What is the Lord Egerton Castle entrance fee in 2026?
A Kenyan adult pays about KES 150 to 250. A resident adult pays about KES 450 to 500 and a non resident adult about USD 12 to 15. Students pay less and the rate drops for each level of school.
Why a range? The castle does not publish its fees online. A 2023 gate list showed KES 150 for Kenyan adults. A later list showed KES 250. A 2025 news report still quoted KES 150. So expect a figure in that band and carry a little extra.
Children in nursery school pay the lowest rate, from about KES 50. University students pay a little less than adults when they show a student ID.
How do you pay at the castle?
You pay at the gate office when you arrive. No advance booking is needed for a normal visit. Have Mpesa ready and carry some cash as a backup, since phone network around Ngata can be slow.
School groups and big tour groups should call ahead. The castle often has several school buses on weekdays during term. A guide is assigned to each group.
What does the Lord Egerton Castle entrance fee include?
Your ticket includes a guided walk through the castle and its grounds. The guide tells the love story behind the building and takes you through the main rooms.
Inside you see the ballroom, the library, the reading room, the master bedroom, the children's room, the kitchen and the old photography room. Lord Egerton imported British oak panelling and Italian green marble for the fireplaces.
The grounds are big enough for a picnic and lots of photos. A professional photo session is a separate charge.

Who built the castle and why?
Maurice Egerton, the 4th Baron Egerton of Tatton, built it. He was an English aristocrat who settled in Njoro and gave land that later became Egerton University.
Local legend says he built a smaller house first for a woman he wanted to marry. She turned him down and called it a chicken house. So he started a far bigger castle in 1938 with English architect Albert Brown. Work paused during the Second World War and the castle was finished in the early 1950s.
She never came. He never married and he banned women from his land, the guides say. The castle was gazetted as a national monument on 25 March 1996.
Opening hours and how long to stay
The castle opens every day. Published hours run from 7am or 8am to 5pm, with a lunch break from 1pm to 2pm. Arrive before noon or after 2pm so you do not wait for the guide.
Plan one to two hours. The guided tour takes about 45 minutes and the rest is photos and a walk in the gardens.
How do you get to Lord Egerton Castle?
The castle is in the Ngata area, about 10 to 14 km from Nakuru town on the way to Njoro. By car it takes about 20 to 30 minutes from Nakuru.
By public transport, take a Ngata or Njoro matatu from Nakuru town and ask to drop at the Ngata gate. A boda boda covers the last stretch to the castle.
From Nairobi the drive is about three hours. That is why most people visit on a Nakuru day trip or a weekend in the Rift Valley, rather than as a trip on its own.
Can you hold a photo shoot or wedding at the castle?
Yes. The castle is one of the most popular photo spots in the Rift Valley for weddings, graduations and portraits. A photo session has been charged at about KES 5,000 on top of entry.
For a wedding or event on the grounds, the castle hires out space from about KES 10,000 to KES 50,000 depending on size. Call the castle office early, as Saturdays in December and August fill fast.

Is the Lord Egerton Castle entrance fee worth it?
Yes. For the price of a soda you get a guided tour of one of the few real castles in East Africa and a story people remember. It is a strong add on to any Nakuru or Naivasha trip.
Compare it with the KWS fee at Lake Nakuru National Park, which is KES 1,500 for a citizen adult. Our Lake Nakuru entrance fee guide has the full list.
What else can you do near the castle?
Lake Nakuru National Park is about 30 minutes away and is the main reason most visitors come. Menengai Crater and the Hyrax Hill prehistoric site are also near Nakuru town.

Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Lord Egerton Castle?
Kenyan adults pay about KES 150 to 250 and residents about KES 450 to 500. Non residents pay about USD 12 to 15. Students and children pay less, from about KES 50 for nursery pupils. The castle sets its own fees and posts them at the gate, so confirm the exact figure on the day.
Is Lord Egerton Castle open on weekends?
Yes. The castle opens every day of the week, including weekends and most public holidays. Hours run from the morning to 5pm with a lunch break from 1pm to 2pm. Weekends bring wedding photo groups, so come early if you want quiet rooms and clear photos.
Do I need to book before visiting?
No. Individuals and families can walk in and pay at the gate. School trips, large groups, photo shoots and events should call ahead so a guide is ready and the space is free. If you come with us on a Nakuru trip, we handle the timing for you.
Can I take photos inside the castle?
Phone photos for personal use are usually fine during your tour. Professional photographers with cameras and crew pay a separate session fee of about KES 5,000. Ask the gate office before you set up lights or drones. Drones in particular need clear permission because the castle sits on university land.
How far is the castle from Lake Nakuru National Park?
The castle is about 10 to 14 km from Nakuru town. The main gate of Lake Nakuru National Park is close to town, so the drive between the two takes about 30 minutes. You can see the park in the morning and the castle in the afternoon on one day.
Who owns Lord Egerton Castle today?
The castle belongs to Egerton University, the institution that grew from land Lord Egerton gave for an agricultural school. The university runs it as a museum and tourist site. It is also a gazetted national monument. The ARC Hotel on the university campus offers rooms if you want to stay nearby.
