Our Diani family holiday packages are built around what parents really need. Short transfers, a shallow beach, a pool the kids will not want to leave and food that fussy eaters will touch. Diani has all of that on one long white beach south of Mombasa.
We price every package for a typical family of four. Two adults and two children aged 3 to 11. You get the SGR from Nairobi, a private van to your hotel and three nights by the sea. Bigger families and grandparents are welcome. We simply adjust the rooms.
If you prefer the north coast, compare our Mombasa family holiday packages in Nyali and Bamburi. Diani is quieter and the beach is wider. Mombasa is closer to the SGR and has more day trips nearby.

Day by day plan
- Day 1
Nairobi to Diani by SGR
Board the morning Madaraka Express at Nairobi Terminus. Kids love the big windows. You may see animals as the train crosses Tsavo. You reach Mombasa Terminus at Miritini in the early afternoon. Our driver meets you and drives you south to Diani, which takes about 1.5 to 2 hours depending on the route and the Likoni ferry or the bypass. Check in, swim and have an early dinner.
- Day 2
Beach and pool day
Keep the first full day simple. Go to the beach at low tide when the water is calm and shallow and rock pools appear. Look for crabs, starfish and small fish with the kids. Rest by the pool in the heat of the afternoon. In the evening take a short walk along the sand while the sun goes down.
- Day 3
Monkeys and a family day out
Visit Colobus Conservation in Diani to learn about the black and white colobus monkeys that live along the beach road. It takes about an hour and suits small children. Older kids may prefer a half day at Shimba Hills to see sable antelope and elephants, or a dhow trip to Wasini with dolphins. We arrange whichever fits your children's ages.
- Day 4
Diani to Nairobi
Enjoy a last swim and breakfast. Check out by about 10am. Our driver takes you back to Mombasa Terminus for the afternoon train to Nairobi. You arrive in the evening, tired, sandy and happy. If you want to stay longer, add nights at the same rate and take a later train.

What do Diani family holiday packages include?
Each package covers the train, the road transfer and your hotel. You choose the board. Bed and breakfast keeps the price down and lets you eat out. All inclusive suits families who want no bills and snacks on tap. For December, see our Diani Christmas and New Year packages.
We include transfers because they are the hardest part to arrange yourself. Getting a family with luggage from Miritini to Diani by taxi and ferry is tiring. A private van with a known driver takes that stress away.
Which Diani hotels are best for families?
Pick a hotel with a big pool, a shallow beach in front and family rooms. Diani Reef Beach Resort is good value and right on the sand. Swahili Beach Resort is newer with large pools and room to run. Neptune Village Beach Resort is all inclusive, which helps when kids want juice every hour.
Larger resorts such as Leopard Beach Resort list a kids club. Clubs and their age limits change, so ask us which hotels run one on your dates. Our full guide to Diani Beach explains the different parts of the beach.
- Diani Reef Beach Resort: good value, bed and breakfast from KES 10,700 per adult sharing
- Swahili Beach Resort: modern five star, bed and breakfast from KES 15,400 per adult sharing
- Neptune Village Beach Resort: all inclusive, about USD 256 per room for two adults
- Leopard Beach Resort: larger resort with a kids club listed, rates on request
How much do Diani family holiday packages cost?
A family of four pays from KES 138,000 for 3 nights bed and breakfast with SGR and transfers. That is about KES 34,500 per person. All inclusive starts at about KES 198,000 per family.
The SGR is the best value part. Children aged 3 to 11 pay half fare and under threes ride free on a parent's lap. Flights from Nairobi to Ukunda airstrip save about four hours each way but usually add KES 10,000 to 15,000 per person each way, confirmed when you book.

How do you get to Diani with kids?
Take the morning SGR from Nairobi and let our van meet you at Mombasa Terminus. The train takes about 5 to 6 hours. The road to Diani then takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.
Pack snacks, a tablet and a jacket for the cold train air conditioning. Book SGR tickets early in school holidays. They sell out weeks ahead. Our SGR Nairobi to Mombasa guide explains classes and booking.
What can kids do in Diani?
Most children are happy with the beach and the pool. Low tide is the magic time. The sea pulls back and leaves warm pools full of small sea life.
For a day out, Colobus Conservation is short and gentle. Older kids enjoy the dhow trip to Wasini and Kisite Marine Park, where dolphins are often seen. Kisite charges KES 500 per citizen adult and KES 250 per child under the 2025 KWS fee list.
- Rock pooling at low tide
- Colobus monkey walk
- Glass bottom boat or snorkelling for older kids
- Shimba Hills half day safari
- Wasini dhow and dolphin trip
- Camel rides on the beach
When should families visit Diani?
Most families travel in the April, August and December school holidays. Those weeks cost more and book out early. If your children are not yet in school, go between late April and June or in September to November for lower rates.
April and May are the wettest months on the coast. Rain usually comes in short heavy bursts with sun in between. January and February are hot and dry with the calmest sea.
Is Diani safe for children?
Yes, with the usual beach care. Swim near the hotel at mid to low tide and watch for sea urchins on the rocks. Water shoes help. Use strong sunscreen and hats, because the coast sun burns fast.
Diani is in a malaria area. Use repellent in the evening and sleep under nets or in air conditioned rooms. Talk to your doctor about antimalarials for children. Our vaccinations and malaria guide has more detail.
Can we pay for Diani family holiday packages in instalments?
Yes. Pay a deposit by Mpesa, bank or card to lock your dates. Then pay the balance in small amounts before you travel.
This is how many Nairobi parents plan the December trip. Start paying in August and the holiday is fully paid by November. Read how it works on our lipa mdogo mdogo page.

Questions people ask
How much is a Diani holiday for a family of four?
With us, a family of two adults and two children aged 3 to 11 pays from KES 138,000 for 3 nights bed and breakfast at Diani Reef, with return SGR economy tickets and private transfers. All inclusive at Neptune Village costs about KES 198,000. Festive dates cost more.
Do children pay on the SGR?
Children under 3 travel free if they sit on a parent's lap. Children aged 3 to 11 pay half the adult fare. Economy is KES 1,500 one way for adults, so a child pays KES 750. Children aged 12 and above pay the full fare. Carry birth certificates in case you are asked.
Which Diani hotels have kids clubs?
Larger resorts are more likely to run one. Leopard Beach Resort lists a kids club, for example. Clubs, opening hours and age limits change by season, so we confirm this for your dates before you pay. Smaller boutique hotels usually do not have one.
How far is Diani from the SGR station?
Diani is about 1.5 to 2 hours by road from Mombasa Terminus at Miritini. The time depends on traffic and whether you use the Dongo Kundu bypass or the Likoni ferry. Our driver picks the faster route on the day.
Is all inclusive worth it for families?
Usually yes if your children eat and drink often. Snacks, juices and lunches add up fast at hotel prices. Bed and breakfast suits families who like to eat out and explore. Compare both options in our price table and choose what fits your style.
What is the best age for a Diani family holiday?
Any age works, but ages 4 to 12 get the most out of it. They can swim, rock pool and enjoy day trips. Babies are fine too. Ask for a cot and a ground floor room when you book.
