Day by day plan
- Day 1
Nairobi to Ol Pejeta
Your 10 day Kenya photography safari starts when your guide collects you in Nairobi at about 7 am. You drive about 4 hours north through Thika and Nyeri, with Mount Kenya on view on a clear morning. You reach Ol Pejeta for lunch and a gear check in the vehicle. At about 3:30 pm you start your first game drive. Rhinos, giraffe and plains game fill the open grass. You return at dusk to download your first images.
- Day 2
Full day at Ol Pejeta
On day two of your 10 day Kenya photography safari you leave at first light, when lions and cheetahs are still active. Rhinos are the star here and the light on their backs at dawn is lovely. After breakfast you rest and sort images. The afternoon drive runs to sunset and you may add a night drive for leopards and genets. Night photography needs a fast lens and a steady hand.
- Day 3
Ol Pejeta to Samburu
After a final sunrise drive you drive about 3 to 4 hours north through Nanyuki and Isiolo to Samburu. The land turns dry and red. You reach your lodge for lunch and rest during the hot hours. At about 4 pm you head out along the Ewaso Ng’iro River. Elephants cross the water and leopards wake as the shadows lengthen.
- Day 4
Full day in Samburu
On a 10 day Kenya photography safari Samburu gives you species that you do not see in the south, such as Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk and Somali ostrich. You work the river banks at dawn and the open plains in the afternoon. The red earth and blue sky make strong backgrounds. Your guide waits for animals to pose in good light. You return at dusk to sort and back up your images.
- Day 5
Samburu to Lake Nakuru
You leave early and drive about 7 hours south to Lake Nakuru through Nanyuki and Nyahururu. It is a long day, but you stop for photos at the equator and over the Rift Valley. You reach your lodge in the late afternoon. If time allows, you take a short drive for golden light on the lake shore. Rothschild giraffes and white rhinos feed nearby.
- Day 6
Lake Nakuru to Lake Naivasha
You take a sunrise drive in Lake Nakuru National Park, with pelicans, flamingos and buffalo on the shore. After breakfast you drive about 2 hours to Lake Naivasha. In the afternoon you take a boat out among hippos, fish eagles and papyrus. You can also walk on Crescent Island among zebra and giraffe. The light over the water is soft and warm at the end of the day.
- Day 7
Naivasha to the Masai Mara
You drive about 5 hours to the Mara through Mai Mahiu and Narok. The final stretch is rough, so your guide drives slowly to protect your gear. You reach camp for a late lunch. At 4 pm you start the first game drive on the Mara plains. Lions, elephants and giraffe pose in the afternoon light. You return to camp for supper by the fire.
- Day 8
Full day in the Mara
This is the first of two full Mara days on your 10 day Kenya photography safari. You leave at dawn for cats on the plains. Cheetahs often hunt in the early light and lions are active until about 9 am. You take breakfast on the plains or at camp and return for the afternoon light. Your guide positions the vehicle for sun angle and background. You return at dusk for dinner and a campfire.
- Day 9
Second full day in the Mara
Today you chase what you missed. Your guide may take you to the Mara River for hippos and crocodiles, or to a quieter corner for leopards. Between Jul and Oct you may find the migration herds crossing. You take a picnic lunch and stay out to catch the late light. Sunset over the plains is your last big shot of the trip.
- Day 10
Last drive and back to Nairobi
You wake early for a final game drive and a bush breakfast if the weather allows. After checkout you drive about 5 to 6 hours to Nairobi with a lunch stop at Narok. You reach the city in the late afternoon. Your guide drops you at your hotel or at the airport. Book flights after 7 pm. Back up your images twice before you fly.

What Makes a 10 day Kenya photography safari Different
A standard safari is built around the day, while a 10 day Kenya photography safari is built around the light. A photography safari is built around the light. We plan starts, stops and meals to give you the best two hours after sunrise and before sunset.
Your guide knows how to position a vehicle so that the sun sits behind you and the background is clean. He also waits. Many animals look their best after the first five minutes, once they relax. A 10 day Kenya photography safari gives you that time.
How Much Is a 10 day Kenya photography safari?
Our guide prices start at USD 3,100 per person for six photographers sharing a standard plan in low season. Two people on a mid range plan pay about USD 5,200 each. Two people on a luxury plan pay about USD 6,450.
The price covers photographer vehicles, nine nights on full board, all park and conservancy fees and the Naivasha boat ride. A group of six uses two vehicles with two or three photographers each and the price reflects that.
Our Kenya photography safaris page shows shorter trips. For wider rates visit Kenya safari packages and prices.
Five Habitats in Ten Days
On a 10 day Kenya photography safari Samburu is dry and red, with unique species. Ol Pejeta is open grass with rhinos. Lake Nakuru has soda water and flamingos and Naivasha has papyrus and hippos. The Mara has the classic plains and big cats.
This variety gives you very different backgrounds, colours and light. You build a portfolio, not a repeat. It also spreads the risk. If one park is quiet, the next one delivers.

Gear That Works on Safari
For a 10 day Kenya photography safari a long lens matters most. A 100 to 400 mm or 200 to 600 mm lens covers most sightings. A 70 to 200 mm lens suits close animals and landscapes. A wide lens helps for acacia and sky.
Bring two camera bodies if you can, so that you do not change lenses in the dust. Bring plenty of memory cards, spare batteries and a power bank. Our vehicles have a 12 volt outlet for charging. Drones are banned in parks without a permit, so leave yours at home.
Vehicle Set Up and Etiquette
On a 10 day Kenya photography safari each vehicle has a pop up roof and a window for each photographer. We use bean bags on the roof and window frames and we add a mount on request. No more than three photographers share a vehicle, so you do not fight for a position.
Guides follow park rules and keep a safe distance from animals. We never bait or harass wildlife. Stay seated, keep your voice low and switch off your flash.
Best Months for a 10 day Kenya photography safari
For a 10 day Kenya photography safari Jul to Oct brings the migration and dramatic river scenes in the Mara, but it also brings high fees and more vehicles. Jan to Mar is dry and clear with good big cat light. Nov and Dec bring green plains, newborn animals and dramatic skies.
Apr and May are wet and cheaper, but light can be flat and roads are slow. See our Great Migration calendar and best time to visit the Masai Mara guides.
Lodges, Camps and Download Time
On a 10 day Kenya photography safari evenings are for sorting images, so we pick camps with power and a dining space with decent light. The tier you pick sets the comfort. See our guide to lodge versus tented camp versus camping for what each style feels like.
- Standard: simple lodges and tented camps with hot water and power
- Mid range: larger rooms or tents, private bathrooms and sometimes Wi Fi
- Luxury: spacious suites or conservancy camps with a pool and guided access
Dust, Heat and Gear Care
Dust is the biggest enemy on a 10 day Kenya photography safari. Keep lenses covered between sightings and change lenses inside the vehicle with the roof down. Use a blower and a soft cloth. Silica gel packs protect against humidity.
Heat in Samburu can reach 35 degrees Celsius at noon. Keep gear out of direct sun in the vehicle and give batteries a rest. Our Kenya safari packing checklist lists clothing and the rest of your kit.

Questions people ask
How many photographers share a vehicle on a 10 day Kenya photography safari?
On a 10 day Kenya photography safari two or three photographers share a vehicle, so everyone has a window. A group of six uses two vehicles with two guides. We plan seating so that no one is stuck in the middle.
How much does a 10 day Kenya photography safari cost?
Our guide price starts at USD 3,100 per person for six photographers on a standard plan in low season. Mid range runs about USD 4,030 to 5,200 and luxury about USD 4,970 to 6,450. Fees are included.
What is the best lens for a safari?
A 100 to 400 mm or 200 to 600 mm lens covers most wildlife. Add a 70 to 200 mm lens for close subjects and a wide angle for landscapes. A second body saves you from changing lenses in dust.
Can I use a tripod?
A tripod is awkward in a vehicle. We use bean bags on the window frame and roof, which work better. A monopod with a gimbal head helps with long lenses. Tell us your set up and we adjust the vehicle.
Do you provide a photography guide?
On a 10 day Kenya photography safari your driver guide knows how to position for light and background. If you want a specialist photography mentor, we can arrange one for an extra fee. Tell us when you book and we quote it.
Is a 10 day Kenya photography safari good for beginners?
Yes. You need no special skill and your guide helps with positioning. Bring a camera with a long lens and learn the basics before you go. A 10 day Kenya photography safari rewards patience more than expertise.
What if the weather is bad?
Rain and cloud change the light but can make strong images, such as storm skies over the plains. Your guide adapts the plan. Waterproof covers for your gear are essential, especially in Nov and Apr.
