best parks for a first Tanzania safari for East Africans
Tarangire is the best value first park. Elephants gather by the river in the dry months and the landscape is open and photogenic. Lake Manyara is compact and green. Ngorongoro Crater is a must for black rhino and dense lion sightings.
Serengeti is the big prize. If you can only afford one long trip, pick the Serengeti and Ngorongoro combination. See our Serengeti and Ngorongoro itinerary for the visitor version of the route.
Great Migration timing
The wildebeest are in the southern Serengeti from December to March for calving and in the north and the Mara from July to October. A rough guide is enough, since herds follow the rain.
Our Great Migration calendar explains the months in detail. A Tanzania safari for East Africans timed for February is a lovely choice, because the herds are on the plains and prices dip.
Kenya or Tanzania for a local traveller
Kenyans already enjoy low Mara rates, so compare before you choose. The Mara is closer and cheaper to reach. Tanzania offers bigger landscapes and the crater. Read our Kenya vs Tanzania safari guide for the main differences.
Many repeat travellers do both, starting with the Mara and moving to Tanzania in the next year. If you are unsure, send us a message with your dates and budget and we price both.
Fees, vehicle and group size
The vehicle is the biggest shared cost. A 7 seat Land Cruiser with a driver guide can host 4 to 6 guests comfortably. The more of you, the lower the price per person.
A Tanzania safari for East Africans works best with 4 or more travellers. Solo guests can join a group trip when dates match. Ask about this when you enquire and we tell you what is available.
A sample budget for a family of 4
Take a family of 4 on a 4 day Ngorongoro circuit at citizen rates. At KES 58,000 per person, the trip costs KES 232,000 for the family. Add KES 38,800 for the Nairobi shuttle, snacks and tips and the total is about KES 270,000.
That is a lot of money, but compare it with a visitor package of USD 1,300 per person. Four visitors would pay about KES 670,000. A Tanzania safari for East Africans keeps most of that in your pocket and the wildlife is the same.
Lodges and camps at local rates
Many Tanzanian lodges publish lower rates for East African residents, especially in the green season. We use budget camps and mid range lodges that accept these rates and keep full board included.
A Tanzania safari for East Africans can also use public campsites in some parks, which cuts costs further. Camping suits groups who like adventure and do not mind simple facilities. Ask us for the camping version and we send both prices.
What to pack for northern Tanzania
The Ngorongoro rim is cold at night, often near 8 degrees Celsius. Pack a fleece, a warm jacket and a hat. The plains are hot by day, so bring a sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
Add binoculars, a power bank and a soft bag, since hard suitcases do not fit well in the vehicle. Our packing checklist works for Tanzania too.
Safety, insurance and health
Tanzania is a safe, well run safari country when you travel with a registered guide. Keep your passport in a daybag, avoid walking alone at night in Arusha and follow your guide’s advice in the parks.
Buy travel insurance before you leave, because medical evacuation is expensive. Ask your doctor about malaria tablets and yellow fever. A Tanzania safari for East Africans takes you through areas with malaria risk, so bring repellent.

We live here. We drive these roads all year, we know which camps are honest about their photos and we know when a park is too busy to enjoy. Questions people ask
Do Kenyans pay less for Tanzania parks?
Yes. East African citizens pay a small TSh fee, about TSh 10,000 for an adult at many parks, instead of the USD rates foreigners pay. Rates can change, so we confirm each fee at booking and show it in your quote.
What proof of residency do I need to get resident rates?
Foreign residents need a valid work permit or residence pass from an East African country. Citizens carry the passport. Gate staff check the original, so scans do not work. Send us a photo when you book and we confirm your tier.
What is the difference between citizen and resident park fees in Kenya?
In Kenya, citizens pay the lowest KES fee, foreign residents pay a higher KES fee and visitors pay USD. Tanzania uses a similar system. A Tanzania safari for East Africans uses the citizen tier for EAC passports.
Are park fees included in resident packages?
In our Tanzania safari for East Africans packages the park fees are included and listed as separate lines. The Nairobi to Arusha shuttle is a separate line, so you can choose your own route to Arusha.
What is the cheapest month to travel locally in Kenya?
April and May usually give the lowest lodge rates in Kenya and Tanzania, with rain and fewer vehicles. Early November is also quiet. The Tanzania safari for East Africans months with the best weather, June to October, cost more.
How long is a good first Tanzania trip?
Three days is the minimum and covers Tarangire and Manyara. Four days adds the Ngorongoro Crater, which most guests find worth the cost. Five days or more gets you to the Serengeti without rushing.
Can I use my Kenyan ID at the border?
Most travellers use a passport, which is accepted everywhere. Some EAC citizens cross with a national ID, but rules vary and officers differ. We advise the passport and we confirm the current rule when you book.
