Day by day plan
- Day 1
Nairobi to the Masai Mara
You leave Nairobi at about 6:30 am, drop into the Rift Valley and stop at the viewpoint above the escarpment. After Narok the road gets rough, so your guide takes it slowly. You reach your camp for a late lunch and head out on a first game drive at about 4 pm. The light is soft, the animals are active and supper follows by the fire.
- Day 2
Full day in the Masai Mara
Today is the main event. You leave at first light for the best hours of the day, when lions are still moving and cheetahs hunt. After breakfast or a packed lunch you keep driving, with a pause at the Mara River for hippos and crocodiles. Your guide works the plains, the Talek area and the riverbanks. You return to camp for sundowners and dinner.
- Day 3
Last game drive and back to Nairobi
You wake early for a short final game drive, then return to camp for breakfast and check out. The drive to Nairobi takes about 5 to 6 hours with a lunch stop at Narok or Mai Mahiu. You reach the city in the late afternoon, in time for an evening flight if you plan it that way. Your guide drops you at your hotel or at the airport.

What a 3 day Masai Mara safari Really Gets You
Two nights is the minimum that works for the Mara. The road takes most of Day 1 and Day 3, so your real game time is about one and a half days.
That is still enough to see the Big Five on a good run and many guests do. If you want more breathing room, our 4 day Maasai Mara safari adds a full extra day in the reserve for a modest step up in price.
How Much Is a 3 Day Masai Mara Safari from Nairobi?
Our guide prices start at USD 850 per person for six people sharing a budget camp in low season. Two people in a mid range tented camp pay about USD 1,310 each and two people in a luxury lodge pay about USD 1,580.
The price covers your vehicle, guide, two nights on full board and the reserve fees. For the wider picture see our Maasai Mara safari packages and prices page.
Non resident adults pay USD 100 a day from Jan to Jun and USD 200 a day from Jul to Dec. Children 9 to 17 pay USD 50 and children 8 and under are free.
A three day road trip usually uses two or three tickets, depending on your entry time. Confirm the exact count at booking. Our full breakdown sits in the Maasai Mara entry fees guide.
Budget Camp, Mid Range Camp or Luxury Lodge
The camp you pick changes comfort more than it changes what you see. All three tiers put you close to the same wildlife.
Camps inside the reserve save you the morning gate queue and let you start game drives at sunrise. Camps just outside the gate cost less but add 20 to 40 minutes each way.
On a short 3 day Masai Mara safari, that time counts. We tell you before booking which gate your camp sits on and we pick the camp that best fits the animals you hope to see.
- Budget camp: simple tents or small rooms, shared bathrooms in some, hot water and full meals
- Mid range camp: large tents with private bathrooms, a lounge, good food and often a river view
- Luxury lodge: spacious suites, a pool, a bar and extra comfort, usually with a short transfer to the plains

Best Time for a 3 Day Masai Mara Safari
Jul to Oct brings the Great Migration and the Mara River crossings, but also the highest fees and crowds. Jan to Mar is hot, quiet and good for big cats. Nov and Dec bring short rains, green plains and lots of newborn animals.
Apr and May are the wettest months, with the lowest prices and the fewest vehicles. See the best time to visit the Maasai Mara for a month by month view.
Road or Flight, Private or Group
The road trip suits travellers who like to see Kenya on the way. The drive passes the Rift Valley, Narok town and Maasai farmland and you save a lot of money against flying.
If time is tight, you can fly into the Mara from Wilson Airport in about 45 minutes. See our Maasai Mara fly in safari for fly in rates, or the Nairobi to Maasai Mara guide for road and flight costs.
This 3 day Masai Mara safari runs as a private trip. You have your own vehicle, set your own pace and choose when to leave camp. Groups of two to six share the vehicle cost, which is why the price drops as the group grows.
If you want to share a van with other travellers, our 3 day Maasai Mara group joining safari costs less per person with fixed departures.
What to Pack
Bring neutral clothes, a warm layer for cold mornings, a hat, sunscreen and binoculars. A power bank helps because the vehicle charge points are slow.
- Closed shoes, plus sandals for camp
- A light rain jacket for Nov to May trips
- Camera with a spare card and a dust cover
- Our full Kenya safari packing checklist covers the rest
What You Can Expect to See and Do
The Mara is Kenya’s best big cat country. Lions live in prides across the plains and are easy to find, often resting under a bush at midday. Cheetahs use the open grass near Talek and leopards hide along the riverine trees.
Elephants, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, topi, hippo and hyena are daily sights. On a 3 day Masai Mara safari between Jul and Oct, huge herds of wildebeest add to the show. Our guide to the Big Five in Kenya explains where each animal is easiest to spot.
On a 3 day Masai Mara safari, your day starts with tea or coffee at 6 am and a drive as the sun rises. Cats are most active early and the light is kind to photographers.
You return for breakfast at camp or take a bush breakfast on the plains. Midday is quiet, so many guests rest at camp. The afternoon drive runs until about 6 pm, when the park gates close for vehicles outside the conservancies.
Meeting the Maasai
Many camps sit beside Maasai land and a village visit is an easy add on. You see traditional dancing, a boma and a short talk about daily life. Expect to pay about USD 20 to 30 per person, paid directly at the village.
If culture is a big reason for your 3 day Masai Mara safari, our Maasai village day tour shows how we run these visits respectfully.
Health, Safety and Comfort
The Mara is a malaria area, so talk to your doctor about tablets and bring repellent. Camps provide nets and most have power in the evening.
The rough Narok road can be dusty and bumpy. Take any travel sickness tablets before you leave, since the first and last day of a 3 day Masai Mara safari are mostly road. Read our Kenya vaccinations and malaria guide for the details.

What every trip with us includes
Every 3 day Masai Mara safari plan we put together comes with the basics done properly. You ride in a safari vehicle with a pop up roof, with a professional driver guide who knows the parks. Water is in the cooler box and park fees are sorted in advance so you do not stand in a queue at the gate.
We also stay reachable. If something changes on the road, a flat tyre, a closed route or a sudden storm, we sort it and keep you posted on WhatsApp.
Paying safely
We share payment details in writing only and every payment gets a receipt. The payment options and the balance date sit on your written quote, so nothing is left to memory or a phone call.
Why book with a Nairobi team
We live here. We drive these roads all year, we know which camps are honest about their photos and we know when a park is too busy to enjoy. That local knowledge is what turns a good 3 day Masai Mara safari into a great one. Our Google rating sits at 5.0 from 46 reviews and we plan to keep it that way.

Questions people ask
Is a 3 day Masai Mara safari long enough?
Yes, for a first visit. You get two nights in the reserve and about one and a half days of game viewing. A 3 day Masai Mara safari usually delivers lion, elephant, buffalo and giraffe and often cheetah. Add a day if you want to chase leopard or the river crossings.
How much does a 3 day Masai Mara safari cost?
Our guide price starts at USD 850 per person for six people in a budget camp in low season. Mid range runs about USD 1,050 to 1,310 and luxury about USD 1,260 to 1,580. Mara fees are included and peak season adds about USD 100 to 200.
How long is the drive from Nairobi to the Mara?
Plan for 5 to 6 hours each way by road, with stops. The last stretch past Narok is rough, so the pace is slow. A flight takes about 45 minutes if you want to save time on a 3 day Masai Mara safari.
Can I see the Big Five on a 3 day Masai Mara safari?
Often, yes. The Mara holds lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and a growing rhino population. Rhino and leopard are the hardest to find. A skilled guide and a full game day give you the best chance.
When is the best time for a 3 day Masai Mara safari?
Jul to Oct for the Great Migration, Jan to Mar for quiet reserves and big cats and Nov to Dec for green landscapes. Apr and May are wet and cheaper. Fees double from July, so budget travellers often pick Jan to Jun.
Can I add a balloon ride to a 3 day Masai Mara safari?
Yes, on Day 2. A hot air balloon ride costs about USD 450 to 550 per person and includes a bush breakfast. Tell us when you book, because balloon seats sell out in peak months. Read more on our Maasai Mara hot air balloon safari page.
Is a private 3 day Masai Mara safari worth it over a group trip?
If you value your own schedule, yes. You pick the sightings, the start time and the photo stops. Groups of four to six get the private price down close to a shared van, so the gap is often small.
