Which group hikes from Nairobi suit beginners?
Ngong Hills and Ol Donyo Sabuk are the friendliest starts. Ngong is about an hour from the city centre. You can walk one or two of the seven peaks and turn back whenever you like. The full ridge takes up to six hours for strong walkers.
Ol Donyo Sabuk near Thika has a wide track to the summit through forest. Buffalo live in the park, so you walk with a ranger or guide. Both hikes work well for mixed groups where some people rarely exercise.
Which hikes are best for fit groups?
Mount Longonot is the classic test. The climb to the rim is steep and dusty, then the rim circuit adds a few more hours. Many Nairobi hikers do it as a monthly challenge.
Elephant Hill in the Aberdares is harder. It starts near Njabini, about 90 km from Nairobi. The trail climbs from around 2,600 to over 3,600 metres. Expect about 7 hours of walking with cold weather at the top. Sleeping Warrior above Lake Elementaita is shorter but steep, with flamingos on the lake below. Kijabe Hills sit in the middle, with forest, old railway tunnels and waterfalls.
- Easy to moderate: Ngong Hills, Ol Donyo Sabuk
- Moderate: Kijabe Hills
- Moderate to hard: Mount Longonot, Sleeping Warrior
- Hard: Elephant Hill
How much do group hikes from Nairobi cost?
Prices start from KES 3,000 per person for Ngong Hills and reach about KES 4,500 for Elephant Hill. The price covers transport, fees at citizen rates, guides, lunch, water and first aid.
Group size changes the price because the bus is shared. A 13 person group fits a 14 seater van. A 30 person group fills a 33 seater coach. For long trips like Sleeping Warrior and Kijabe, the coach works out cheaper per head.

What are the entry fees for popular hikes?
Under the KWS fees from October 2025, Mount Longonot and Ol Donyo Sabuk each cost KES 500 for East African citizens, KES 675 for residents and USD 50 for non residents. Ngong Hills Forest is managed by the Kenya Forest Service and charges citizens about KES 250.
Sleeping Warrior and Ugali Hills charge about KES 215 for citizens and residents and USD 22 for non residents, according to a recent hiking guide. Elephant Hill fees and any ranger escort are confirmed when you book. Our price already includes citizen fees.
Who books group hikes from Nairobi with us?
Chamas use a hike as their monthly meeting with a view. Churches and youth groups plan them as retreats. Running clubs use Longonot for hill training. Companies book hikes as cheap, healthy team days.
For office groups we add simple team challenges at the summit or a lunch venue after the walk. See our team building activities in Nairobi and our chama trip packages for longer trips.
How do you keep a large group safe?
We send one lead guide for about every 10 to 15 hikers and a back marker so nobody walks alone. The guide sets a pace the slowest person can hold. We carry a first aid kit and know where the nearest exit point is on each route.
Before the day, we share a packing list and ask about medical conditions. On the day, the guide gives a short briefing. Anyone who feels unwell turns back with a guide. On Longonot, the rim walk is optional, so slower hikers can rest at the top.
What should each hiker bring?
Good shoes matter most. Trail shoes or boots with grip beat new trainers every time. Bring at least 2 litres of water, a hat, sunscreen and a light rain jacket. Elephant Hill needs warm layers and gloves.
Carry your ID card for park registration and some cash or Mpesa for snacks. A small backpack keeps your hands free on steep parts.
How do you book a group hike?
The group leader sends us a WhatsApp message with the hike, date, rough group size and pickup point. We reply with a written plan and a price per person. A deposit by Mpesa holds the bus and guides. Final numbers are due three days before the hike.
Authentic Adventures has run trips from Nairobi since 2015. Our office is at Pili Trade Centre on Mombasa Road. For single hikes on our public calendar, see Ngong Hills hike and Mount Longonot hike.

Questions people ask
What is the easiest group hike near Nairobi?
Ngong Hills is the easiest for most groups. It is about an hour from the city, the paths are clear and you can turn back after one or two peaks. Ol Donyo Sabuk is also gentle, with a wide track to the summit. Both suit groups with mixed fitness.
How much is a group hike from Nairobi?
Our private group hikes cost from KES 3,000 per person for Ngong Hills to about KES 4,500 for Elephant Hill. Prices include transport, citizen fees, guides, packed lunch, water and first aid. The bigger your group, the lower the transport cost per person on longer routes.
What is the minimum group size?
Our group prices are built for 13 or more hikers in a 14 seater van. Smaller groups can still book a private hike in a 7 seater van, at a higher price per person. Solo hikers and couples can join our public hiking calendar instead.
How long does the Mount Longonot hike take?
Most groups reach the crater rim in 1.5 to 2 hours. Walking the full rim adds about 2 to 3 hours. With the drive, plan a full day: leave Nairobi at 6 am and return by about 6 pm. Fit groups can do the rim. Others can rest at the viewpoint.
Do we need a guide for Ngong Hills?
A guide is strongly advised for groups. The ridge has several paths and weather can change fast. A guide also keeps the group together and knows the safe exit points. Our price includes guides, so your group leader can enjoy the hike too.
Can we combine a hike with team building?
Yes. Many companies pair Ngong Hills or Longonot with team games and a late lunch. We can add facilitators, a venue with a garden and a nyama choma lunch. Tell us your group size and budget and we send a full plan.
Sources we checked: KWS park fees from October 2025; Ngong Hills Forest Reserve fees and trail; Sleeping Warrior and Ugali Hills entrance fee; Elephant Hill route notes; Kajiado and Ngong fees; Authentic Adventures van and coach hire rates. Rules and fees change, so we confirm them again when you book.
Ready when you are. Send your dates and group size. We reply with a clear price and a plan you can change.
