Who gets the gorilla permit East African residents rate
East African citizens qualify for the lowest price. That includes Kenyans, Ugandans, Tanzanians, Rwandans, Burundians and South Sudanese passport holders. You show your passport or national document at the park office.
Foreign residents need a valid work permit or residence pass from a partner state. Bring the original, because the rangers check it before the briefing. If you are unsure which tier applies, send us a photo and we tell you.
How much is a Uganda safari package for East Africans
A 4 day trek from Kampala with 4 travellers sharing starts at about KES 62,000 per person for citizens. A 5 day version with a savanna stop is about KES 78,000.
For foreign residents the same trips cost about KES 130,000 and KES 146,000. Compare these with our visitor price for the 4 day Uganda gorilla trek, which is much higher because the permit costs far more.

Getting from Nairobi to Bwindi
Most Kenyan guests take a bus from Nairobi to Kampala, about 12 to 14 hours, then drive on to Bwindi. The bus costs around KES 4,500 each way. Flights from Nairobi to Entebbe are faster but cost more.
You can also fly from Entebbe to a Bwindi airstrip if you want to save a day. This raises the price. Our gorilla trekking from Nairobi page shows the options side by side.
Uganda or Rwanda for East Africans
Uganda gives East Africans the better price, since the permit is a few thousand shillings. Rwanda also offers a discount to East African citizens and residents, but the permit still costs far more than the Uganda rate.
Rwanda is smaller, so the trek starts close to the airport and the roads are smooth. Read our Uganda vs Rwanda gorilla guide for the main differences. For a gorilla permit East African residents prefer Uganda on price. We confirm the current Rwanda discount when you ask.
Best time for a gorilla trek
Gorillas live in forest and are there all year. Trails are easier in the dry months, June to September and December to February. The rainy months, April, May and November, are muddier but cheaper.
A gorilla permit East African residents buy is already low, so the low season saving matters less to you than to visitors. Pick the dates that suit your leave and book early for school holidays.
What the trek is like
Groups are limited to 8 people a day per gorilla family. A ranger leads you through steep forest and trackers go ahead to find the family. The trek can last 1 to 8 hours.
You spend one hour with the gorillas, keeping about 7 metres away. You must be at least 15 years old. If you have a cold or flu, you cannot trek, to protect the gorillas. A gorilla permit East African residents book is a firm date, so plan with care.
Porters, clothing and fitness
Hire a porter if you can. It costs about USD 15 to 20, helps a local family and makes the climb easier. Wear long trousers, sturdy boots, gaiters and gloves.
Bring a rain jacket, a hat and insect repellent. The forest is damp and steep. You do not need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable walking uphill for a few hours. See our Uganda gorilla trekking cost page for visitor details.
Documents and health rules
East African citizens do not need a visa for Uganda. Foreign residents may need one, so we check the rule for your passport when you book. Uganda asks for a yellow fever certificate, so bring your yellow card.
Read the Kenya vaccinations and malaria guide and talk to your doctor about malaria tablets. A gorilla permit East African residents hold is tied to your name, so the passport must match.
A sample budget for 4 friends
Four Kenyan friends book the 4 day trek at KES 62,000 each. The group total is KES 248,000. Add the Nairobi to Kampala bus at KES 9,000 each, which is KES 36,000 and pocket money of about KES 8,000 each.
That brings the whole gorilla permit East African residents trip to about KES 316,000, or KES 79,000 per person. A visitor on the same dates pays more than that for the permit alone. The difference is what makes this trip so attractive.
Things to do around Bwindi
Do not rush back after the trek. The Batwa community walk shows how forest people lived. A visit to Lake Bunyonyi, with its calm water and many islands, makes a lovely end to the trip.
You can also add a short stop at Lake Mburo or Queen Elizabeth National Park for a game drive. These extras lift the price a little. They also turn a gorilla permit East African residents book into a proper holiday.
Safety on the long road
The drive from Kampala to Bwindi is long, so start early and take breaks. We use experienced drivers who know the roads and the weather. Seat belts and sensible speeds matter more than a fast arrival.
Keep valuables in a daybag, carry some cash in small notes and charge your phone at lunch. Our driver guide stays with you for the whole trip and our team is on WhatsApp at +254 720 731957 if plans change.
Rwanda and the 3 day options
Short on time? Our 3 day Uganda gorilla trekking via Kigali and 3 day Rwanda gorilla trekking pages show quick visitor versions. East African citizens can ask us for the local rate on any of them.
Flights to Kigali and Entebbe leave from Nairobi daily, so a long weekend is possible. The permit is the only fixed cost that is far lower for you, which makes Uganda the logical first choice.
