Gorilla habituation experience Uganda: what you will see

What Happens During the Four Hours

During the gorilla habituation experience Uganda guests walk with the researchers to find the family. Once found, you stay and watch what the gorillas do. They may feed on leaves, rest in the shade or play. Infants climb and tumble.

Researchers explain behaviour and family structure. You may see the silverback, mothers and young males. You must keep your distance of 7 metres and avoid sudden moves. The longer time helps you notice small details, such as grooming and scent calls.

Rushaga: Where the Experience Happens

The gorilla habituation experience Uganda takes place in Rushaga, in the south of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. It has the largest number of habituated gorilla groups of any sector. The hills are steep and the forest is thick.

Lodges in Rushaga sit on ridges with views over the valleys. The sector is about 5 hours by road from Kigali and about 8 to 9 hours from Kampala. That is why we start in Kigali.

Photography on a Gorilla Habituation Experience Uganda Trip

Four hours gives you time to learn the light. Gorillas live in dim forest, so use a fast lens and a high ISO. Switch off flash, since it is banned. A lens of 70 to 200 mm works for most shots.

Bring spare batteries and cards, a lens cloth and a rain cover. Your ranger tells you when to move closer. Respect the 7 metre rule even for photos. A gorilla habituation experience Uganda visit rewards patience more than gear.

Gorilla Welfare and Rules

Gorillas share about 98 percent of our DNA, so they catch our colds. That is why anyone with a cough or flu is refused. You wear a mask in some groups and you must never leave rubbish in the forest.

Habituation is also a conservation tool. Permit income funds rangers, anti poaching and local communities. Mountain gorillas now number over 1,000 and the gorilla habituation experience Uganda offers helps keep that number growing.

  • Keep a distance of 7 metres where possible
  • Do not eat or drink near the gorillas
  • Do not use flash or touch the animals
  • Stay in a tight group and follow your ranger

Packing for the Forest

Mornings in Rushaga are cool and wet. Pack waterproof boots, long trousers and long sleeves. Add gardening gloves, a rain jacket, a hat and a warm fleece. A dry bag protects your camera.

Our safari packing checklist helps with the rest. Carry snacks and at least 2 litres of water. Lodges provide packed lunches on trek days.

A Sample Budget for a Couple

A couple in the mid range tier pays about USD 5,180 for the whole trip. Add USD 80 for porters, USD 100 for tips and USD 100 for drinks and souvenirs.

Your flights to Kigali come on top. We list each permit and fee as its own line, so you can see where the money goes. The gorilla habituation experience Uganda is a premium trip and clear pricing matters.

Combine with Rwanda or Kenya

You can pair the habituation visit with a Rwanda trek or with a Kenya safari. For example, you could do Rwanda gorillas first and Uganda habituation after. See our 3 day Rwanda gorilla trekking page.

For a bigger plan, see our 12 day Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda safari. We can quote a custom trip with two permits.

Fitness and Safety

On a gorilla habituation experience Uganda trip, treks can be steep and muddy and they can last for several hours. You need average fitness and good boots. A porter can carry your bag for about USD 20 and help you on slopes.

The minimum age is 15. Anyone with a cold or flu will be refused, to protect the gorillas. Keep your voice low and follow the ranger, because the animals know the research team and watch how you behave. Our vaccinations and malaria guide lists health steps. See also our travel insurance guide.

Best Time for a Gorilla Habituation Experience Uganda

Jun to Sep and Dec to Feb are the driest months. The trails are easier and the skies clearer. Mar to May and Oct to Nov are wet, but trackers still find the gorillas.

Rain is possible at any time in the forest. Pack a rain jacket and waterproof boots. Read our best time to visit Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda page for more.

Getting There from Nairobi
