Day by day plan
- Day 1
Nairobi to the Maasai Mara
Early pickup from your Nairobi hotel or the airport. The drive west runs through the Rift Valley and takes about 5 to 6 hours with a stop for tea and views. You reach camp by lunch, then head out for an afternoon game drive as the light softens. Overnight in the Mara.
- Day 2
Full day Maasai Mara
Two game drives, one early and one late, with a rest at camp through the heat of midday. Your guide reads the grass and the radio chatter to find lion, cheetah and the resident herds. If the wildebeest are in the Mara during your dates, a river crossing is possible. Overnight in the Mara.
- Day 3
Second full day Maasai Mara
A second full day gives real depth over a rushed single visit. Many guests use this day for an optional hot air balloon flight at dawn or a Maasai village visit in the afternoon break, alongside the standard morning and evening game drives. Overnight in the Mara.
- Day 4
Maasai Mara to Nairobi
A final early morning game drive, then breakfast and the drive back to Nairobi, arriving by mid afternoon in time for an evening flight or a night in the city. This closes out your 4 day Masai Mara safari with one last good look at the plains.

Is 4 days in the Maasai Mara worth it
For most travellers, yes. A single overnight or 2 day trip gives you one real game drive day, which is a gamble on the weather, the wildlife and your guide’s luck all lining up at once. A 4 day Masai Mara safari gives you 2 full days, which meaningfully improves your odds of a strong sighting.
It also lets you slow down. You are not rushing from vehicle to bed to vehicle again and there is room for an optional activity like a balloon flight or a village visit without cutting into your last game drive or feeling like you are packing too much into too little time.
Difference between a 3 day and a 4 day Masai Mara safari
A 3 day trip usually gives you 1 full day and 2 half days, arrival afternoon plus departure morning. A 4 day Masai Mara safari adds a genuine second full day, which is 2 extra game drives, not just a longer stay at camp.
The price difference is smaller than you might expect, since the extra day mostly adds camp and park fee cost rather than vehicle and driver cost, which is already fixed for the trip regardless of how many nights you stay.
How much does a 4 day Masai Mara safari cost
A 4 day Masai Mara safari starts from about USD 750 per person sharing in a group of 6 at budget camps in low season, rising to around USD 2,450 for luxury at 2 people sharing. Season and camp tier move the price most.
Compare this against our 3 day Maasai Mara group joining safari if budget matters more than a second full day, or our 5 day Maasai Mara and Amboseli safari if you want to add a second park.

What’s included in the price
Every tier includes your driver guide, vehicle, park fees, full board accommodation and all listed game drives. What is not included, a balloon flight, a village visit, tips and drinks, is listed clearly in the excludes section so there are no surprises at camp.
Adding a hot air balloon or Masai village visit
A dawn hot air balloon flight over the plains, usually followed by a champagne breakfast, is the most popular add on for a 4 day Masai Mara safari, since the extra day leaves room for it without cutting a game drive. See our Maasai Mara hot air balloon safari page for full pricing.
A Maasai village visit, usually an hour or two, gives you a look at traditional homes, dress and dance, run directly by the community for a set fee per person. Both activities are optional and quoted separately from the base package and both fit naturally into the free time a second full day provides.
Reserve or conservancy on a 4 day trip
This itinerary is built around the main Maasai Mara National Reserve, which gives you the highest concentration of predators and the best odds during migration season. Splitting your stay between the reserve and a private conservancy adds walking safaris and off road driving, but usually costs more per night than staying inside the reserve for the full trip.
See our Kenya luxury safaris page if a conservancy split appeals more than staying inside the reserve for the full 4 days.
Is a 4 day Masai Mara safari good for the migration
Yes, particularly between July and October when the wildebeest herds are typically in the Mara. Two full days meaningfully improve your chances of catching a river crossing, since the herd can sit at the water’s edge for hours or days before committing.
Read our great migration calendar for month by month herd positions before you pick your dates.
Private safari or group joining
Most guests take this as a private 4 day Masai Mara safari for full control of the pace and stops. A shared group joining option exists on set departure dates for a lower price if budget matters more than flexibility.
Ask us on WhatsApp which dates have group joining seats open and we will lay out both options side by side so you can compare cost against flexibility before deciding.
Best season for a 4 day Masai Mara safari
January to June is the cheaper half of the year, since the Mara ticket sits at USD 100 rather than USD 200 and the short rains in April and May green up the plains without seriously disrupting game drives.
July to October is peak season, with the wildebeest migration likely in the Mara and the highest concentration of predators following the herds. Camps book up faster in this window, so a 4 day Masai Mara safari for these months is worth confirming well ahead of your travel dates.
Who this itinerary suits
This length suits first time visitors who want a genuine safari experience without committing a full week and repeat visitors who already know the Mara and want a focused, single park trip rather than a longer multi park route.
It also suits photographers, since 2 full days gives enough time to return to a good sighting for better light rather than moving on immediately. If you have more time, our 7 day Kenya safari adds Nakuru and Amboseli to the same trip, giving you two more parks without losing the depth this itinerary already offers.
What to pack and health notes
Pack neutral colours, a warm layer for early morning game drives, sunscreen and a hat. The Mara highlands can be cool at dawn even in the warmer months, so layers that come off easily through the day work best on both game drive mornings.
Malaria prevention is recommended for this route and a Kenya ETA is required for most visitors before arrival. See our packing checklist and our vaccinations and malaria guide for a fuller list before you travel.
How to book your 4 day Masai Mara safari
Booking your 4 day Masai Mara safari with us takes about five minutes of your time. The rest is our job. Here is exactly what happens, step by step, so there are no surprises along the way.
- Send your dates. Message us on WhatsApp with your travel dates, how many people are coming and the ages of any children. Tell us if you have a budget in mind. We plan with it, not around it.
- Get a written quote. We reply with a clear price per person, what it includes and what it does not. No hidden park fees and no vague extras. If a cheaper camp or a shorter route makes more sense, we say so.
- Tweak it until it fits. Change a camp, add a night or swap a park. Ask as many questions as you like. Changes cost nothing until you confirm.
- Confirm with a deposit. A deposit holds your vehicle, guide and rooms. You get a written confirmation with every detail and the date the balance is due.
- Travel day. Your driver guide meets you at your hotel or the airport with a name board. You have their number and ours for the whole trip.
What every trip with us includes
Every 4 day Masai Mara safari plan we put together comes with the basics done properly. You ride in a safari vehicle with a pop up roof, with a professional driver guide who knows the parks. Water is in the cooler box and park fees are sorted in advance so you do not stand in a queue at the gate.
We also stay reachable. If something changes on the road, a flat tyre, a closed route or a sudden storm, we sort it and keep you posted on WhatsApp.
Paying safely
We share payment details in writing only and every payment gets a receipt. The payment options and the balance date sit on your written quote, so nothing is left to memory or a phone call.
Why book with a Nairobi team
We live here. We drive these roads all year, we know which camps are honest about their photos and we know when a park is too busy to enjoy. That local knowledge is what turns a good 4 day Masai Mara safari into a great one. Our Google rating sits at 5.0 from 46 reviews and we plan to keep it that way.

Questions people ask
Is 4 days in the Maasai Mara worth it?
For most travellers, yes. A 4 day Masai Mara safari gives you 2 full game drive days rather than the single rushed day you get on a shorter trip, which meaningfully improves your odds of a strong sighting and lets you slow the pace down.
What is the difference between a 3 day and a 4 day Mara safari?
A 3 day trip usually gives 1 full day and 2 half days. A 4 day Masai Mara safari adds a genuine second full day, worth 2 extra game drives, for a price difference smaller than the extra day might suggest since vehicle and driver costs are already fixed.
How much does a 4 day Maasai Mara safari cost?
From about USD 750 per person sharing in a group of 6 at budget camps in low season, up to around USD 2,450 for luxury at 2 people sharing. The price includes park fees, a private driver guide, full board accommodation and all game drives.
Can I add a hot air balloon or Maasai village visit?
Yes, both are popular add ons for a 4 day Masai Mara safari, priced separately from the base package. A dawn balloon flight runs about USD 450 to 550 per person and a village visit is usually USD 20 to 30 per person.
Can I split my stay between the reserve and a conservancy?
Yes. This itinerary is built around the main reserve for the strongest predator numbers, but we can split your 4 day Masai Mara safari between the reserve and a private conservancy on request, usually at a higher nightly cost for the conservancy nights than for the reserve nights.
What’s included in the 4 day Masai Mara safari price?
Your private driver guide, vehicle, park fees, full board accommodation and all listed game drives. Flights, tips, drinks, a balloon flight and a village visit are priced separately and shown clearly in the excludes list, so the final total is never a surprise.
Is a 4 day Masai Mara safari good for the migration?
Yes, especially July to October when the herds are typically in the Mara. Two full days meaningfully improve your odds of a river crossing over a shorter trip, since crossings are never guaranteed on any single day and often take patience to witness.
