Most visitors land in Nairobi with one or two spare days and assume there is nothing to do but wait. There is quite a lot, and almost all of it is within an hour of the city.

Nairobi National Park
The only national park inside a capital city anywhere in the world. Lion, rhino, buffalo, giraffe and zebra with office towers on the horizon. Go at dawn. By ten in the morning the animals have gone into the shade and the light is flat.
Black rhino are the reason to come. The park is one of Kenya’s most successful rhino sanctuaries and sightings are genuinely common.
The elephant orphanage
The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust opens to the public for one hour a day, usually late morning. Orphaned elephant calves are fed and they play in the mud in front of you. It is booked ahead and it fills up, so tell us the day and we will arrange the slot.
Lake Naivasha and Hells Gate
Ninety minutes from Nairobi. A boat ride among hippos, then a cycle or a walk through Hells Gate gorge, which is one of the few Kenyan parks where you can leave the vehicle. It makes a full day and it suits people who are restless sitting in a car.
