Day by day plan
- Day 1
Nairobi to Lake Naivasha
On the first day of your 4 day Naivasha Masai Mara safari you leave Nairobi at about 8 am and drive 90 km to Naivasha, stopping at the Rift Valley viewpoint on the way. After lunch you take a boat ride on the lake to see hippos, fish eagles and papyrus shores. Later you choose a walk on Crescent Island among zebra and giraffe or a ride through Hell’s Gate National Park. You sleep at a lakeside lodge and eat supper with a view of the water.
- Day 2
Naivasha to the Masai Mara
After breakfast you drive about 4 to 5 hours to the Mara through Mai Mahiu and Narok. You stop for lunch at Narok. The last stretch is rough, so your guide drives slowly. You check in at your camp in the afternoon and head out on a game drive at about 4 pm. The light is soft and the animals are active. Supper follows by the fire.
- Day 3
Full day in the Masai Mara
You leave at first light for the best hours of the day. Lions rest in the grass, cheetahs scan the plains and elephants cross the road. After a picnic breakfast or camp lunch you drive again through the Talek area, the Mara River banks and the open plains. Your guide stops at the hippo pools for photos. You return to camp for sundowners and dinner.
- Day 4
Last drive and back to Nairobi
You wake early for the last game drive of your 4 day Naivasha Masai Mara safari, then return to camp for breakfast and checkout. The drive back takes about 5 to 6 hours with a lunch stop at Narok. You reach Nairobi in the late afternoon, in time for an evening flight if you plan it that way. Your guide drops you at your hotel or at the airport.

Why Add Naivasha to the Mara
The direct drive from Nairobi to the Mara takes 5 to 6 hours and leaves you tired on arrival. A 4 day Naivasha Masai Mara safari solves that. A night at Naivasha splits the trip into two shorter days. You also see a different Kenya, with water, wetlands and open walking country.
A 4 day Naivasha Masai Mara safari suits travellers who like variety. You get hippos on Day 1, big cats on Day 3 and no rush in between. If you want a plain Mara trip with more time on the plains, our 4 day Masai Mara safari is the better fit.
A 4 day Naivasha Masai Mara safari suits couples, families and friends who want a gentler start. It works well for older travellers who find a 6 hour road day tiring. It also suits first time visitors who want lake birds as well as lions.
It does not suit travellers who want the maximum time in the Mara. For that choice, look at our 5 day Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha safari.
How Much Is a 4 Day Naivasha Masai Mara Safari?
Our guide prices start at USD 980 per person for six people on a budget plan in low season. Two people on a mid range plan pay about USD 1,530 each. Two people on a luxury plan pay about USD 1,860.
The price of a 4 day Naivasha Masai Mara safari covers the vehicle, guide, three nights on full board, the boat ride, the Naivasha park entry and the Mara reserve fees. Non resident adults pay USD 100 a day to enter the Mara from Jan to Jun and USD 200 from Jul to Dec.
Three Mara tickets are usual on this plan. See the Maasai Mara entry fees guide for the full breakdown. For wider rates visit Maasai Mara safari packages and prices.
What You Do at Lake Naivasha
Naivasha is a freshwater lake with hippos, fish eagles and more than 400 bird species. A boat ride takes about an hour and gets you close to the hippos without going into the water. Your guide keeps a safe distance.
On Crescent Island you walk among zebra, giraffe and waterbuck with no predators. Hell’s Gate National Park offers cliffs, a gorge and the chance to cycle. Our Hell’s Gate and Lake Naivasha day trip shows the activities in detail. Our Lake Naivasha boat ride page explains the boat and island options.

A Sample Day at Lake Naivasha
Your afternoon at the lake is relaxed. After lunch you walk down to the jetty and board a small motor boat. The driver cuts the engine near a hippo pod and you float among them. Fish eagles dive for fish on cue when a guide throws one.
You land on Crescent Island and walk for about 90 minutes. Giraffe stand in the open and zebra graze a few metres away. Your guide tells you which trees give shade and which birds are nesting.
This slow, walking pace is what a 4 day Naivasha Masai Mara safari adds. The Mara is about vehicles and distance. Naivasha is about quiet and detail.
Naivasha Hotels and Mara Camps
You sleep at a lakeside lodge or garden hotel at Naivasha, then at a camp or lodge in the Mara. The tier you pick for your 4 day Naivasha Masai Mara safari sets the style of both nights.
See our guide to lodge versus tented camp versus camping for what each style feels like.
- Budget: simple lakeside rooms and a Mara camp with small tents or rooms
- Mid range: garden lodge at Naivasha and a tented camp in the Mara with private bathrooms
- Luxury: lake view lodge and a Mara lodge with a pool and spacious suites
Best Time for a 4 Day Naivasha Masai Mara Safari
For a 4 day Naivasha Masai Mara safari Jan to Mar is hot and dry, with clear skies and quiet Mara roads. Jul to Oct brings the Great Migration and higher fees. Nov and Dec bring short rains and green plains. Apr and May are wet with the lowest prices.
Naivasha works all year because the lake stays full. Walking is best in the dry months. Our best time to visit the Masai Mara guide gives a month by month view.
Road Trip Details
On a 4 day Naivasha Masai Mara safari the first leg to Naivasha is easy tarmac. The road from Naivasha through Mai Mahiu to Narok is also paved but has trucks and slow sections. After Narok the road to the Mara gate is rough, so expect a slow and bumpy final hour.
Your driver guide knows every bend and starts early to avoid traffic. If you prefer a shorter road day, a flight from Wilson Airport takes about 45 minutes. See our Maasai Mara fly in safari page for options and rates.
Wildlife You Can Expect
On a 4 day Naivasha Masai Mara safari you see hippos at Naivasha, colobus monkeys, giraffe and a long list of water birds. Crescent Island is the easiest place in Kenya to walk with giraffe and zebra.
In the Mara you can expect lions, elephants, buffalo, zebra, topi and hyenas on most drives. Cheetahs and leopards need patience. Read the guide to the Big Five in Kenya for tips on where to look.
Health and Packing
Naivasha sits at about 1,900 m, so nights are cool on a 4 day Naivasha Masai Mara safari. Bring a fleece and a rain jacket. The Mara is a malaria area, so see your doctor and pack repellent. Take travel sickness tablets for the Narok road.
Our Kenya safari packing checklist lists the rest and the Kenya vaccinations and malaria guide covers health advice.

Why book with a Nairobi team
We live here. We drive these roads all year, we know which camps are honest about their photos and we know when a park is too busy to enjoy. That local knowledge is what turns a good 4 day Naivasha Masai Mara safari into a great one. Our Google rating sits at 5.0 from 46 reviews and we plan to keep it that way.

Questions people ask
Is a 4 day Naivasha Masai Mara safari worth it over a plain Mara trip?
Yes if you like variety. You split the long drive, see hippos and walk among giraffe at Naivasha. You spend two nights in the Mara, the same as a 3 day trip. If you want more Mara time choose the plain 4 day plan.
How much does a 4 day Naivasha Masai Mara safari cost?
Our guide price starts at USD 980 per person for six people on a budget plan in low season. Mid range runs about USD 1,230 to 1,530 and luxury about USD 1,470 to 1,860. Fees are included.
How far is Naivasha from Nairobi?
About 90 km, or 1.5 to 2 hours by road. The route crosses the Rift Valley escarpment with a viewpoint. Traffic can add time on weekends. Your guide leaves early to give you a full afternoon at the lake.
Can we walk among animals at Naivasha?
Yes, on Crescent Island and in Hell’s Gate during the 4 day Naivasha Masai Mara safari. Crescent Island has no predators, so you walk with zebra, giraffe and antelope. Hell’s Gate has buffalo and leopards but few big predators and guides lead you on foot or bike.
How long is the drive from Naivasha to the Mara?
Plan for 4 to 5 hours with a lunch stop at Narok. The final hour on the dirt road is slow. A flight from Wilson Airport takes about 45 minutes if you want to skip the road.
Is a 4 day Naivasha Masai Mara safari suitable for children?
Yes, from about age 5. Children enjoy the boat ride and the Crescent Island walk. Mara fees for children 9 to 17 are USD 50 per ticket and 8 and under are free. See our Kenya family safaris page for tips.
Can I add a balloon ride in the Mara?
Yes, on Day 3. A balloon ride costs about USD 450 to 550 per person with a bush breakfast. Book early because seats sell out in peak months. We confirm availability before you pay a deposit.
