Ol Donyo Sabuk Day Hike
Ol Donyo Sabuk National Park is a hidden gem just 65 km northeast of Nairobi, centred on a 2,145-metre hill (the Maasai name means “big mountain”). The park protects montane forest rich with buffalo, colobus monkeys, bushbuck, and over 45 bird species. The summit trail winds through dense forest before opening to sweeping views of the Athi Plains and, on clear days, Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro.
The Trail
- Distance: ~8 km round trip
- Duration: 3-4 hours
- Difficulty: moderate, with a steady uphill climb
- Summit: Macmillan Library — burial site of Sir William Northrup Macmillan
Wildlife
The park is home to a significant buffalo population — a KWS ranger is mandatory for all hikes. Black-and-white colobus monkeys are commonly seen in the forest canopy. Leopards are present but rarely spotted.
