We run every Samburu safari with a private driver guide and a pop up roof 4×4. Prices below are a guide price per person sharing, confirmed in writing on WhatsApp before you pay a deposit.

Highlights

  • Home of the Special Five: Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, beisa oryx and Somali ostrich
  • The Ewaso Nyiro River keeps wildlife close even in the dry months
  • Fewer vehicles per sighting than the Maasai Mara
  • Strong Samburu cultural visits available as an add on
  • Easy to combine with Ol Pejeta or Lake Nakuru on a longer route
  • Private driver guide and pop up roof 4×4 throughout

Day by day plan

  1. Day 1

    Nairobi to Samburu

An early pickup from your Nairobi hotel or the airport, driving north past Mount Kenya’s lower slopes and through Nanyuki and Isiolo. The drive takes about 5 to 6 hours with a stop for lunch. You reach camp by mid afternoon and head straight out for an evening game drive along the river before dinner.

  2. Day 2

    Full day Samburu game drives

Two game drives, morning and afternoon, cover the riverine forest and the drier plains beyond it. Your guide targets the Special Five alongside elephant, lion and leopard, which are all present in good numbers. A visit to a local Samburu village can be arranged on request for the afternoon break. Overnight in Samburu.

  3. Day 3

    Samburu to Nairobi

A final early morning game drive, then breakfast and the drive back to Nairobi, arriving by mid afternoon in time for an evening flight or a night in the city. This closes out a short but rewarding Samburu safari.

What makes a Samburu safari different from the Mara

A Samburu safari trades the Mara’s open grassland for a drier, more rugged landscape built around one river. That river is the reason wildlife stays visible even in months when other parks look empty, since everything eventually comes down to drink.

The species list changes too. Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, beisa oryx and Somali ostrich, together known as the Special Five, are found here and barely anywhere else in Kenya. Lion, leopard and elephant are all present as well, so you are not trading predators for the change of scenery.

How much does a 3 day Samburu safari cost

A 3 day Samburu safari starts from about USD 650 per person sharing in a group of 6 at budget camps in low season. Two people travelling alone pay closer to USD 850, since the vehicle and driver cost is split fewer ways.

The county fee, camp cost and driver share make up most of the price. Compare this against our 5 day Samburu, Ol Pejeta and Lake Nakuru safari if you want to combine Samburu with rhino tracking on the same trip.

How far is Samburu from Nairobi

About 325 kilometres, roughly 5 to 6 hours by road, running north through Nanyuki and Isiolo with Mount Kenya visible for much of the way. It is a long single day drive, which is why almost every Samburu safari runs at least 3 days.

Samburu safari: what you will see

The Special Five explained

Grevy’s zebra is the largest and most endangered of Africa’s three zebra species, easily told apart by its narrower stripes and big rounded ears. Reticulated giraffe has a clean, tile like coat pattern, sharper than the blotchy Maasai giraffe further south.

Gerenuk stand on their hind legs to browse from tall shrubs, a strange and photogenic habit. Beisa oryx carry long straight horns and striking black and white facial markings. Somali ostrich, with blue grey rather than pink legs, rounds out the list. A Samburu safari is really the only reliable way to see all five together, since none of them range reliably as far south as the Mara or Amboseli.

Best season for a Samburu safari

Samburu is good year round because the river keeps game close by, but the dry months, June to October and January to March, concentrate wildlife most tightly along the water and make sightings easier.

The rains, April, May and November, green up the landscape and thin the crowds, though some tracks can get muddy. Check our month by month guide for a full season breakdown before you pick dates for your Samburu safari.

Combining Samburu with Ol Pejeta or Nakuru

Ol Pejeta Conservancy, about 2 to 3 hours from Samburu, adds rhino tracking and a chimpanzee sanctuary to the trip, and pairs naturally on the drive back toward Nairobi. Our Ol Pejeta day trip page covers a shorter add on version.

Lake Nakuru works as a third stop for travellers who want flamingos and a fenced rhino sanctuary on the same loop, covered on our Lake Nakuru day trip page in its short form. Ask us on WhatsApp and we will build a combined itinerary and price around your dates.

Private safari or group joining

Most guests take this as a private Samburu safari for full control of the pace and photo stops. A shared group joining option can be arranged on request, though Samburu departures are less frequent than Mara ones since demand is lower on this route.

Ask us for the next available group joining date if a private safari is outside your budget. Read our note on Kenya group joining safaris for how shared departures work more generally across our whole itinerary list.

Buffalo Springs and Shaba, Samburu’s neighbouring reserves

Samburu National Reserve sits on the north bank of the Ewaso Nyiro River, with Buffalo Springs directly across the water on the south bank and Shaba a little further east. A single entry ticket often covers movement between Samburu and Buffalo Springs, though rules can change, so we confirm this at booking.

Most camps sit close enough to the river crossing that a single Samburu safari naturally covers both reserves without extra driving. Shaba is quieter still and suits guests who have already spent a day or two in the main reserve and want fewer other vehicles around, or who are extending a longer northern Kenya circuit.

Getting to Samburu by road or by air

Most of our Samburu safari trips run by road, since the drive itself passes Mount Kenya and rural central Kenya towns that are worth seeing on their own. Scheduled flights from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport also serve Samburu’s airstrips, cutting the journey to under an hour.

  • Road: about 5 to 6 hours, included in every package price shown here
  • Air: about 50 minutes, priced separately, useful if time is tight
  • A fly in, drive out combination is possible if you want to see both
  • Road transfers let you stop for photos and tea along the way, which flights obviously skip

Camps and lodges on a Samburu safari

Camps here range from simple tented setups with river views to small luxury properties with plunge pools. Because Samburu draws fewer visitors than the Mara, even mid range camps often feel more private, with lower bed counts and quieter common areas.

We match you to a camp based on budget and style rather than a fixed list, since availability shifts through the year. See our lodge versus tented camp guide for how the tiers differ, and tell us on WhatsApp if you want a family room, a honeymoon setting or a working conservation camp with hands on rhino or elephant projects nearby.

Who a Samburu safari suits

This trip suits repeat visitors to Kenya who already saw the Mara and want new species and a different landscape. It also suits photographers, since lower vehicle numbers and good light along the river make for calmer, more considered shots.

It is a longer drive than a Mara trip for a similar length stay, so it suits travellers with a bit more time or a genuine interest in the Special Five over a shorter, busier first safari. If this is your first Kenya trip, our step by step planning guide helps you decide where Samburu fits against the Mara and Amboseli.

What to pack and health notes

Samburu is hotter and drier than the Mara, so pack lighter clothing, a wide brimmed hat and more sunscreen than you think you need. Dust is a real factor here, so a buff or light scarf helps on open vehicle game drives, particularly in the driest months when tracks turn to fine red powder.

Malaria prevention is recommended for this route; see our vaccinations and malaria guide before you travel. A Kenya ETA is required for most visitors before arrival. Mobile signal is patchy at most camps, so let people know in advance that you may be quiet for a couple of days.

How to book your Samburu safari

Booking your Samburu safari with us takes about five minutes of your time. The rest is our job. Here is exactly what happens, step by step, so there are no surprises along the way.

  1. Send your dates. Message us on WhatsApp with your travel dates, how many people are coming and the ages of any children. Tell us if you have a budget in mind. We plan with it, not around it.
  2. Get a written quote. We reply with a clear price per person, what it includes and what it does not. No hidden park fees and no vague extras. If a cheaper camp or a shorter route makes more sense, we say so.
  3. Tweak it until it fits. Change a camp, add a night or swap a park. Ask as many questions as you like. Changes cost nothing until you confirm.
  4. Confirm with a deposit. A deposit holds your vehicle, guide and rooms. You get a written confirmation with every detail and the date the balance is due.
  5. Travel day. Your driver guide meets you at your hotel or the airport with a name board. You have their number and ours for the whole trip.

What every trip with us includes

Every Samburu safari plan we put together comes with the basics done properly. You ride in a safari vehicle with a pop up roof, with a professional driver guide who knows the parks. Water is in the cooler box, and park fees are sorted in advance so you do not stand in a queue at the gate.

We also stay reachable. If something changes on the road, a flat tyre, a closed route or a sudden storm, we sort it and keep you posted on WhatsApp.

Paying safely

We share payment details in writing only, and every payment gets a receipt. The payment options and the balance date sit on your written quote, so nothing is left to memory or a phone call.

Why book with a Nairobi team

We live here. We drive these roads all year, we know which camps are honest about their photos, and we know when a park is too busy to enjoy. That local knowledge is what turns a good Samburu safari into a great one. Our Google rating sits at 5.0 from 46 reviews, and we plan to keep it that way.

Ready when you are. Send us a message and we will put a plan together for you shortly.

Questions people ask

What are Samburu’s Special Five?

Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, beisa oryx and Somali ostrich. All five are adapted to this drier, northern landscape and are hard to see reliably anywhere else in Kenya, which is the main reason travellers add a Samburu safari to a longer trip.

How far is Samburu from Nairobi?

About 325 kilometres, roughly 5 to 6 hours by road through Nanyuki and Isiolo. It is a full day of driving, so most Samburu safari itineraries run at least 3 days to make the trip worthwhile.

Is Samburu good in the dry season?

Yes, arguably the best time to go. June to October and January to March concentrate wildlife along the Ewaso Nyiro River, since it is one of the few reliable water sources in the drier surrounding country. Sightings tend to be easier in these months.

How much is a 3 day Samburu safari?

From about USD 650 per person sharing in a group of 6 at budget camps in low season, up to around USD 1,550 for luxury at 2 people sharing. The price includes park fees, a private driver guide, full board accommodation and all game drives.

Can I combine Samburu with Ol Pejeta?

Yes, easily. Ol Pejeta is about 2 to 3 hours from Samburu and adds rhino tracking and a chimpanzee sanctuary. Many guests combine both on a single Samburu safari route, either as a short add on or as part of a longer 5 day itinerary.

Can I visit Samburu on a group joining safari?

A shared group joining option exists on request, though departures run less often than for the Maasai Mara since fewer travellers book this route. Ask us on WhatsApp for the next available date, or take Samburu as a private safari for full control of your schedule and stops along the way.
