Day by day plan
- Day 1
Nairobi to Ol Pejeta
On the first day of your 3 day Ol Pejeta safari you leave Nairobi at about 7 am and drive north through Thika, Nyeri and Naro Moru. The road is paved and the drive takes about 4 hours. You may see Mount Kenya on a clear morning. You reach the conservancy for lunch and check in. At about 3:30 pm you head out on your first game drive. Your guide looks for lions, elephants, buffalo and plains game across the open grass.
- Day 2
Full day on the conservancy
Day two of your 3 day Ol Pejeta safari begins with a sunrise game drive, when predators are still active. After breakfast you visit the rhino sanctuary where the northern white rhinos live under 24 hour guard. In the afternoon you visit the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, a short walk with a ranger guide. You can add a night drive after supper to look for leopards, hyenas, bush babies and genets. Night drives are charged extra.
- Day 3
Morning drive and back to Nairobi
You wake early for a final game drive, then return for breakfast and checkout. After a short visit to the Morani Information Centre or the anti poaching dog unit, you leave for Nairobi. The drive passes Nanyuki, where you stop at the equator sign for photos and a coffee. You reach Nairobi in the mid afternoon, in time for most evening flights.

Why Choose a 3 day Ol Pejeta safari
A 3 day Ol Pejeta safari works because the conservancy is compact and wildlife dense. You see rhinos on most drives and the distances between sightings are short. Two nights lets you try night drives and a bush walk that you cannot do in many national parks. With only one night the first afternoon goes quickly, so a second night adds real value.
If you only have a weekend, our 2 day Ol Pejeta safari covers the main sights. A 3 day Ol Pejeta safari adds a full day and a slower pace.
How Much Is a 3 day Ol Pejeta safari?
Our guide prices start at USD 890 per person for six people sharing a budget tier in low season. Two people on a mid range plan pay about USD 1,280 each. Two people on a luxury plan pay about USD 1,510.
On a 3 day Ol Pejeta safari the conservancy fee for non residents is about USD 110 per person per day and we include it for all three days. The price also covers your vehicle, guide and two nights on full board.
Our Kenya national park entry fees guide compares Ol Pejeta with other parks. For broader rates see Kenya safari packages and prices.
Rhinos and the Northern White Rhino Story
Ol Pejeta is home to the last two northern white rhinos in the world, Najin and Fatu. Both are female. Armed rangers guard them around the clock and visitors see them at a set viewing time with a guide.
The conservancy also protects more than 150 black rhinos, which makes it a stronghold for the species. Your guide explains the breeding programme and the challenge of conservation as you drive. Many travellers find this part of a 3 day Ol Pejeta safari the most moving.

Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary
Chimps cannot live in the wild in Kenya, so Ol Pejeta runs a sanctuary for rescued animals. The chimps live on islands in a large fenced area. You see them from viewing platforms with a ranger who tells their stories.
The visit takes about 90 minutes and is usually scheduled for the afternoon. Wear closed shoes and keep your voice low. Touching the fence and feeding the chimps are not allowed.
Night Drives, Bush Walks and Other Add Ons
Ol Pejeta lets guests go out at night with a ranger. You search for leopards, white tailed mongoose and nocturnal birds with a spotlight. A night drive adds about USD 50 to 70 per person, confirm at booking.
Guided bush walks, horse rides and camel rides are also on offer. They suit travellers who want to feel the open grass rather than watch it through a window. Ask us to add any of these to your 3 day Ol Pejeta safari.
What a Day Looks Like on Ol Pejeta
Days start early. You wake at about 5:45 am, drink tea or coffee and leave in the cool light. Lions often sit on small rises and cheetahs hunt in the first hours. By 9 am the animals settle into shade.
You return for breakfast, rest through the hot middle of the day and head out again at about 3:30 pm. The afternoon drive runs until sunset. Dinner is served at camp and a night drive follows if you booked one.
Because the conservancy is small, you rarely spend more than ten minutes driving between sightings. That keeps children and tired adults engaged.
Ol Pejeta is excellent for close rhino portraits. Rhinos stand in open grass with Mount Kenya behind them on clear mornings. Bring a 100 to 400 mm lens and a bean bag for the window.
Your guide positions the vehicle for the best light and keeps a safe distance from the animals. Chimps are hard to photograph through fencing, so use a fast lens and a wide aperture. Night drives need a low light lens and steady hands.
Ol Pejeta Compared With Samburu and the Mara
The Mara has bigger herds and Samburu has rare northern species. Ol Pejeta has easy access, strong rhino viewing and flexible activities such as night drives. It is also much closer to Nairobi.
If rhinos and a short drive matter most, choose Ol Pejeta. If you want migration scenes, look at our 3 day Masai Mara safari from Nairobi. If you want dry country animals, try our 3 day Samburu safari.
Many guests extend from Ol Pejeta to Samburu or the Aberdares. Our 3 day Aberdare and Ol Pejeta safari mixes the conservancy with a forest night. For a longer route see the 5 day Samburu, Ol Pejeta and Lake Nakuru safari.
Where You Stay
Most tiers use camps or lodges inside or beside the conservancy, so you save time on game days. Budget cottages and tented camps offer simple comfort. Mid range tented camps add private bathrooms. Luxury lodges offer pools and views over the plains.
See our guide to lodge versus tented camp versus camping if you want to know what each style feels like.
Book early for school holidays and the Jul to Oct season, because the best cottages and tented camps near the rhino sanctuary are small and fill first. Tell us if you need a family room, a ground floor room or a quiet corner. We ask the camp before we confirm your quote in writing.
- Budget: cottages or small tents with hot water and full meals
- Mid range: tented camp with private bathrooms and a lounge
- Luxury: lodge or private bush camp with a pool and fireplace
Best Time for a 3 day Ol Pejeta safari
Ol Pejeta works all year. Jan to Mar and Jun to Oct are dry and the animals gather near water. Nov and Dec bring green grass, newborn animals and short rains. Apr and May are wet, with the lowest rates and the fewest visitors.
The conservancy sits at about 1,800 m, so mornings and nights are cool even at the equator. See the Kenya safari in December guide for a month by month weather view.
