Day by day plan
- Day 1
Arrive in Nairobi
Your 12 day Kenya birding tour begins when you land at Jomo Kenyatta Airport, where your driver guide meets you and takes you to your hotel. If you arrive early, you can walk in Karura Forest for your first birds, such as sunbirds and turacos. You meet your guide, review your target list and rest. Dinner is at the hotel. Tomorrow you leave early for the Rift Valley.
- Day 2
Nairobi to Lake Naivasha
You drive about 2 hours to Lake Naivasha, with a stop at the Rift Valley viewpoint for raptors. After lunch you take a boat ride among hippos, pelicans, cormorants, jacanas and fish eagles. Your guide knows where kingfishers perch. You return to your lodge for supper and a night walk in the garden for owls.
- Day 3
Hell’s Gate and Naivasha
You visit Hell’s Gate National Park in the morning, where cliffs hold Verreaux’s eagles and lammergeiers. You walk or cycle along the gorge. After lunch you return to the lake or walk on Crescent Island among waterbirds and zebra. The evening light is soft and warm. You sleep a second night at the same lodge.
- Day 4
Naivasha to Lake Nakuru
After breakfast you drive about 1.5 hours to Lake Nakuru National Park. The lake often holds flamingos, pelicans and many water birds, depending on the water. The surrounding woodland has hornbills, barbets and raptors. You take an afternoon drive with a rhino and giraffe backdrop. You sleep near the park gate.
- Day 5
Nakuru to Bogoria and Baringo
On day five of your 12 day Kenya birding tour you drive about 2 hours north to Lake Bogoria, famous for hot springs and flamingos. Mornings and evenings give the best activity in this dry country, so we plan hot springs and the lake in the cooler hours. You walk to the shore and watch thousands of birds in the steam. Greater kudu also graze nearby. After lunch you drive about 1.5 hours to Lake Baringo and check in to your lodge. A short afternoon walk reveals hornbills and weavers.
- Day 6
Full day at Lake Baringo
You take a dawn boat ride on the lake among fish eagles, herons and kingfishers. Goliath herons stand at the edge. After breakfast you walk the cliffs for Verreaux’s eagle owl, nightjars and Jackson’s hornbills. Your guide knows the nests. In the evening you take a night walk for owls and nightjars. You return to the lodge for dinner and a rest.
- Day 7
Baringo to Lake Elementaita
You drive about 4 hours south through Nakuru to Lake Elementaita. The lake sits in a soda basin and attracts flamingos and pelicans in the right season. You check in to your lodge for lunch and a rest. In the late afternoon you walk the shoreline with your guide. You sleep in a cottage with a view of the lake.
- Day 8
Elementaita to the Masai Mara
You drive about 5 hours to the Mara through Narok, with a lunch stop. The final stretch is rough, so your guide drives slowly. You reach camp for a late lunch and head out on a game drive at about 4 pm. Raptors, vultures and bustards are easy to see on the open grass. You return to camp for supper by the fire.
- Day 9
Full day in the Mara
You leave at first light for lions, cheetahs and birds of the plains. Secretary birds walk through the grass and lilac breasted rollers perch on every bush. Ground hornbills roam in family groups. After breakfast you drive again to the river for hippos, crocodiles and water birds. You return to camp for sundowners.
- Day 10
Second day in the Mara
Today you follow the birds. Your guide takes you to woodland for barbets and to termite mounds for pigmy falcons and starlings. You may see Rüppell’s vultures at a kill. Elephants, buffalo and giraffe fill the quiet hours. You stay out until late afternoon. Dinner is at the camp, with owls calling from the trees.
- Day 11
Mara to Nairobi
You take a short final game drive and eat breakfast at camp. After checkout you drive about 5 to 6 hours to Nairobi. You reach your hotel in the late afternoon. You sort your bird list and photos over dinner. Many guests count more than 300 species by now, with a good guide and the right season.
- Day 12
Depart Nairobi
You have a slow breakfast and a last chance to buy books or crafts. Your guide drives you to the airport for your flight home. If you have extra time, ask us about a half day in Nairobi National Park or a visit to the Giraffe Centre. We can also extend your trip to Kakamega Forest or the coast.

You can expect 300 or more species with a good guide and the right season, including flamingos, pelicans, eagles, hornbills, kingfishers and owls. Mammals add bonus sightings. See our Kenya birding tours page for shorter plans.

The Rift Valley Lakes
On a 12 day Kenya birding tour Lake Naivasha is fresh and holds fish eagles, jacanas, kingfishers and cormorants. Lake Nakuru and Lake Bogoria are soda lakes and draw flamingos when the algae bloom. Lake Baringo is fresh again, with hundreds of species around its shore.
Our Lake Naivasha boat ride and Lake Nakuru day trip pages show what each stop offers. Bogoria and Baringo also feature on our Lake Bogoria and Lake Baringo birding safari.

Cliffs, Gorges and Hell’s Gate
On a 12 day Kenya birding tour Hell’s Gate has red cliffs and a deep gorge that suit eagles and vultures. Lammergeiers, Verreaux’s eagles and Rüppell’s vultures nest on the rock. Your guide walks you along the base for close views.
The park is small and easy to walk. Read our Hell’s Gate and Lake Naivasha day trip page for the activities on offer.
The Masai Mara for Birders
On a 12 day Kenya birding tour the Mara is known for big cats, but it is also a great bird park. More than 450 species have been recorded. Secretary birds, ground hornbills, lilac breasted rollers, bustards and many raptors live on the plains.
Three nights give you time to find the more difficult species. Our 3 day Masai Mara safari from Nairobi shows how a Mara stay works.
Best Months for a 12 day Kenya birding tour
For a 12 day Kenya birding tour Nov to Apr brings migratory birds from Europe and Asia, so you see more species. Dry months, Jan to Mar and Jun to Oct, make access easier. Nov and Dec bring short rains and green views. Apr and May are wet and slow.
Flamingo numbers change from year to year with water levels, so we cannot promise them. Ask us for current reports when you plan. See our best time to visit the Masai Mara guide for Mara timing.
Lodges and Camps
We pick lodges with gardens for a 12 day Kenya birding tour, because many birds live in lodge grounds. The tier you pick sets the comfort. See our guide to lodge versus tented camp versus camping for what each style feels like.
- Standard: simple lodges and tented camps with hot water and good gardens
- Mid range: larger rooms or tents with private bathrooms and a pool
- Luxury: spacious suites or conservancy camps with a pool and private guiding
Gear and Field Tips
On a 12 day Kenya birding tour bring 8 by 42 binoculars and a field guide such as Birds of East Africa. A 200 to 500 mm lens helps with photos. A small notebook or phone app helps you log species.
Wear neutral clothes, a hat and sturdy shoes. Mornings are cool and afternoons are hot. Our Kenya safari packing checklist lists the rest. Baringo and the Mara are malaria areas, so read the Kenya vaccinations and malaria guide.

Questions people ask
How many species can I see on a 12 day Kenya birding tour?
With a good guide in the right season you can see 300 or more species. Birds change with habitat, so the route mixes lakes, cliffs, woodland and plains. A specialist bird guide improves your list.
How much does a 12 day Kenya birding tour cost?
Our guide price starts at USD 3,660 per person for six people on a standard plan in low season. Mid range runs about USD 4,300 to 5,110 and luxury about USD 4,950 to 5,970. Fees are included.
Do I need a specialist bird guide?
A specialist guide is not required on a 12 day Kenya birding tour, but it helps a lot for rare and shy species. Your driver guide knows the common birds. A specialist knows calls, nests and rare species. We can add one for about USD 50 to 60 per person per day.
When is the best time for a 12 day Kenya birding tour?
Nov to Apr brings migratory birds and the dry months are easier for access. The wet months, Apr and May, are slow. Flamingo numbers vary with water levels, so check reports before you travel.
Will I see flamingos?
Often, but not always. Flamingos move between Nakuru, Bogoria and Elementaita depending on the algae and water. We choose the lake with the best numbers on the day. No tour can promise a particular count.
Can I add more habitats?
Yes. You can add Kakamega Forest for rainforest birds, Mount Kenya forests or the coast at Arabuko Sokoke. Tell us what you want to see and we quote an extension. A flight can save a day on long legs.
Is this tour suitable for non birders?
Yes, a 12 day Kenya birding tour suits travellers who like nature and wildlife. The route includes big game in Nakuru and the Mara, so partners who are not birders still enjoy it. Our Kenya family safaris page lists tips for mixed interests.
