Day by day plan

  1. Day 1

    Nairobi to Lake Naivasha

You leave Nairobi at 8 am and drive about 90 minutes to Lake Naivasha, stopping at the Rift Valley viewpoint. After lunch you take a boat ride among hippos and fish eagles. Your guide can add Crescent Island for a walk among giraffe and zebra. You sleep by the lake, with the evening to relax, swim or watch birds from the garden.

  2. Day 2

Lake Nakuru and on to the Mara

Early you drive an hour to Lake Nakuru National Park for a morning game drive. You look for rhino, Rothschild giraffe and flamingos along the shore. After lunch you continue to the Masai Mara, about 5 hours. You arrive at camp for sunset, with time for a hot shower and a dinner under the stars.

  3. Day 3

Full day in the Masai Mara

A full day of game drives from first light. Your guide tracks lion prides, cheetah on the plains and elephants near the Mara River. You picnic on the plains or return to camp for lunch. Optional balloon flights start at dawn, and your guide can also arrange a bush lunch in the reserve.

  4. Day 4

Mara morning and back to Nairobi

One more early drive, then breakfast and the road to Nairobi. The drive takes 5 to 6 hours with a lunch stop. You sleep at a Nairobi hotel with a hot shower, a proper bed and time to repack.

  5. Day 5

    Nairobi to Amboseli

The drive to Amboseli takes 4 to 5 hours. You reach camp for lunch and head out on an afternoon game drive. Elephants wade through the swamps and Kilimanjaro often shows at dusk. Sundowners are by the camp fire, and a short briefing from your guide previews tomorrow.

  6. Day 6

    Full day in Amboseli

You leave at dawn for the best Kilimanjaro views, before cloud builds. The morning drive covers the open plains and the swamps. After lunch you visit Observation Hill for a view across the park. A late drive follows at about 4 pm, when elephants walk to the swamps in long lines.

  7. Day 7

    Amboseli to Tsavo West

A short morning drive in Amboseli, then you travel about 3 hours to Tsavo West. You arrive by afternoon for a game drive among baobabs and volcanic hills. Mzima Springs and the Shetani lava flow are the day’s highlights.

  8. Day 8

    Tsavo West to Tsavo East

You visit Mzima Springs in the morning and drive 3 hours to Tsavo East. In the afternoon you look for the famous red elephants, lion and buffalo along the Galana River. You sleep in a lodge or camp with a waterhole.

  9. Day 9

Tsavo East and back to Nairobi

A final dawn game drive, breakfast, then the drive to Nairobi. It takes 6 to 7 hours by road. You arrive in the evening. If you prefer, we drop you at Voi for the SGR train or at Mombasa for a beach extension.

Why Choose a 9 Day Kenya Safari

Many visitors pick one park and wish they had seen more. A 9 day Kenya safari fixes that. You cover five landscapes: lake, plain, swamp, savannah and bushland.

The pace is steady, not rushed. Most days have one long drive and two game drives. Compare it with our shorter 7 day Kenya safari and the longer 10 day Kenya safari to see which length fits your calendar.

If Tsavo is not a priority, our 8 day Mara, Nakuru, Amboseli and Tsavo safari trims a night and the price. If you want a shorter classic, the 6 day Kenya safari keeps the best three parks.

Choose the 9 day Kenya safari when you have the time and want the widest mix of wildlife and scenery, with no repeat landscapes.

How Much Does a 9 Day Kenya Safari Cost?

Prices start at USD 2,500 per person for six people sharing a budget tier in low season. Two people in mid range pay about USD 4,000 each, and two people in luxury about USD 4,820.

Park fees make up about a quarter of the cost. Our safari cost and prices page explains the other parts.

The Park Fees Behind the Price

A 9 day Kenya safari pays fees in several parks. Rates below are per adult per day for non residents, so confirm the current figures at booking.

  • Masai Mara: USD 100 a day Jan to Jun, USD 200 a day Jul to Dec
  • Lake Nakuru and Amboseli: about USD 90 a day each
  • Tsavo East and Tsavo West: about USD 80 a day each
  • Children 9 to 17 pay about half, and under 9s are free in most parks
9 day Kenya safari: what you will see

Best Time for a 9 Day Kenya Safari

Jul to Oct is the dry season and the migration window in the Mara, with the highest prices. Jan to Mar is dry, warm and quiet, which makes it a favourite for photography.

The long rains in Apr and May turn roads muddy in Tsavo and the Mara, so we usually avoid this plan then. Read the Kenya safari month by month guide to compare weather and prices.

Accommodation on This Route

Budget means simple tented camps and small lodges with full meals. Mid range means large tents or lodge rooms with private bathrooms, often with a pool.

Luxury means upscale tented camps in the Mara and Amboseli with stronger service. In Tsavo, luxury options are fewer, so we place you in the best available lodge. Our guide to safari accommodation types explains each style.

Road Conditions, Fly Options and a Beach Extension

The longest days are Day 2, Day 4 and Day 9, at 5 to 7 hours of driving each. The roads to Narok and Amboseli are mostly good, but the Mara approach is rough.

Your guide builds in stops and keeps the vehicle comfortable. If you hate long drives, we can fly one leg, such as Mara to Nairobi, for a supplement. See Kenya fly in safaris for flight pricing.

A 9 day Kenya safari pairs well with a few nights on the coast after Tsavo. We can end the trip in Mombasa or Diani, with an SGR train ride from Voi or Mtito Andei.

Our Diani Beach holiday packages show hotel options, and the Kenya safari and beach holiday bundles the two.

Who This Trip Suits

It suits first timers with nine days to spare, repeat visitors who want new parks, and families with children over 7 who can handle long drives. Photographers like the variety of light and landscape.

  • Couples who want a classic first Kenya trip
  • Families travelling in school holidays
  • Friends splitting one vehicle between four to six
  • Not ideal for travellers who dislike early starts

Wildlife Highlights Park by Park

Each stop on a 9 day Kenya safari offers something the others do not. That variety is the whole point of the route, and it keeps game drives fresh from day to day.

  • Lake Nakuru: black and white rhino, flamingos in good years, tall Rothschild giraffe
  • Masai Mara: lion prides, cheetah, leopard, hippo pools and wildebeest from Jul to Oct
  • Amboseli: big tusker elephants, hundreds of birds and Kilimanjaro views
  • Tsavo West: Mzima Springs hippos, lava fields and rhino in the sanctuary
  • Tsavo East: red dust elephants, lion, buffalo and the Galana River

Health, Visas, Tips and Photography

You need a Kenya ETA before you fly, and most visitors apply online a week or two ahead. All five parks are malaria zones, so speak to your doctor about tablets.

Travel insurance is not optional on a 9 day Kenya safari. We recommend cover that includes evacuation. See our Kenya travel insurance and AMREF Flying Doctors guide for options.

Tip your guide about USD 15 to 20 per day and camp staff a smaller shared amount. Our Kenya safari tipping guide gives the numbers.

For photographers, the long middle of a 9 day Kenya safari brings varied light. Mara and Amboseli mornings are best for golden light, while Tsavo’s red soil gives striking contrast at dusk. Bring a spare battery and a bean bag for the vehicle roof.

Booking a 9 Day Kenya Safari

Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and group size. We send a written quote with three tiers, usually within a few hours.

For Jul to Oct we suggest booking four to six months ahead. Browse our all itineraries page if you want to compare lengths.

How to book your 9 day Kenya safari

Booking your 9 day Kenya safari with us takes about five minutes of your time. The rest is our job. Here is exactly what happens, step by step, so there are no surprises along the way.

  1. Send your dates. Message us on WhatsApp with your travel dates, how many people are coming and the ages of any children. Tell us if you have a budget in mind. We plan with it, not around it.
  2. Get a written quote. We reply with a clear price per person, what it includes and what it does not. No hidden park fees and no vague extras. If a cheaper camp or a shorter route makes more sense, we say so.
  3. Tweak it until it fits. Change a camp, add a night or swap a park. Ask as many questions as you like. Changes cost nothing until you confirm.
  4. Confirm with a deposit. A deposit holds your vehicle, guide and rooms. You get a written confirmation with every detail and the date the balance is due.
  5. Travel day. Your driver guide meets you at your hotel or the airport with a name board. You have their number and ours for the whole trip.

What every trip with us includes

Every 9 day Kenya safari plan we put together comes with the basics done properly. You ride in a safari vehicle with a pop up roof, with a professional driver guide who knows the parks. Water is in the cooler box, and park fees are sorted in advance so you do not stand in a queue at the gate.

We also stay reachable. If something changes on the road, a flat tyre, a closed route or a sudden storm, we sort it and keep you posted on WhatsApp.

Paying safely

We share payment details in writing only, and every payment gets a receipt. The payment options and the balance date sit on your written quote, so nothing is left to memory or a phone call.

Why book with a Nairobi team

We live here. We drive these roads all year, we know which camps are honest about their photos, and we know when a park is too busy to enjoy. That local knowledge is what turns a good 9 day Kenya safari into a great one. Our Google rating sits at 5.0 from 46 reviews, and we plan to keep it that way.

Ready when you are. Send us a message and we will put a plan together for you shortly.

Questions people ask

Is 9 days enough for a Kenya safari?

Yes. A 9 day Kenya safari covers five parks and lakes without feeling rushed, with two nights in the Mara and two in Amboseli. If you want to add the coast or more game drive time, 10 to 12 days is a better fit.

How much is a 9 day Kenya safari per person?

Guide prices start at USD 2,500 per person for six people in the budget tier in low season. Mid range runs about USD 3,200 to 4,000 and luxury about USD 3,860 to 4,820. Peak season adds about USD 350 to 600.

Which parks does the 9 day Kenya safari include?

Lake Naivasha, Lake Nakuru, the Masai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo West and Tsavo East. We can drop Naivasha or Nakuru for a more relaxed plan, or swap Tsavo for a coast stay if you prefer.

Can I do the 9 day Kenya safari in a private vehicle?

Yes, this is a private trip. You have your own pop up roof 4×4 and driver guide for the whole route. Group joining dates exist for some routes, see our Kenya group joining safaris page.

Is the 9 day Kenya safari suitable for children?

Yes, from about age 7. Long drive days can tire younger children, so we plan breaks. Park fees for ages 9 to 17 are about half price, and children under 9 are free in most parks.

What is the best season for a 9 day Kenya safari?

Jul to Oct for the Mara migration and dry roads, Jan to Mar for quiet parks. Nov and Dec bring short rains and green views. Apr and May are wettest, and some camps close for part of that time.

Official information: Kenya Wildlife Service park fees.
