Day by day plan

  1. Day 1

    Diani to Tsavo West

You leave Diani at about 6 am, cross the Likoni ferry and drive north west on the Mombasa road. The drive to Tsavo West takes about five hours with a lunch stop at Voi. You enter the park in the afternoon and visit Mzima Springs, where hippos and crocodiles live in clear pools. You sleep near the black lava fields.

  2. Day 2

    Tsavo West to Amboseli

After a short morning game drive you leave for Amboseli. The drive takes about three and a half hours on rough tracks, with views of the Chyulu Hills. You reach your lodge for lunch and rest, then take an afternoon game drive. Elephants wade through the swamps and Kilimanjaro rises behind them. Your 5 day safari from Diani finds its star.

  3. Day 3

    Full day in Amboseli

You rise early because the mountain is clearest at dawn. Your guide drives to Observation Hill for the view and the herds below. You look for lion, cheetah, giraffe, buffalo and birds around the marsh. After lunch and a rest, you drive again until sunset.

  4. Day 4

    Amboseli to Tsavo East

You take a dawn game drive, then leave after breakfast for Tsavo East. The drive takes about five to six hours, with lunch on the way. You enter the park in the afternoon and settle at your lodge near the Galana River. An evening drive looks for lion, buffalo and gerenuk and the lodge waterhole puts on a show at night.

  5. Day 5

    Tsavo East back to Diani

You take a last early game drive, with a stop at Mudanda Rock or Lugard Falls. After breakfast you leave for the coast. The drive takes about four to five hours, with the Likoni ferry at the end. You reach Diani in the afternoon, with time for a swim before supper.

What a 5 day safari from Diani Really Gets You

A 5 day safari from Diani is a loop from the beach and back. You never go to Nairobi, you never fly and you see three of Kenya’s best parks. Your hotel luggage can stay at the coast.

It suits beach holidaymakers with a free week and a love of animals. For a shorter option, see our 3 day Tsavo East and Amboseli safari from Mombasa. For a longer one that ends in Nairobi, see our 4 day Mombasa, Tsavo and Amboseli Big Five safari.

How Much Is a 5 day safari from Diani?

Our guide prices start at USD 1,560 per person for six people sharing a budget lodge in low season. Two people in a mid range lodge pay about USD 2,030 each. Two people in a luxury lodge pay about USD 2,650 each.

The price covers your vehicle, guide, four nights on full board and the park fees. From 1 Oct 2025, KWS fees for non resident adults are about USD 90 a day in Amboseli and USD 80 a day in Tsavo. Confirm exact fees at booking.

See our Kenya national park entry fees guide for the fee table and the Kenya safari packages and prices page to compare trips.

Tsavo West and Mzima Springs

Tsavo West is the greener, more scenic half of Tsavo. Mzima Springs pours fresh water out of the Chyulu Hills and hippos and crocodiles live in the pools. An underwater viewing hide shows fish drifting by.

The Shetani lava flow and the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary are both nearby. See our Tsavo East and West safari for more on the two Tsavo parks.

5 day safari from Diani: what you will see

Amboseli: Elephants and Kilimanjaro

Amboseli is small and open and it is the best place in Kenya to photograph elephants with Kilimanjaro behind them. Swamps fed by mountain snow keep the grass green and the herds large.

You also see lion, cheetah, hyena, buffalo, wildebeest and many birds. Our 2 day Amboseli safari and our Amboseli National Park safari give more on the park.

Best Time for a 5 day safari from Diani

Jun to Oct and Jan to Feb are the driest months and the best for game viewing. Amboseli has clear skies and strong mountain views. Nov and Mar to May bring rain, green bush and fewer vehicles.

Apr and May are the wettest. Some tracks close and some lodges shut. Our Kenya safari month by month guide gives a month by month view and the Kenya public holidays and peak dates shows peak dates.

Lodge or Camp: What Each Tier Gets You

On a 5 day safari from Diani, every tier visits the same parks with the same guide. The difference is comfort and location.

Budget stays give you clean rooms or tents, hot water and plain meals. Mid range stays give you private bathrooms, a pool and a waterhole view. Luxury stays give you large rooms, a bar and top service, often inside the park.

  • Budget: simple rooms or tents, shared or basic facilities, full meals
  • Mid range: private bathrooms, pool, lounge, often a floodlit waterhole
  • Luxury: large suites, pool, bar and top service

What You Can Expect to See

Across three parks you can see elephant, buffalo, lion, giraffe, zebra, waterbuck, impala, hartebeest and dik dik. Tsavo adds gerenuk and lesser kudu. Amboseli adds big herds of wildebeest and flamingos in wet years.

Leopard and cheetah are possible in all three parks. On a 5 day safari from Diani, you rarely see the full Big Five, since rhino are shy. Our guide to the Big Five in Kenya and our Kenya safari animals guide explain what to expect, park by park.

Birders enjoy lilac breasted rollers, secretary birds, ostrich and many kinds of eagle.

Why Three Parks Beat One

Each park has its own scenery and its own wildlife mix. A 5 day safari from Diani gives you lava fields, swamps and red plains in one trip. You also get a different feel each day, so you never tire of the same view.

The trade off is more driving and fewer hours at each park. If you prefer depth, pick two parks and add a night. We shape the plan around how you like to travel.

Driving Time Made Simple

This is a driving trip. You spend about 20 hours in the vehicle over five days. The longest legs are Diani to Tsavo West and Amboseli to Tsavo East, at about five hours each.

Your guide stops for views, meals and toilets. If the road is too long for you, try our 2 day Tsavo East safari from Mombasa or the Maasai Mara safari from Mombasa and Diani, which fly part of the way.

Health, Packing and Comfort

The parks are hot and dusty, so bring a hat, sunscreen and a scarf. All three parks and the coast are malaria areas, so speak to your doctor about tablets and pack repellent.

Our Kenya safari packing checklist and our Kenya vaccinations and malaria guide cover the details. Leave swimwear and extra luggage at your beach hotel.

Beach Time Before and After

A 5 day safari from Diani works best with three or four beach nights on each side. You can book your hotel through our hotel booking in Kenya service, or ask us to plan the full stay.

See our Diani beach holiday packages page for hotel ideas and our Diani and Wasini Island dolphin trip for the Wasini dolphin day trip.

How to book your 5 day safari from Diani

Booking your 5 day safari from Diani with us takes about five minutes of your time. The rest is our job. Here is exactly what happens, step by step, so there are no surprises along the way.

  1. Send your dates. Message us on WhatsApp with your travel dates, how many people are coming and the ages of any children. Tell us if you have a budget in mind. We plan with it, not around it.
  2. Get a written quote. We reply with a clear price per person, what it includes and what it does not. No hidden park fees and no vague extras. If a cheaper camp or a shorter route makes more sense, we say so.
  3. Tweak it until it fits. Change a camp, add a night or swap a park. Ask as many questions as you like. Changes cost nothing until you confirm.
  4. Confirm with a deposit. A deposit holds your vehicle, guide and rooms. You get a written confirmation with every detail and the date the balance is due.
  5. Travel day. Your driver guide meets you at your hotel or the airport with a name board. You have their number and ours for the whole trip.

What every trip with us includes

Every 5 day safari from Diani plan we put together comes with the basics done properly. You ride in a safari vehicle with a pop up roof, with a professional driver guide who knows the parks. Water is in the cooler box and park fees are sorted in advance so you do not stand in a queue at the gate.

We also stay reachable. If something changes on the road, a flat tyre, a closed route or a sudden storm, we sort it and keep you posted on WhatsApp.

Paying safely

We share payment details in writing only and every payment gets a receipt. The payment options and the balance date sit on your written quote, so nothing is left to memory or a phone call.

Why book with a Nairobi team

We live here. We drive these roads all year, we know which camps are honest about their photos and we know when a park is too busy to enjoy. That local knowledge is what turns a good 5 day safari from Diani into a great one. Our Google rating sits at 5.0 from 46 reviews and we plan to keep it that way.

Ready when you are. Send us a message and we will put a plan together for you shortly.

Questions people ask

Is a 5 day safari from Diani too much driving?

It is a driving trip, with about 20 hours in the vehicle over five days. The roads are paved on the main legs and rough inside the parks. Your guide stops often. If you want less road time, a shorter Tsavo trip or a fly in safari may suit you better.

How much does a 5 day safari from Diani cost?

Our guide price starts at USD 1,560 per person for six people in a budget lodge in low season. Mid range runs about USD 1,890 to 2,030 and luxury about USD 2,120 to 2,650. Park fees are included. Peak season adds about USD 80 to 150.

Can I start a 5 day safari from Diani from Mombasa or Watamu?

Yes. We pick you up from Mombasa, Nyali, Bamburi or Mtwapa at no extra cost. From Watamu or Malindi, we add a small transfer fee, which we quote at booking. Diani guests start earlier because of the Likoni ferry.

Will I see Kilimanjaro on a 5 day safari from Diani?

Often, yes. The mountain is clearest at dawn and dusk and many days it hides behind cloud at midday. Your guide times the game drives so you are in the open at sunrise. Jun to Oct and Jan to Feb give the best chance.

When is the best time for a 5 day safari from Diani?

Jun to Oct and Jan to Feb are the driest and best for game viewing. Nov and Mar to May bring rain and green bush with fewer visitors. Apr and May are the wettest, with muddy tracks and lower prices.

Can I take a luggage break at my hotel?

Yes. Most coast hotels store luggage for free while you are on safari. Pack a small bag for the four nights, with a swimsuit left behind. We recommend soft bags because they fit better in the vehicle.

Is a 5 day safari from Diani suitable for children?

Yes, for children over 6. The days are long but varied and elephants are a big hit. Tell us ages at booking so we pick lodges with pools. See our Kenya family safaris for family ideas.
