Cape Town on your list but no time for a visa queue?

A South Africa visa for Kenyans is not needed for tourism. Since January 2023, ordinary Kenyan passport holders can stay up to 90 days a year without one. You still need a passport valid 30 days past departure with two blank pages, a yellow fever certificate and, from July 2026, an online traveller declaration.

The search for a South Africa visa for Kenyans has a happy answer. You do not need one for a holiday. South Africa removed the visa requirement for Kenyan ordinary passport holders in January 2023. The exemption covers up to 90 days a year.

Visa free does not mean paper free. Border officers in Johannesburg and Cape Town still check your yellow fever card, passport pages and return ticket. A new online traveller declaration also started on 1 July 2026. This guide lists everything you need at the airport. Entry rules change. Authentic Adventures checks the current rule with South African authorities when you book.

Highlights

  • No visa for Kenyan ordinary passport holders visiting for tourism
  • Stay up to 90 days in a year

Is a South Africa visa for Kenyans needed for a holiday?

Yes. South Africa's foreign affairs department lists Kenya among countries whose ordinary passport holders are exempt from visas for up to 90 days a year. The exemption took effect in January 2023 after President Ramaphosa's visit to Nairobi.

The exemption covers tourism, visiting family, business meetings and transit. It does not cover work, study or long stays. For those you apply for the right visa before you travel.

South Africa visa for Kenyans: how long can you stay?

Up to 90 days in a year. The officer stamps your passport with the date you must leave. Check that date before you walk away from the desk.

Overstaying is serious. South Africa can declare overstayers undesirable and ban them from returning for a period. If plans change, speak to us early so we can move your return flight.

Do Kenyans need a yellow fever certificate for South Africa?

Yes. South Africa lists Kenya as a yellow fever risk country. Every traveller over one year old arriving from Kenya must show a valid yellow fever certificate. The same rule applies if you spent more than 12 hours in transit at an airport in a risk country.

Get the jab at an approved centre at least 10 days before you fly. Under the International Health Regulations the certificate is valid for life. Our yellow fever certificate guide lists where to get one in Kenya. Without it, you can be refused entry or held for quarantine.

What should Kenyans carry at the South African border?

No visa still means a full document check. Carry these in your hand luggage.

  • Kenyan passport valid at least 30 days beyond your departure date
  • At least two blank pages in the passport
  • Yellow fever certificate, the original yellow card
  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • Hotel bookings or your host's address
  • Proof of funds such as a bank card and recent statement
  • Confirmation of your online traveller declaration

What is the new South African traveller declaration?

From 1 July 2026 every traveller entering or leaving South Africa by air, land, sea or rail must make an online traveller declaration before travelling. It is run by SARS Customs. You can use the SARS online portal, the SATMS mobile app or Scan to Declare QR codes.

SARS publishes no fee for it. Travellers who have not declared are not refused entry for that reason alone. Officials and self service terminals at the airport help. Doing it at home saves you time in the arrivals hall.

South Africa visa for Kenyans travelling with children: what changes?

South Africa has special rules for travellers under 18. Carry each child's full birth certificate showing both parents. If one parent is not travelling, carry a signed consent letter and a copy of that parent's ID or passport.

These papers are not always asked for, but when they are, missing them can stop the trip. Home Affairs updates these rules, so we confirm them for your dates. Children over one year also need a yellow fever card.

Tips for a smooth arrival in Johannesburg or Cape Town

Keep your passport, yellow card, return ticket and hotel address in one folder. Officers ask simple questions: why you are visiting, where you will stay and when you leave. Short, honest answers work best.

Declare cash if you carry more than 25,000 rand per person, or foreign currency worth more than 10,000 US dollars in total. Most Kenyans travel with a card and a little cash instead. Tell your bank before you fly so your card works.

Plan your ride from the airport before you land. We arrange transfers in every package, so a driver meets you in arrivals. Load a South African data bundle or roaming plan for maps and messages. Uber and Bolt work in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Where to go once the South Africa visa question is sorted

Cape Town is the favourite for Kenyans. Table Mountain, the Cape Winelands, Cape Point and Boulders Beach penguins fill four to five days easily. Johannesburg suits shopping and business, with Sun City and Pilanesberg a short drive away.

Seasons run opposite to Europe. Cape Town is warm and mostly dry from November to March, which is peak season and the best beach weather. June to August is winter, with rain and cool days in Cape Town. Winter is a good time for game drives in Kruger, when the bush is thin and animals gather at water. Book December trips early because flights from Nairobi fill fast.

Flights from Nairobi to Johannesburg take about four hours. Our Cape Town packages from Nairobi and South Africa holiday packages include flights, hotels and tours. You can add Victoria Falls for a two country trip.

How Authentic Adventures helps

We book flights, hotels and transfers and send you a checklist for the airport. We remind you about the yellow fever card and the online declaration before you fly. You can pay a deposit and clear the balance in instalments through Mpesa, bank or card.

Questions people ask

Do Kenyans need a visa for South Africa?

No, not for tourism or short business visits. Since January 2023, Kenyan ordinary passport holders can visit South Africa without a visa for up to 90 days a year. You still need a valid passport, a yellow fever certificate, a return ticket and the new online traveller declaration.

How many days can a Kenyan stay in South Africa?

Up to 90 days in a year under the visa exemption. The immigration officer writes your permitted stay on the entry stamp. Overstaying can lead to a ban from returning, so plan your return flight within the stamped date and talk to us if your plans change.

Is a yellow fever card required for South Africa from Kenya?

Yes. South Africa lists Kenya as a yellow fever risk country. Everyone over one year old arriving from Kenya must show a valid yellow fever certificate. Get vaccinated at least 10 days before you fly. The certificate is valid for life once issued.

What is the South Africa online traveller declaration?

It is a customs declaration that every traveller must submit online before entering or leaving South Africa, from 1 July 2026. You can use the SARS portal, the SATMS app or Scan to Declare QR codes. No fee is published and help is available at the airport.

How long should my passport be valid to visit South Africa?

Your passport should be valid for at least 30 days after the date you plan to leave South Africa. It also needs at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps. Renew early if you are close to either limit, because airlines check before boarding.

Can Kenyans work in South Africa without a visa?

No. The visa exemption is for visits such as tourism, family visits, business meetings and transit. Paid work, study and long stays need the right visa or permit from South Africa before you travel. Apply through the South African High Commission in Nairobi or its visa centre.
