Day by day plan

  1. Day 1

    Kigali to Musanze

A driver meets you at Kigali airport and takes you on a short city tour. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is a moving stop and takes about 2 hours. After lunch you drive about 2.5 hours north to Musanze. The road is smooth and passes terraced hills. You check in to your lodge near the park.

  2. Day 2

    Gorilla trekking

You meet your ranger at park headquarters in Kinigi at 7 am. A briefing assigns you to a gorilla family. Treks last 1 to 5 hours depending on where the gorillas are. You spend one hour with them, then walk back. You return to the lodge for lunch and a long rest.

  3. Day 3

Golden monkey trek and Twin Lakes

You walk about 2 to 3 hours to find the golden monkeys in the bamboo forest. They are playful and photogenic. In the afternoon you visit Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo, known as the Twin Lakes. A boat ride or a lakeside walk is optional. If you prefer, you can swap this for the Dian Fossey hike.

  4. Day 4

    Return to Kigali

You have breakfast and drive back to Kigali, about 2.5 hours. We drop you at the airport or your hotel in time for your flight. If your flight is late, you can add a visit to a craft market or the coffee shops in Kigali.

Why Choose a 4 Day Rwanda Gorilla Trek

A 4 day Rwanda gorilla trek is easy to plan. Kigali is well connected and the drive to Volcanoes National Park is short and smooth. You spend less time in the vehicle and more time with the gorillas.

Rwanda also runs its permit system very well. The park is organised and the guides are well trained. That makes it a good choice for first time trekkers.

For a Uganda version, see our Uganda gorilla trek 4 days.

How Much Is a 4 Day Rwanda Gorilla Trek?

For a 4 day Rwanda gorilla trek, our budget price starts at USD 2,390 per person for six people sharing. Four people pay about USD 2,450 each and two pay about USD 2,590 each. Mid range starts near USD 2,990 for two and luxury near USD 3,890 for two.

The gorilla permit of USD 1,500 makes up most of the cost. The golden monkey permit adds about USD 100. Competitors often quote 5 day trips from USD 4,500. See our Rwanda gorilla permit cost guide for the full breakdown.

The Rwanda Gorilla Permit

A Rwanda gorilla permit costs USD 1,500 per person for most travellers. East African citizens pay far less and residents of Rwanda have a special rate. Permits are tied to a date and a gorilla family.

We book your permit when you pay the deposit. Permits are not refundable once issued, so confirm your dates first. Eight people visit each family and each group gets one hour.

  • Gorilla permit: USD 1,500 per person
  • Golden monkey permit: about USD 100
  • Dian Fossey hike: about USD 75
  • Porter: about USD 20
4 day Rwanda gorilla trek: what you will see

The Golden Monkey Trek

Golden monkeys live in the bamboo forest on the volcano slopes. They are quick, cheeky and easy to photograph. A trek takes 2 to 3 hours and is gentler than a gorilla trek.

The permit costs about USD 100. It is a good add on if you want a second primate. Golden monkeys are endangered and the permit helps protect them.

Dian Fossey Hike or Twin Lakes?

The Dian Fossey hike climbs to the grave of the famous researcher and her gorilla friends. It takes 6 to 8 hours and is tough. It suits keen walkers and those who love the story behind the gorillas.

The Twin Lakes visit is easy and scenic. You can walk or take a boat. It suits anyone who wants a gentle afternoon. Tell us your choice at booking. Either way, the 4 day Rwanda gorilla trek keeps a good rhythm.

Fitness and What to Expect

On a 4 day Rwanda gorilla trek, treks can be steep and slippery. The altitude is about 2,500 to 3,500 metres, so you may be breathless. Porters carry your bag and help you with steep sections. A walking stick is provided.

The minimum age is 15. Anyone with a cold or flu will be refused to protect the gorillas. See our gorilla trekking from Nairobi page for tips.

Best Time for a 4 Day Rwanda Gorilla Trek

For a 4 day Rwanda gorilla trek, Jun to Sep and Dec to Feb are the driest months. Trails are easier and photos are clearer. Mar to May and Oct to Nov are rainy. Treks can be muddy, but permits are the same price.

Rain can come at any time on the volcano. Pack a rain jacket and waterproof boots. Read our best time to visit Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda page for more.

A Day Out in Kigali

Kigali is clean, green and safe. The Kigali Genocide Memorial tells the story of 1994 with care and dignity. Plan about 2 hours there and expect a sober visit.

The city also has craft markets, coffee shops and viewpoints. Many guests keep a half day free before their flight. A 4 day Rwanda gorilla trek starts and ends in the city, so you get a good feel for Rwanda in a short time.

Where You Stay Near the Park

Musanze is the base town for Volcanoes National Park. Lodges sit between the town and the park gate. Views of the volcanoes are common and evenings are cool.

Choose the tier that suits your budget. All rooms are booked on full board during the trek days.

  • Budget: private rooms with hot water, a restaurant and a garden
  • Mid range: spacious rooms with fireplaces and views of the volcanoes
  • Luxury: cottages with log fires, a spa and excellent food

What to Pack for the Volcanoes

Weather changes fast at altitude. Pack waterproof boots, long trousers, long sleeves, a rain jacket, a warm fleece and a hat. Gardening gloves help on slippery vegetation.

Our safari packing checklist helps with basics. Carry water, snacks and a small daypack. Your lodge provides a packed lunch on trek days. A dry bag protects your camera on a 4 day Rwanda gorilla trek.

A Sample Budget for a Couple

A couple in the mid range tier pays about USD 5,980 for the whole trip. Add USD 80 for porters, USD 150 for tips and USD 150 for drinks and souvenirs.

Your flights to Kigali come on top. We show the permit and each extra as its own line. That makes it easy to compare a 4 day Rwanda gorilla trek with other offers.

Rwanda or Uganda for Your First Trek?

Rwanda is easier to reach and has a higher permit price. Uganda is cheaper and offers more parks and chimps. Both give a great one hour with the gorillas.

Our Uganda gorilla trekking cost page lists the Uganda options. If you want both, see our combined plan on request.

Getting to Kigali from Nairobi

Flights from Nairobi to Kigali take about 1 hour 30 minutes, with several flights each day. We meet you at the airport. Kenyan passport holders can usually enter Rwanda visa free and we confirm the current rule at booking.

Visitors from other countries can use the East Africa Tourist Visa of about USD 100, or a Rwanda e visa. Read our Uganda vs Rwanda gorilla trekking guide to compare countries.

Health, Safety and Insurance

Rwanda is clean and safe. Take malaria tablets for lowland areas and carry a yellow fever certificate. Our vaccinations and malaria guide lists the basics.

Insurance with medical evacuation is wise. See our travel insurance guide. To book your 4 day Rwanda gorilla trek, use the book and pay page.

How to book your 4 day Rwanda gorilla trek

Booking your 4 day Rwanda gorilla trek with us takes about five minutes of your time. The rest is our job. Here is exactly what happens, step by step, so there are no surprises along the way.

  1. Send your dates. Message us on WhatsApp with your travel dates, how many people are coming and the ages of any children. Tell us if you have a budget in mind. We plan with it, not around it.
  2. Get a written quote. We reply with a clear price per person, what it includes and what it does not. No hidden park fees and no vague extras. If a cheaper camp or a shorter route makes more sense, we say so.
  3. Tweak it until it fits. Change a camp, add a night or swap a park. Ask as many questions as you like. Changes cost nothing until you confirm.
  4. Confirm with a deposit. A deposit holds your vehicle, guide and rooms. You get a written confirmation with every detail and the date the balance is due.
  5. Travel day. Your driver guide meets you at your hotel or the airport with a name board. You have their number and ours for the whole trip.

What every trip with us includes

Every 4 day Rwanda gorilla trek plan we put together comes with the basics done properly. You ride in a safari vehicle with a pop up roof, with a professional driver guide who knows the parks. Water is in the cooler box and park fees are sorted in advance so you do not stand in a queue at the gate.

We also stay reachable. If something changes on the road, a flat tyre, a closed route or a sudden storm, we sort it and keep you posted on WhatsApp.

Paying safely

We share payment details in writing only and every payment gets a receipt. The payment options and the balance date sit on your written quote, so nothing is left to memory or a phone call.

Why book with a Nairobi team

We live here. We drive these roads all year, we know which camps are honest about their photos and we know when a park is too busy to enjoy. That local knowledge is what turns a good 4 day Rwanda gorilla trek into a great one. Our Google rating sits at 5.0 from 46 reviews and we plan to keep it that way.

Ready when you are. Send us a message and we will put a plan together for you shortly.

Questions people ask

How much is a Rwanda gorilla trek?

A 4 day Rwanda gorilla trek costs from about USD 2,390 per person for six people in the budget tier. Two people pay about USD 2,590 each. Mid range starts near USD 2,990 for two. The permit is included and listed separately.

How much is a gorilla permit in Rwanda?

A Rwanda gorilla permit costs USD 1,500 per person. East African citizens pay a lower rate. We book the permit when you pay your deposit and show it as its own line in your quote.

How many days do you need for gorilla trekking in Rwanda?

Three days is the minimum, since you travel in, trek and travel out. A 4 day Rwanda gorilla trek adds the golden monkeys and a rest day. Five days lets you add Akagera or Lake Kivu.

Can I do Rwanda gorillas from Nairobi?

Yes. Fly from Nairobi to Kigali in about 1 hour 30 minutes. We meet you at the airport and drive to Musanze. Many of our guests fly out on the final evening and are home the same night.

Is golden monkey trekking worth adding?

Yes, if you have a spare day. The trek is easier than gorillas and the monkeys are fun to watch. It costs about USD 100 and takes 2 to 3 hours. Combined with a 4 day Rwanda gorilla trek, it adds variety.

Is a 4 day Rwanda gorilla trek enough time?

Yes for most people. You get one gorilla day, one golden monkey day and two travel days. If you want a buffer in case of delays, add a fifth night. Gorilla permits are fixed by date, so arriving a day early is wise when your flights are tight.

Is the Dian Fossey hike hard?

It is a long, steep walk of 6 to 8 hours. You need good fitness. The reward is the grave site and views over the volcanoes. We suggest it only if you are experienced in hiking.

Can I extend the trip?

Yes. Add Akagera for a Big Five safari or Lake Kivu for a beach rest. We price each extension in writing before you pay. See our 3 day Rwanda gorilla trekking page for a shorter option.
