Wasini Island Dolphin Tour — Dolphins, Snorkeling & Seafood from Mombasa or Diani
The Wasini Island dolphin tour is the most popular excursion on the Kenya coast — and for good reason. You spend a full day on the Indian Ocean watching wild dolphins, snorkeling over pristine coral reefs in Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park, feasting on fresh seafood on Wasini Island and exploring a centuries-old Swahili village. It is the single best day trip you can take from Mombasa or Diani Beach.

Full Itinerary
06:00 — Pickup from your Mombasa hotel (Diani pickup at 07:30). Drive south along the scenic coastal road past Ukunda and Msambweni to Shimoni — the departure point. Your guide shares stories about the coastline, the slave caves and local Digo culture along the way.
09:00 — Board a traditional dhow at Shimoni Jetty. The crew handles all marine park paperwork and distributes snorkeling equipment. As the boat heads into the open ocean, keep your eyes on the water — this is prime dolphin territory.
09:30 — Dolphin watching. Bottlenose and spinner dolphins are resident in these waters year-round. The captain follows them at a respectful distance while you photograph, film or simply watch. Sighting rates are above 90% — though as with all wildlife, encounters are natural and never guaranteed.
10:30 — Snorkeling in Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park. The boat anchors over a coral reef inside Kenya’s most pristine marine park. Slip into warm, crystal-clear water to see parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, moray eels, sea turtles and, if you are lucky, reef sharks. Snorkeling gear is provided; the crew assists beginners.
12:30 — Wasini Island. The dhow pulls up to this tiny island where a seafood lunch awaits at a locally owned restaurant. Fresh crab, prawns, octopus, grilled fish, coconut rice and tropical fruits — all cooked in traditional Swahili style and served under the shade of ancient baobab trees.
14:00 — Village walk. A local guide takes you through the mangrove boardwalk, past coral gardens formed by centuries of tidal erosion, and into the village. You learn about Swahili architecture, boat-building traditions and the island’s history as a waypoint on the East African coast.
15:00 — Dhow back to Shimoni, then drive to your hotel. Drop-off in Diani by 16:30, Mombasa by 18:00.
